Indian politician who served as the 6th prime minister of India from 1984 to 1989 Rajiv Gandhi died on this day 32 years ago, aged 46. He took office after the assassination of his mother, then-prime minister Indira Gandhi, to become the youngest Indian prime minister at the age of 40. During his tenure, Gandhi introduced several initiatives and policies aimed at modernising India and promoting economic development.

Constantine the Great died on this day 1686 years ago, aged 65.

- Constantine was born in what is modern-day Serbia. His father was Constantius Chlorus (Roman Emperor from 305 to 306) and Helena (who King Arthur author Geoffrey of Monmouth claimed was the daughter of Old King Cole- you know, the nursery rhyme character).

- Constantine was in England fighting the Picts when he became emperor after his father's death.

- A civil war erupted early into Constantine's reign, fighting against the troops of Maximian and his son Maxentius.

- In 312, Constantine had a dream where he saw victory against Maxentius if he put the symbol ☧ (a combination of the uppercase letters chi and rho) on his soldiers' shields- he interpreted this symbol as that of "Christos" (Jesus). Constantine would defeat and kill Maxentius at the Battle of the Milvian Bridge. In 313, Constantine issued the Edict of Milan, granting freedom of religion within the Roman Empire.

- Another civil war emerged against Licinius in 314- the fighting lasted until Licinius' execution in 325.

- In 330, Constantine founded the city of New Rome in Asia Minor- this would be renamed Constantinople shortly after- and then Istanbul in 1930 (the renaming after 1600 years was nobody's business but the Turks').

- Constantine introduced the solidus coin, which became the standard of the empire until its fall in 1453.

- Constantine planned a campaign against Persia in 337, but called it off after becoming sick. He was baptized on his deathbed, and died on Pentecost.

Albert Claude died 40 years ago at the age of 83, he was born in Longlier, Belgium and died in Brussels, he won the 1974 Nobel Prize in medicine for discovering cellular structures and functions. Son of Glaudice Watriquant, who died when he was only seven years. He saw in medicine a way of understanding the meaning of life and the origin of diseases (according to Claude's own words, quoted in his autobiography).

Mieczysław Horszowski died 30 years ago, the Polish pianist died at the age of 100, he died in Philadelphia (USA), he was born in Lviv, (currently Ukrainian city) Horszowski's last performance took place in Philadelphia in October 1991. He died in that city one month before his 101st birthday. He gave his final lesson a week before his death.

Henri Dutilleux died 10 years ago, was a French composer of classical music. He was born in Angers and died in Paris aged 97

On this day 1 year ago, Irish travel writer Dervla Murphy, who wrote the book "Full Tilt: Ireland to India with a Bicycle", which is about an overland cycling trip through Europe, Iran, Afghanistan, Pakistan and India, passed away at the age of 90.

Jamaican-American writer and poet Claude McKay died on this day 75 years ago, aged 57.

American poet, social activist, novelist, playwright, and columnist Langston Hughes died on this day 56 years ago, aged 66. He is one of the earliest innovators of the literary art form called Jazz poetry. Hughes is best known as a leader of the Harlem Renaissance. He famously wrote about the period that "the Negro was in vogue", which was later paraphrased as "when Harlem was in vogue".

 

 

American professional baseball pitcher Lefty Grove died on this day 48 years ago, aged 75. After having success in the minor leagues during the early 1920s, Grove became a star in Major League Baseball with the American League's Philadelphia Athletics and Boston Red Sox. He was one of the greatest pitchers in history. Grove led the American League in wins in four separate seasons, in strikeouts seven years in a row, and had the league's lowest earned run average a record nine times. He was elected to the National Baseball Hall of Fame in 1947.

Sam Snead died on this day 21 years ago, aged 89.

- Snead won his first professional golf tournament in 1936, and went on the PGA Tour for the first time in 1937, winning six events that year.

- Throughout Snead's career, he won 82 PGA Tour events, which is the current record (however, he is tied with Tiger Woods). Snead won a total of 94 gold medallions from the PGA, also the current record.

- Due to his prowess, Snead earned the nicknames "Slammin' Sammy" or simply "The Slammer". There was a much longer nickname as well- "The Long Ball Hitter from West Virginia".

- Snead was one of the inaugural inductees of the World Golf Hall of Fame in 1974 (others included Arnold Palmer, Gene Sarazen, Byron Nelson, Jack Nicklaus, and Gary Player).

- Snead died after a series of strokes that began after the 2002 Masters Tournament, just four days shy of turning 90. He made three appearances on the DeathList (1998, 2000 and 2002), and was the eighth hit (out of ten) of 2002.

Its 24 years since the death of football referee Arthur Ellis. He officiated at three FIFA World Cups (1950, '54 & '58), and also the first final of the European Cup (1954, Real Madrid 4, Reims 3).

In later life he became famous outside of  football, as the referee on the BBC gameshow Its A Knockout, and the Europe-wide Jeux Sans Frontieres.

 

He died from prostate cancer aged 84.

King David I of Scotland died on this day 870 years ago, aged 68.

- David was the eighth son of Malcolm III of Scotland, and three of his older brothers also became kings (Duncan II, Edgar, and Alexander I). He was also the brother-in-law of Henry I of England (his older sister Matilda married him in 1100).

