Cowboy Ronnie 78 Posted September 19, 2005 Did anyone notice that no less than 4 people died whilst competing in the Great North Run yesterday. http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/england/tyne/4259174.stm "Warm weather" was blamed in part, which makes sense as temperatures soared all the way up to a staggering 64 degrees Farenheit (18 C) on Tyneside yesterday. And here's a cheery quote from some unnamed police officer: "I can confirm four male participants in the race have died, which is more than the usual one or two - but every year more people are taking part." And it's not even a full marathon - only 13 miles. I wonder, is this a record for most deaths during a road race?

Lady Die 63 Posted September 19, 2005 Is it possible to check whether a celebrity event is going to be held in the near future? And can we nominate celebrities we'd like to take part?
Harvester Of Souls 40 Posted September 19, 2005 Is it possible to check whether a celebrity event is going to be held in the near future? And can we nominate celebrities we'd like to take part? Maybe some older 'G' list celebrities? They'll do anything to get on! Has anyone seen the latest celebrity holiday rep yarn? I think Sid Little is itching to get back into the mainstream and at 62 a fun run might just be the tonic for a sneaky wager.
Cerberus 302 Posted September 19, 2005 Sounds like they were taking it way too seriously. You don't get fatalities in the London marathon, as far as I'm aware, because the vast majority of runners take it at a gentle jog. Essential when you're dressed as a rhino, and it takes 20 minutes just to get to the start line!
Cowboy Ronnie 78 Posted September 19, 2005 Is it possible to check whether a celebrity event is going to be held in the near future? well, there's "The Match", coming up on Sky, which features ex-footballers taking on celebs in a game of football. Here's a link w/some pics. http://www.lfi.co.uk/dynevent-action-nl.do...&eventid=159514 I'm not sure who Tommy Walsh is exactly, but he looks the oldest, so maybe he'd be a candidate. Or else Tuffers, whom you just know is training by cutting down to a mere couple of packs of Benson's a day.
Death Watch Beatle 41 Posted September 19, 2005 Tommy Walsh is the fat builder who used to appear on that Garden make-over programme "Ground Force" with Alan Titchmarsh and the Dimmock twins. I think he had a go at slimming on Celebrity Fat Club a while back. Don't know how he got on though. I think he makes his money from opening B&Q stores these days. VileBody 11 Posted September 19, 2005 A mate of mine suggested I do a marathon. Told him to F**k off, but he said it was for spastics and blind kids. I thought - F**k it, I might win this...

Zeppelin 1 Posted September 19, 2005 This past August. Out in Virgina a few kids and adults had died. This happend at the National Scout Jamboree, not sure if anyone has heard of it, but it was all over the news. And the posts about 4 people dying in the marathon due to heat made me remember this. -s

maryportfuncity 10,639 Posted September 19, 2005 Re the Great North Run, no mystery. A few Geordies livin' on pies and lager did it for a laugh and paid the price for their lifestyles. Marathon training - being harder and that - often puts the fainter types off a race. Quite a few unfit and unaware types underestimate the grief awaiting them in half marathons. Cowboy Ronnie 78 Posted September 19, 2005 a valid point Dr. J, I should have been more precise and inquired had there ever been more deaths at a running road race. Although while we're splitting hairs, might I point out that as a closed circuit Le Mans is not technically a road race.
