arghton 6,502 Posted January 4 Ilia II, Catholicos-Patriarch of All Georgia, is 91 today. This image above is from his New Year's Speech. Ilia II was born into an influential family in Vladikavkaz, Russian SFSR, Soviet Union, now part of North Ossetia-Alania, Russia. He was baptized on the 7th of January (Georgia's Christmas Day) as Irakli Ghudushauri-Shiolashvili after Heraclius II aka. Erekle II who was King of Kakheti in the 18th century. At the age of three he received a blessing from Callistratus who was at the time Georgia's Catholicos-Patriarch. Ilia II graduated Vladikavkaz Secondary School No. 22 in 1952 and joined the Moscow Theological Seminary and later the Moscow Theological Academy. In 1957, at the age of 24 he took vows and became a monk, days later ordained a hierodeacon and in two years a priest. He rose quickly, already a metropolitan bishop at 36, finally becoming the Catholicos-Patriarch at 44 after the death of the controversial and unpopular David V (1903-1977). During his time as the Catholicos-Patriarch the Georgian Orthodox Church has greatly expanded, from 15 dioceses to around 47. He has met two Popes, both in his home country, John Paul II in 1999 and Francis in 2016.