- David became king in 1124 after the death of his brother Alexander I, but was be involved in a succession crisis with Alexander's illegitimate son Malcolm. This conflict would end with Malcolm's capture and imprisonment in 1134.

- David was one of his brother-in-law's greatest allies, and wanted to ensure Henry's daughter Matilda would take the throne. After Henry's death in 1135, however, Matilda's cousin Stephen usurped the throne. David would initiate three separate invasions into England to oust Stephen, which were unsuccessful.

- David was known for his reforms to Scottish feudalism and the organization of the church, which has since been dubbed the "Davidian Revolution".

- David's son and heir Henry died in 1152, and he himself died the following year after a 29-year reign. His grandson, Malcolm IV, would be his successor.

British statesman and politician who served as Prime Minister of the United Kingdom twice, from October 1964 to June 1970, and again from March 1974 to April 1976 Harold Wilson died on this day 28 years ago, aged 79. He was the leader of the Labour Party from 1963 to 1976, and was a Member of Parliament from 1945 to 1983. Wilson is the only Labour leader to have formed administrations following four general elections.

 

 

American jazz pianist, composer, and leader of his eponymous jazz orchestra from 1923 through the rest of his life Duke Ellington died on this day 49 years ago, aged 75.

Pope Gregory VII died on this day 938 years ago, aged 70.

- Gregory's birth name was Hildebrand, and he was mentored by Pope Gregory VI.

- After becoming an archdeacon in 1059, Gregory became a powerful figure in the church- he was instrumental in the papal election of Alexander II in 1061, who implemented a series of reforms Gregory drafted.

- Alexander II died in 1073, and Gregory became pope due to acclamation- this method is when both the clergy and populace are in agreement, chanting who should be pope. Gregory was reluctant to take the position due to the unorderly fashion of his accession and fled, and was properly elected after this.

- Gregory's reign as pope is best known for his feud with German emperor Henry IV. Henry appointed his own bishops without the church's approval to ensure they would be loyal to him. In 1076, Gregory excommunicated Henry, and Henry travelled to Canossa in Italy (where Gregory was staying) to request forgiveness, which he accepted. During the Great Saxon Revolt on 1077-1080, Gregory supported the rival king Rudolf, and excommunicated Henry again. Henry called his bishops to declare Gregory an illegitimate pope, and declared their loyalty to Antipope Clement III. Henry attacked Rome, and declared Clement pope in 1084. The Normans came to Gregory's aid and drove Clement and the Germans away, but the townspeople blamed Gregory for Rome being laid waste to, and he fled with the Normans. This conflict was known as the Investiture Controversy.

- Gregory died after a 12-year reign and was succeeded by Victor III.

- Gregory was declared a saint in 1728 by Pope Benedict XIII.

Idris I of Libya died 40 years ago, born in Giarabub and died aged 93 in Cairo, was a Libyan politician and religious leader who served as Emir of Cyrenaica and then King of Libya from 1951 to 1969. He was head of the Senussi order.

American character actor Dan Seymour died on this day 30 years ago, aged 78.

Polish military general, politician and de facto leader of the Polish People's Republic from 1981 until 1989 Wojciech Jaruzelski died on this day 9 years ago, aged 90. He was the first secretary of the Polish United Workers' Party between 1981 and 1989, making him the last leader of the Polish People's Republic. Jaruzelski served as Prime Minister from 1981 to 1985, the Chairman of the Council of State from 1985 to 1989 and briefly as President of Poland from 1989 to 1990.

 

 

American lawyer and politician who served as the United States Secretary of the Navy from 1972 to 1974 and as a five-term Republican US Senator from Virginia from 1979 to 2009 John Warner died on this day 2 years ago, aged 94. Warner was a veteran of the Second World War, and was one of the five World War II veterans serving in the Senate at the time of his retirement.

Ray Liotta died on this day a year ago, aged 67.

- Liotta was abandoned at an orphanage shortly after birth and adopted at the age of six months.

- Among Liotta's first roles was as Joey Perrini in Another World, and he played the character from 1978 to 1981. Liotta's film debut was in 1983's The Lonely Lady, a film so bad that was nominated for 11 Golden Raspberry Awards (winning six).

- Liotta's breakout role was 1986's Something Wild, and was nominated for a Golden Globe Award. He would have a string of successes over the next decade, appearing in Field of Dreams, Phoenix, No Escape, Unforgettable, and most notably as Henry Hill in Goodfellas:

- Liotta portrayed Frank Sinatra in The Rat Pack TV film, which aired just three months after Sinatra's death. Liotta would win a Screen Actors Guild Award for this.

- In 2002, Liotta provided the voice of Tommy Vercetti in Grand Theft Auto: Vice City. The only other video game credit Liotta has is as Billy Handsome in 2013's Call of Duty: Black Ops II.

- Liotta would win an Emmy for Outstanding Guest Actor in a Drama Series in 2005 after appearing in ER. This win was notably lampooned in 2007's Bee Movie, in which he voiced himself:

 

- Besides Bee Movie, Liotta did voice work in shows such as SpongeBob, Family Guy, Phineas and Ferb, and The Simpsons (voicing Moe's father in an episode of the latter).

- Liotta died from cardiopulmonary disease, and was posthumously given a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame nine months after his death.
