image.jpeg.cee990ff1575f3f4b64f41889c3f5965.jpeg

- Liddy joined the FBI in 1957, serving until 1962. During his time as a fed, he became the ghostwriter for J. Edgar Hoover.

- Liddy then became a prosecutor, and led a drug raid on Timothy Leary's estate in 1966.

- Liddy ran for Congress in 1968 and lost the Republican primary to Hamilton Fish IV (who ended up winning the general NY-28 election).

- Liddy first associated himself with Richard Nixon as a county director during his 1968 campaign, and became one of his undercover operatives in 1971.

- Liddy was the leader of the Watergate burglary and the last surviving burglar. He was sentenced to 20 years in prison, but Jimmy Carter commuted his sentence in April of 1977; he was released in September of that year after serving four and a half years of his sentence.

- After leaving prison, Liddy hosted a radio show that ran from 1992 to 2012. He became embroiled in further controversy when he told his listeners to kill federal law enforcement officers (this happened multiple times throughout 1994 and 1995).

- Liddy would also often appear on television, making guest appearances on shows like MacGyver and Perry Mason. He was a guest judge at WrestleMania in 1986, and appeared as a contestant on the initial series finale of Fear Factor in 2006 (at 75, he was the oldest participant in the show's history).

Its 19 years since the death of broadcaster and writer Alistair Cooke.

Video: S1 Ep1: Alistair Cooke Intro from Upstairs Downstairs: On Tr ...The great Alistair Cooke, longtime host of Masterpiece Theatre. http ...

Cooke's journalistic break came while he was on a two-year scholarship in the US; seeing that the BBC's film critic Oliver Baldwin had been sacked he despatched a telegram asking to be considered; arriving 24 hours late for his interview (travelling by Cunard ship), he suggested he write a review, and was offered the job. He combined his tenure with that of NBC's London Correspondent, recording a weekly 15-minute radio broadcast entitled London Letter.

He emigrated to the US in 1937, becoming an American citizen in 1941. He suggested to the BBC that he produce a similar 'Letter' for BBC listeners on life in the US, (which was heard worldwide via the World Service).

He was also the (Manchester) Guardian's Foreign Correspondent, reporting on Rosa Parks (who he described as "the stubborn woman who started it all") & the Montgomery Bus Boycott, and was present at Bobby Kennedy's assassination.

He became host of CBS's first Arts programme, Omnibus, and spent 22 years introducing PBS's Masterpiece Theatre, presenting the best of British drama to a US audience.

At the age of 95, on advice from his doctors, he retired from his radio programme after 58 years, and died a few weeks later, from lung cancer, which had spread to his bones.

Video: Alistair Cooke Intro from Upstairs Downstairs: Whither ...

It was revealed the year following his death that some of his bones (along with those of others) had been stolen by a medical tissue recovery firm, intending to use them in bone grafts (though Cooke's were unusable because of the cancer. Its suggested that the theives altered the cause of death and his age, to make them appear suitable).

On this day 73 years ago, 30/03/1950, French Prime Minister Léon Blum died aged 77. He was three times head of government.

In his first term in 1936-1937, he led the « Front Populaire » , a left-wing coalition that initiated important social reforms.

He has a second term in 1938. With the outbreak of WWII and France’s defeat, he was accused of treason by Pétain and Vichy’s regime, as he was believed to have weaken France and to have not do anything to prevent Germany’s rise.

After the war, from December 1946 to January 1947, he became head of the (provisional) government and de facto head of state.

Selena [Quintanilla] died on this day 28 years ago, aged 23.

image.jpeg.32fbe82f166e2c58193236a24da64bd6.jpeg

- The obstetrician who delivered Selena was none other than future libertarian politician Ron Paul.

- Selena first began singing professionally at the age of 10 as a member of Selena y Los Dinos ("Selena and the Guys"), which was formed by her father Abraham.

- Selena would begin to find mainstream success after signing with EMI Records in 1989. In 1991, her song "Buenos Amigos" was her first to top the Billboard Latin chart. Two years later, she won a Grammy for Best Mexican-American Album for her live album, and was nominated for another in 1995 for Amor Prohibido.

- Selena was killed by the manager of her fan club and boutique business, Yolanda Saldivar, after she confronted Saldivar for embezzlement. Her posthumously-released album Dreaming of You topped the Billboard Hot 200, with the titular track becoming her most-successful song (#22 on the Hot 100 chart):

- Shortly after her death, Howard Stern mocked her on his show, stating that Alvin and the Chipmunks "had more soul" than her music, and would later play some of her song with gunshot sound effects in the background. A warrant for his arrest would later be made (for disorderly conduct), leading to him making an on-air apology.

- A biopic was made of her in 1997, which helped launch Jennifer Lopez's mainstream career.

The last six attacks were on totally respectable women".

- Havers' son is the actor Nigel Havers, known for his roles as Lewis Archer on Coronation Street and Andrew Lindsay in Chariots of Fire.

- Havers suffered from heart disease throughout his final years; he debuted on DeathList 1991 and was the second hit of 1992.

Its 46 years since the Death of Cyril Radcliffe, 1st Viscount Radcliffe. He was a lawyer, made a KC in 1935, but is known for being Chairman of the committees responsible for the partition of India.

Sir Cyril Radcliffe.jpg

Despite never having been east of Paris, Radcliffe was appointed Chairman of the two committees designated with prescribing the borders delineating India and Pakistan, such that the majority of Hindus and Sikhs would remain in India and the majority of Muslims in Pakistan; five weeks were allowed to complete the job. Despite his efforts, its estimated 14million people were left the 'wrong' side of the border. This lead to massive loss of life (some figures put it as high as 2 million) and millions more injured.

On seeing the effect of partition, Radcliffe refused the salary he was due for the job.

He was knighted in 1948, and made a life peer in 1949 on being appointed a Lord of Appeal; he was created an hereditary peer in 1962, adopting the title Viscount Radcliffe of Hampton Lucy, however having no offspring, the title became extinct on his death, at the age of 77, two days after his birthday.
