I posted a similar poll earlier today and found that it had been deleted by the time I came back to my computer. Since this appears to have offended some people I will re-word it

I therefore ask; what is the deal with threads such as this one and this one.

 

Why do people take such an interest in the ammounts that other people post on this forum?

Are they acting out of concern for the overall state of the forum?

Are they jealous that they don't have time/the type of job that allows them to post several times a day?

Are they acting out on their control issues (as the Americans say)?

Is it anyone else's business apart from the poster themselves?

Are we just 569 random people in cyberspace looking for something to argue among ourselves about until the next Deathlist celeb snuffs it.

 

I list these options as

 

Concern

Jealousy

Control

No one else's bussiness

and

Boredom

 

(please note I realise it is likely to be a combination of all of these)

 

If this poll does offend anyone and they feel the need to close it down could they at least let me know why this time.

I agree, I voted. Then the poll vanished. Incidentally I wish Graham Poll would vanish.

 

I personally can't see a problem, it adds a certain liquidity to the forum. It builds the tension whilst waiting for a classic from Skinny Henry et al.

Maybe Millwall is as confused as I as to why this issue has come up. How long does it take to read the one line dross to get to the relevant stuff? All this discussion about too high a posting frequency is self defeating.

Maybe Millwall is as confused as I as to why this issue has come up. How long does it take to read the one line dross to get to the relevant stuff? All this discussion about too high a posting frequency is self defeating.

It might take about five minutes.

But on these occasions when the total time available to read, and possibly respond to, half a day's posting is limited to ten or fifteen minutes, that wasted five minutes is significant.

 

At the moment I have all day to sit and catch up with DL but in a few days from now I will be back on a tight schedule and will not have time to read the stream-of-semi-consciousness drivel that makes up the balance of, say, "650 posts in a month." (So perhaps I will have to 'get a life' after all. )

 

To compare this forum to the Royal Family forum is incomprehensible to me, but perhaps that is because I am allegedy "small minded" and a "dickhead." (I know this from reading some of the above mentioned drivel.)

Threads are spiralling into petty name-calling and abuse, even without the interjections of rabid snooker fans or crazy Maltesers. This in addition to pointless bickering about the mechanics of the Deathlist (number of moderators, over-posting etc) I'll leave this thread / poll open for a while, then swing the scythe.

Anubis, I think your comments above are absolutely spot on.

 

I just read the Dom Mintoff thread for the first time and was struck by the quality, passion and downright weirdness of many of the contributions - together with some very funny interjections.

 

I have to say that it really puts to shame the recent bickering and bitching, particularly about who's posting too much and how the site works.

 

If contributors think someone is posting a load of boring rubbish, just ignore it and start a thread on something interesting/controversial/funny instead (preferably it might even be connected with doomed celebs....). I don't really like the idea of moderators editing the site too much because the liberty to say pretty much what you like is great; however, if the recent drivel continues, a bit of judicious pruning by the powers-that-be might be a good idea...

Quality control is one aspect and if this is the case then the mods should chopping more. Chopping harder and faster also. If it's not relevant then kill it. Delete anything that isn't anything to do with the subject in hand.

 

Or... why not have a general discussion forum for this purpose? One that covers off topic discussion? A forum that doesn't need so much debate on how it's run, or who's posting shite? This way the nitty gritty threads can be editted to the moderators content keeping everything nice and rosey for those that don't want to wade through it. All nice and topic specific.

 

One thing we shouldn't lose sight of is that this is an Internet message board and is the refuge for those with nothing better to do and plenty of time on their hands. The whole place is an enjoyable way to kill the hours, how you do that is purely your business.

I find myself in agreement with A the J. There are many threads that are becoming petty forums to abuse each other which is ridiculous. On the other hand there are plenty of people who do the majority of their posting about number of posts made by others made by others which is equally pointless. I'm like -"Think of something original to say dude".

 

Also- what exactly constitutes "obbsessive posting"?. When I joined this forum I was on about 20 posts a day, mainly in threads which had been dormant for weeks on end, and that number has gradually dropped off. Does anyone actually imagine that TF will stay on his average of 21.4 (or whatever it is) for long?

 

That is why I made this poll about why people are so concerned about the ammount people are posting and not why people post so much.

 

As for "swinging the axe" is it not a little hypocritical to delete threads to which you yourself have contributed?

Also why does startinhg a poll seem to cause so much controversy?

 

Overall, I think it would be a good idea to get the site back to talking about those actually on the DL and trying to come up with as an accurate a list as possible for next year.

I am talking about the first and the second “Who’s next” poll. There was already a thread dedicated to that topic. So basically what we had was the same material being discussed in those polls that were already being discussed in the “Who’s up next to die this year?" thread. Then you create this poll about whether anyone objects to the number of times per day certain members post to the forum. There are already 3 threads that discuss the same exact thing. They are The Most Obsessive Deathlisters, 300 Posts In A Month and 573 Posts In Under A Month.

 

In your existing polls, you also allow comments to be made about the vote that was made, so it also allows rehashing and duplicates the discussion that took place in the other threads. That is what I mean by duplication.

I'm in action occasionally on Carlisle United Mad as well and even a lowly football forum on that scale finds itself overwhelmed with ranters, off-topic specialists and a few whose opinions would have the law on them were they posted on walls or in newspapers.

 

On a nuisance scale of 1-10 the worries here are low, easily avoided if you ignore guests and look for the posters whose opinions you trust.

Keep it short (number wise), keep it sweet (at least to fellow members) and try to stick to the defining themes of Deathlist as found in the unwritten rulebook.

 

1.) The death, ill-health or infirmity of celebrities.

2.) The character assassination of Art Garfunkel.

3.) The apparently super-human powers of Clive Dunn.

 

This will serve you as well in life as in Deathlist.
