The Daredevil

Bruce Dern

Recommended Posts

I know you're all wanting to know why. Don't know much about his current condition (hospitalised with a fractured hip several years ago), although seems more frail on Cameo these days. But this 88-year-old A-lister who killed John Wayne in The Cowboys certainly deserves a thread, and is from a dying generation of great actors. We wouldn't want him to end up like Joan Plowright (dead without a thread)

Nominated for two academy awards: Coming Home (1978, Best Supporting Actor) and Nebraska (2013, Best Actor). Also sported memorable roles in Hang 'Em High, Family Plot, Black Sunday, The Driver and Marnie.

"Coming Home" is an excellent film, despite the fact that Hanoi Jane is in it.

Also his daughter was the female lead in the original Jurassic Park film.

More topically, Laura was a David Lynch regular:  Blue Velvet, Wild At Heart, Inland Empire, Twin Peaks

Apart from the roles that have already been mentioned, he was great as the slimy villain in a very underrated sports comedy/drama, Diggstown.  (The twist in the climactic final boxing match is fantastic.)

Not previously mentioned, the excellent SF film Silent Runnings, which Bruce Dern (as a slightly nuts eco-terrorist astronaut) shares screen time with some cute robots. Oh, and They Shoot Horses Don't They, which might be one of the most depressing films I've ever seen.
