Gooseberry Crumble 5,337 Posted December 30, 2022 On this day 20 years ago in 2002, English novelist Mary Wesley died aged 90. A hugely successful and popular author , Marys novels and writing which often explored deeply emotional and sexual themes as well as gently teasing apart the idiosyncrasies of the 'british character and mindset' , have been referred to as "arsenic without the old lace" and "Jane Austen plus sex". Her novels include The Camomile lawn (1984) , which was adapted for television, Second Fiddle (1988), A Dubious legacy (1992) , Not that sort of girl (1987), The Sixth Seal(originally published 1969, republished 1991) and Haphazard house(1983). Marys writing career was prolific and succesful but she never really hit her stride and had a breakthrough success as an author until she was 70- hence some novels being republished to much greater prominence and acclaim years later.

Drewsky1211 4,721 Posted December 31, 2022 Betty White died on this day a year ago, aged 99. White was already well-known before The Mary Tyler Moore Show and The Golden Girls; she had been on TV since the near beginning. In 1953, she created and starred in Life with Elizabeth, making her the first female producer of a sitcom. In 1954, she hosted The Betty White Show- one of the regular performers on her show was Arthur Duncan, a black man- the show was cancelled when White refused to fire him after Jim Crow-state pressure, and sadly, the show was cancelled after failing to find sponsorships. White was also a staple on game shows, such as What's My Line, To Tell the Truth, and most notably Password. She married the latter's host, Allen Ludden, in 1963. Ludden died in 1981, and White's last known word was "Allen". White remains the latest DeathList hit, dying six and a half hours before the new list was supposed to come up- she was supposed to be in the #1 spot, and it is believed that Dick Van Dyke was simply shifted up a space. Denis Law was hastily selected as the replacement name (according to the thread creation time).

Drewsky1211 4,721 Posted January 2, 2023 Daryl Dragon died on this day 4 years ago, aged 76. Dragon was his surname, not a stage name. He was the son of the conductor Carmen Dragon, and he and his brothers formed a band- obviously called "The Dragons". In 1967, he began performing as a keyboardist at The Beach Boys' live sessions, with Mike Love giving him the nickname "Captain Keyboard", as he often wore a ship captain's hat on-stage. In 1972, he met Toni Tennille, and they formed the band Captain and Tennille together. The two married in 1974, and released their signature song the next year- "Love Will Keep Us Together". This song topped the Canadian, Australian, and American charts, and was Billboard's number-one song of 1975. While they declined in popularity, they still continued to perform, and made appearances on shows like Space Ghost Coast to Coast. In 2014, Tennille divorced Dragon- love did not keep them together, but the two remained friends- so much that Tennille was by Dragon's side when he died.
