Officially, they aren't paid at all. All voluntary, graceful amateur game (that's incredibly violent) and all that Reality is they get expenses, grants and sponsors delivered to them if they're top level.

All hurlers are nominally amateur as the GAA bans professionals; there are a few who live entirely off sponsorship and others with very very spurious jobs with sponsors.

A major contemporary died today, who I thought was dead for maybe 20 years and also wouldn't have got a QO for here; but really one of the last light entertainment presenters from Gay's era left and may hit him a bit. https://www.irishtimes.com/news/ireland/irish-news/bunny-carr-former-rté-presenter-dies-aged-91-1.3635577

Still in the wheelchair, two years on from the accident. Still drinking. http://www.bbc.com/news/world-europe-42701430 Wouldn't give him more than a few years.

He's Scottish. And a former footballer / 80s TV presenter.

Wouldn't think a UK obit is 100% nailed on, should it hit a heavy news period. Was the C4 showings of an edited Late Late and his time on Granada 50 years ago enough?
