John Wooden

Recommended Posts

Possibly John Wooden? Don't know if he passes the fame test in the UK, but you'd be hard pressed to find a amateur (collegiate) basketball fan who hasn't heard of the guy. He only won 10 NCAA titles in twelve years with the SAME TEAM (UCLA), a feat which will probably never be duplicated. He's 95 now, but I don't know of an particular health problems. Interesting pick, I think.

On the latest trips and slips ...

Robert C. Byrd, the 90 year old senator who is in fact the longest-serving senator in U.S. history is currently hospitalized after having a negative reaction to antibiotics. He was in the hospital on the result of a tumble last week, but recovered. This time he is back with a urinary track infection.

John Wooden, the legendary 97 year old American basketball ball coach is currently hospitalized after taking a slip in his Encino condo. He broke his wrist and collar bone, and has remained in the hospital since February 29th.

Doctors seem optimistic, but I'm not falling for it.

American basketball coach John Wooden, 98, mentioned many times before on DL, is recovering from a bout of pneumonia.

Ed McMahon's chances of surviving more than a few days don't look too good, the several teams who've picked him on the DDP may be hoping he surives until expiring on 6th March - his birthday.

Someone has just twittered that American basketball coach John Wooden has died. No official confirmation yet, but lots of stories in the press about how gravely ill he is.

http://espn.go.com/ -- to see how well known he is. He's also a trending topic on Google (Then again, so is Krispy Kreme).

Quote from a Pat Forde (ESPN) writer: "You could take him to the big city and make him a globally worshipped coaching icon, but you could never take the small-town Indiana out of John Wooden..."

Globally worshipped? It should come as no surprise that we Americans could take someone famous here and claim them as a "globally worshipped icon" when they don't even get an obit in other industrialised countries.

I saw some blogger talking about whatever the fuck happened with that referee in that baseball game the other day with the claim "This is the #1 story in sports sections in every country around the world right now".
