time 8,606 Posted March 26, 2023 Its 41 years since the death of Belfast-born actor Sam Kydd. Called-up for service during the war, he spent 5 years in a POW camp, experience he put to use post-war when he answered an advert for a film wanting advisers with POW experience. He applied, and as well as advising, was used as a "supporting artiste", which was his first film role - albeit uncredited - "POW in Top Bunk" in 1946's Captive Heart. From then on he became an almost-ubiquitous face in British film and TV (he's said to have appeared in every series of Dixon of Dock Green, and made almost 300 film appearances) appearing with all the familiar stars of the day. He appeared as Mike Baldwin's dad Frankie in Coronation Street, and also appeared in Crossroads. His best remembered role is smuggler Orlando O'Connor in 1960s serial Crane, and its eponymous sequel. He died aged 67, from emphysema, after a lifetime of smoking.

Drewsky1211 4,748 Posted March 28, 2023 Dwight D. Eisenhower died on this day 54 years ago, aged 78. - Eisenhower's first and middle names were switched during his childhood to avoid confusion with his father, David. Dwight and his brothers were all nicknamed Ike, intended to be an abbreviation of their last name. - Eisenhower was a member of the West Point football team at the same time as fellow WWII general Omar Bradley. He had to quit after tearing his knee, but returned to the field as a junior varsity coach and cheerleader. - One of Eisenhower's hobbies was oil painting, often painting landscapes: - Both the Republican and the Democratic parties attempted to get Eisenhower to run for them in 1948 due to his victories in World War II. He ran in 1952, and it was at this time that the first campaign commercials aired on TV: - Among the major events of Eisenhower's presidency were the end of the Korean War, the construction of the Interstate Highway System, the beginning of the Space Race, the admission of Alaska and Hawaii to the union, and the U2 incident of 1960 (nothing to do with Bono's birth). - Eisenhower was the first US president to release updates on his health while in office. Eisenhower had a serious heart attack in 1955, and a stroke in 1957 led to aphasia. - Eisenhower's health worsened after leaving office in 1961, with his gallbladder being removed in 1966. He survived seven heart attacks before he died of congestive heart failure. - Eisenhower's grandson David is the namesake of Camp David, and married Richard Nixon's (who was the senior Eisenhower's VP) daughter Julie- their marriage led to the writing of "Fortunate Son".

Drewsky1211 4,748 Posted March 29, 2023 King Gustav III of Sweden died on this day 231 years ago, aged 46. - Gustav became king in 1771following the death of his father Adolf Frederick. Shortly into his reign, he initiated a coup against the Swedish parliament in order to force the country to become an absolute monarchy (after decades of parliamentary rule). - Despite his absolutist causes, Gustav was quite liberal: he abolished torture in order to get confessions from a criminal, gave religious tolerance to Catholics and Jews, and abolished several grain export tolls. - While Sweden did not participate in the American Revolution, Gustav personally sided with the Patriots: "It is such an interesting drama to see a nation create itself[...] This perhaps is America's century[...] I cannot help but admire their courage and enthusiastically appreciate their daring". - In 1788, Gustav declared war on Russia (while they were fighting the Ottoman Empire) in an attempt to garner support. This war largely resulted in nothing changing except that the two countries agreed to a defense pact. - Gustav had planned to sponsor a colonial endeavor into southwest Australia, but had to cancel it after declaring war on Russia. - Following the war, Gustav's popularity plummeted, and he was shot while attending a ball at the Royal Opera House. He died two weeks later after the wound got infected.
