While serving as a lieuteant in the Dutch East Indies colonial army in the Lombok Expedition he commanded a unit that committed what from a modern perspective would be called war crimes. In 1894 that wasn't an issue, so he was awarded a Military William Order, the Netherlands' highest award for bravery. He made a fortune with Shell Oil Company, after which he got into politics and eventually became Prime Minister of the Netherlands 1925-1926 and 1933-1939. Outside conservative circles he's generally reviled for his economic policies during the Great Depression, which reduced large portions of the population to unemployment and poverty.
