George Jennings, inventor of the flushing public toilet, died 139 years ago, aged 71.

George+Jennings+1810+-+82+small.JPG

He;s responsible for the ornate underground toilets that used to be almost ubiquitous, but were closed down to save money/prevent cottaging.

He's also responsible for the phrase 'spend a penny' becoming a euphemism for our toilet visits - he designed the toilets for The Great Exhibition in 1851, for which a charge of one penny was levied. At the close of the exhibition, he persuaded the authorities to leave the toilets open.
