- Stiller's father William lived to the age of 102 (1896-1999).

- Stiller married Anne Meara in 1954- Anne had never thought about doing comedy before he suggested they become a husband-wife duo. They became famous by starring on The Ed Sullivan Show. From 1979 to 1982, the two hosted HBO Sneak Previews, showcasing the movies that would be broadcast on the channel throughout the month.

- Stiller first appeared as Frank Costanza in Seinfeld in 1993. Frank's legacy is the creation of the holiday Festivus, which some began to celebrate after this episode aired in 1997:

- Stiller planned on retiring after Seinfeld ended in 1998, but decided to continue when Kevin James asked him to join The King of Queens as Arthur Spooner.

- Stiller had a few voice acting roles late in his career (particularly Disney productions), which included Pretty Boy the bird in Teacher's Pet, Principal Stickler in Fish Hooks, and Timon's uncle Max in The Lion King 1½.

Herbert Gasser died at age 74 60 years ago, the American was awarded the Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine in 1944, for carrying out studies on nerve fibers. When the United States became involved in World War I and the armies began to use chemical warfare, Gasser was urged to contribute his knowledge of human physiology to the subject. Consequently, in the summer of 1918 he joined the Armed Forces Chemical Warfare Service in Washington.

Pope Sylvester II died on this day 1020 years ago, aged 57.

- Sylvester's birth name was Gerbertus, and he was born in France.

- In 967, Sylvester began to study mathematics and astronomy at a Catalan monastery, where he would read the works of Muslim scholars. He devised an abacus (with zero being represented by an empty space) that led to the tool being used much more in the 1000s. He also reintroduced the armillary sphere by observing said Moors.

- Sylvester would become a tutor for the future Emperor Otto II of Germany in 969.

- In 999, Sylvester was elected pope to succeed Pope Gregory V.

- There are several legends regarding Sylvester. One of these involves him inventing a robotic head capable of answering "yes" or "no" answers (a medieval AI, if you will).

- Another legend involves him befriending a succubus after he was rejected by a crush in his youth, and that she helped him achieve the papacy. Her name was Meridiana (a logical explanation for this would be that she was simply his imaginary friend).

- A third legend about him states that when he was reading the Mass in Jerusalem, the Devil attacked him (he was warned about this by either his robot or Meridiana) and gouged out his eyes for demons to play with. In order to repent, he cut off his tongue and one of his hands. Another version of this has him read it at the Holy Cross of Jerusalem church in Rome, and he became sick and died- before he did, he ordered his cardinals to dismember his body and scatter it around the city:

Johan van Oldenbarnevelt died on this day 404 years ago, aged 71.

- Van Oldenbarnevelt fought in the Eighty Years' War on the side of the Dutch, seeking independence from Habsburg Spain.

- Van Oldenbarnevelt became the Lands' Advocate of Holland in 1586- effectively the head of state, second-in-command to the king.

- He was also a diplomat to France and England, and was sent to congratulate James I (VI of Scotland) taking the throne.

- In 1602, Van Oldenbarnevelt became the primary founder of the Dutch East India Company, considered to be the first joint-stock company.

- In 1609, Van Oldenbarnevelt negotiated a truce with King Philip III of Spain. This lasted until 1621.

- Van Oldenbarnevelt would soon become an ally of the Remonstrant movement, which broke away from the Dutch Reformed Church. Maurice, the Prince of Orange, persecuted the Remonstants, and in 1618, Van Oldenbarnevelt was arrested.

- Van Oldenbarnevelt was beheaded following a sham trial:

His sons, Reinier and Willem, would later be accused of plotting to assassinate Prince Maurice in 1623. Willem and his family escaped to Spain; Reinier did not and would be executed. Reinier had a son, Pieter van Stoutenberg, who emigrated to New York in 1638- through Pieter's daughter Jannetje Ringo, I am a 12x-great-grandson of Van Oldenbarnevelt (on my mother's side).

