China’s health authorities are on high alert after a suspected case of the infectious bubonic plague was reported Sunday from Inner Mongolia less than eight months after two cases of the same type of plague were reported from the same northern province.

On Wednesday, the Maine Center for Disease Control and Prevention (Maine CDC) announced that a resident of Waldo County, Maine, passed away after contracting Powassan virus, a rare but sometimes deadly tick-borne illness. “The adult developed neurologic symptoms and died while in the hospital,” the agency said in a statement. “This person likely became infected in Maine.

A New Mexico man contracted and died of plague in the state’s first recorded fatality from the disease since 2020, its public health agency announced Friday.

The Lincoln County man, whose name was not released, succumbed to the illness after being hospitalized, the New Mexico Department of Health said in a statement. His was the first reported case of the rodent-origin bacterial disease since 2021.

As a note of comparison, the very last two recorded bubonic plague cases in the UK were in Suffolk in 1918, and the last cases of infected rats were in 1914.

In France, the last cases recorded were in Corsica in 1945.
