maryportfuncity 10,646 Posted December 31, 2012 Looks like a clear lead from the permissive party. So I'll add the late-comers to the list. Aye, alreet: (toast, death impends, msc, deadsox, Capt Chorizo) = 5 Rules is rules: Rotten Ali = 1 All of which is probably good news since the two late-comers are the defending champion and the 2011 winner. To save me PM'ing a few people who keep asking: I won't put up the masterlist until tomorrow so all those picks you want to keep safe are indeed safe with me and I can see your points, a few picks look really inspired and hadn't occured to me, or been discussed hereabouts to any significant degree.. No more entries, no last-minute negotiations, battle commences at the stroke of midnight. Let's make it a Deathrace to remember!

maryportfuncity 10,646 Posted January 1, 2013 Reet gang, we're up and on our way, Complete masterlist now live (all jealously guarded picks revealed for everyone to see), and my BIG POST above THROBBING WITH THE CAREFULLY CONSIDERED CREAM that makes up the masterlist. The serious point of which is that it'll act as a reality check if I've made a mistake compiling the masterlist. I've already corrected the mistake in which I added Steve Lewis as a pick for Time, when it should have been Jerry Lewis. Let's get dying, let's get scoring, let's do this Deathrace, BABY!! Toast 16,136 Posted January 1, 2013 Correction to my team above, I swapped Ebert in for Montalcini. Masterlist seems OK though.

Spade_Cooley 9,519 Posted January 1, 2013 Another one I thought might be a unique pick, Kate Granger, gone...clinging on to the others I cut Grainger in the final draft... she's still wandering around wards blithely helping others, plus she's not guaranteed an obit. The fact she was potentially unique and terminally ill was enough to sway me, but she's definitely not a banker...fairly confident on the obit-front because of her articles for the Guardian but could be proved wrong... maryportfuncity 10,646 Posted January 1, 2013 Another one I thought might be a unique pick, Kate Granger, gone...clinging on to the others I cut Grainger in the final draft... she's still wandering around wards blithely helping others, plus she's not guaranteed an obit. The fact she was potentially unique and terminally ill was enough to sway me, but she's definitely not a banker...fairly confident on the obit-front because of her articles for the Guardian but could be proved wrong... Obit wise, she's surely gonna get coverage of some kind. I had her marked down for serious consideration from October when the Daily Mail did a big piece on her spurning treatment to ensure a better quality of the life that remained. My marginal bit of press coverage is Christine Ray (haven't even seen a picture of her and it was hard enough to establish that she had the same surname as her (divorced) daughter. But they're likely to continue to get some press coverage because they're the reason Jimmy Saville's estate was frozen in the first place.

Saw the edited team but that edit was well over three hours after I posted the above, and also after I'd PM'd others to point out we were closed for business. Apologies and all that, but I'd say the final line above is fairly clear.
maryportfuncity 10,646 Posted January 6, 2013 Am I missing summat or is the entire masterlist still breathing almost one week into the competition? I can only apologise for the lack of action in what looks to be a gripping contest (eventually). Seriously gang, if someone whose name I barely recognise on that list has carked and got a local paper obit, post the link, let's get started!
msc 18,439 Posted January 6, 2013 Its a case of many low hangers being too shy to be the one who goes first, surely. Once one falls, many others will fall in their wake. (Or at their wake)
Spade_Cooley 9,519 Posted January 6, 2013 Neither Lisa Lynch nor her husband have tweeted since Christmas Eve, so I get the feeling DDT might be enjoying a points rush very very soon.
maryportfuncity 10,646 Posted January 6, 2013 Amazingly, my avatar - carked today - will accrue no Deathrace points. He's in sixth position on my HPDP team, summat of a mixed blessing, really. Etta James did me limited favours last year, being the first HPDP member to go and lying in ninth place on my line-up.

maryportfuncity 10,646 Posted January 9, 2013 Key rules below: 10 – ‘Obit’ in the context of the Deathrace means any report from a reliable news source in English. In this context the following are admissable: ‘Newspaper obits, national newspaper reports, local newspaper reports, coverage in trade journals or similar specialist publications. In all cases evidence online from these sources is sufficient to count for an ‘obit’ for scoring purposes. In the event of a debate about a ‘reliable news source’ MPFC’s decision is final. But he is very reasonable and quite likely to award points to the lowest hanging fruit. 11a – In honour of everyone’s favourite Maddie-implicated paedo-scum the Deathrace operates a policy of awarding 365 points to any candidate widely believed to be alive on 1 January and subsequently discovered to have been deceased when the pool opened. To qualify for such a bonus said candidate must be reported dead in the year of the competition. In the event that an obit counting news report adhering to Deathrace qualification for points is subsequently discovered to have been published before the commencement of the Deathrace all points for the candidate are voided. And this is clearly a test-case. The way I see it the blog DOESN'T count as a news source and is probably even too low for Deathrace points awarding, but Wiki is reporting him dead and I'll go with that (and probs amend the rules accordingly for 2014). I checked the edit history of the Wiki page and it wasn't updated to record him dead until 7 January. Deffo the first case of the Raymond Hewlett injunction being used, and therefore a fitting tribute to everyone's favourite Maddie-implicated paedo scum. The race is on! maryportfuncity 10,646 Posted January 13, 2013 Well, put us right if I've got owt wrong but... At the end of the second week the score is Spade = 365 Rest of us = nowt And unless we get a carking joker by close of business tomorrow we'll have no 700 pointers this year. It's gonna really kick off soon, surely!
maryportfuncity 10,646 Posted January 20, 2013 Let me know if I've missed owt but... TWO significant deaths so far, a few of the usual suspects making the early running and a contest yet to ignite. A joker going down in the next seven days might liven it up a little, eh?