Alois Hudal died 60 years ago, the Austrian was an Austrian Catholic bishop based in Rome, where he was known as Luigi Hudal. After World War II, Hudal helped establish the "ratlines", allowing important German Nazi leaders and other officials and European Axis politicians, including war criminals, to escape Allied trials and denazification. This organization facilitated the escape of Adolf Eichmann, Gustav Wagner, Alois Brunner, Erich Priebke, Eduard Roschmann, Franz Stangl, Walter Rauff, Klaus Barbie and Josef Mengele, among others.

American actor known for his strong, silent screen persona and understated acting style Gary Cooper died on this day 62 years ago, aged 60. Cooper began his career as a film extra and stunt rider. He appeared as the Virginian and became a movie star in 1929 with his first sound picture, The Virginian. In the early 1930s, he expanded his heroic image to include more cautious characters in adventure films and dramas such as A Farewell to Arms (1932) and The Lives of a Bengal Lancer (1935). - Conway's birth name was Thomas- he went by Tom in his youth, but was also known as Toma, the Romanian version of the name (his mother was a first-generation Romanian-American). He started calling himself "Tim" to avoid confusion with another actor named Tom Conway.

- Conway started on comedy skits broadcast on the radio.

- In 1962, Conway got a starring role as Ensign Parker on McHale's Navy, opposite Ernest Borgnine. He would be nominated for an Emmy.

- Conway would star in other comedy shows in the following decades, most notably on The Carol Burnett Show (as Mr. Tudball and the World's Oldest Man), and the direct-to-video Dorf series.

- In 1999, Conway would be reunited with Borgnine when he became the voice of Barnacle Boy on SpongeBob:

- Other voice acting roles Conway was known for were as Hermie the caterpillar in the Christian animated series Hermie and Friends, Sniffer in several of the Air Buddies movies, and Bampy Botsford in WordGirl.

- Conway suffered from normal pressure hydrocephalus for the last few years of his life, which led to him being diagnosed with dementia in 2018. Conway died eight and a half months after the diagnosis was made public.

He has appeared in over ninety films, including episodic and television films. He rose to fame on television when he portrayed US Treasury Police agent Eliot Ness on the sitcom "The Untouchables," which aired from 1959 to 1963.

American singer and actor Frank Sinatra died on this day 25 years ago, aged 82. Sinatra began his musical career in the swing era with bandleaders Harry James and Tommy Dorsey. He found success as a solo artist after signing with Columbia Records in 1943, becoming the idol of the "bobby soxers". When his film career installed in the early 1950s, Sinatra turned to Las Vegas, where he became one of its best-known residency performers and part of the famous Rat Pack. His acting career was revived by the 1953 film From Here to Eternity which earned Sinatra an Academy Award and a Golden Globe Award for Best Supporting Actor.

 

 

American actress, dancer and producer Rita Hayworth died on this day 36 years ago, aged 68. She achieved fame during the 1940s as one of the era's top stars. Hayworth is perhaps best known for her performance in the 1946 film noir Gilda, opposite Glenn Ford, in which she played the femme fatale in her first major dramatic role. She is also known for her performances in Only Angels Have Wings (1939), The Strawberry Blonde (1941), Blood and Sand (1941), The Lady from Shanghai (1947), Pal Joey (1957), and Separate Tables (1958). In 1980, Hayworth was diagnosed with early-onset Alzheimer's disease, which contributed to her death.

After graduating from LAMDA he became a familiar face on TV screens, with guest appearances in many popular programmes of the 60s and 70s, such as Dixon of Dock Green, Minder and The BIll, and a memorable role as Harris in Porridge as well as a singular memorable appearance in Blackadder II as the Bishop of Bath and Wells. He's probably most famous as the Nazi agent Toht in Raiders of the Lost Ark, a role which lead to a short Hollywood career playing villains opposite the likes of Schwarzenegger & Eastwood, and showing his versatility, two drag roles (Trenchcoat & Invitation to the Wedding).
