Davey Jones' Locker 1,324 Posted July 6, 2011 Broadcaster Derryn Hinch is recovering well from a liver transplant, although the lead surgeon admits the team "sweated" during what was a nerve-wracking operation. Austin Hospital surgeon Professor Bob Jones said not all patients survive the delicate operation. Hinch, who has been battling liver cancer, got the call that a donor organ had become available about 7pm (AEST) on Tuesday and was in surgery by midnight. The operation finished just after 7.30am. "It's a very difficult operation to remove his old liver, which is very damaged and scarred, partly from the treatment that he had," Prof Jones told Fairfax Radio Network, Hinch's employer. "It can be a real battle to get it out." Prof Jones said there was a risk of major blood loss, which would have put pressure on Hinch's heart. "These are operations in which patients can die, so it is possible that Derryn could not have survived it," Prof Jones said. Prof Jones said the broadcaster was still unconscious but would likely wake up from the anaesthetic later on Wednesday, and would probably want to talk. "You know what Derryn's like, it'll be pretty much impossible to stop him." Prof Jones said Hinch would be in intensive care for about two more days and in hospital for three weeks. He warned the broadcaster was not in the clear yet, with the risk of his body rejecting the new organ or infection setting in. Doctors say his mobile phone and computer have been confiscated so he can have some enforced recovery time. Hinch's wife, Chanel Hayton, says they have been innundated with messages of support and thanked all of his friends and fans. Hinch's doctor, Professor Bob Jones, of the Austin Hospital, says he is doing very well. "We're very very pleased medically. The new liver is functioning beautifully and from a medical perspective we're very, very happy," he said. He says Hinch is feeling a little bit flat today. "I think the first day you're just relieved to be alive and today the realisation's set in that it's a very big procedure." Dr Jones says Hinch will probably spend about three weeks in hospital. But he conceded it is possible that Hinch will be well enough to attend his sentencing hearing on contempt charges in two weeks time. "He's a tiger and very strong-willed and very hard to hold him down," he said. "I think he really does need to rest and I think it is starting to catch up with him." Depends on him picking up the bottle - that did for George Best - but it took a few years more. Larry Hagman still drinks and he shows little sign this will be his last year. The 67-year-old was due to be released from hospital yesterday. A spokeswoman for the Austin Hospital says Hinch has suffered a minor setback, but is otherwise recovering well. Hinch was diagnosed with liver cancer last year and given just months to live without a transplant. Doctors said at the time that he made a good recovery for the initial surgery. But they said he faces the standard risks of infection and rejection of the new organ. Barnes regarded them as a bunch of new wave synth-pop wimps until Hutchence kept up with him in an all-night drinking game. After that, he regarded them as his equals... Yes, he gave the Rudd Government a bit of a boost when they came into office since he had the huge international profile and people thought that here was someone who would actually take environmental issues seriously. Unfortunately, he was very weak as Environment Minister and there was a huge fiasco around a home insulation scheme in which some apprentices, working for fly-by-night tradesmen who popped up, were electrocuted. The "Climate Change" part of the Environment portfolio was eventually taken off him and given to another minister. The other problem is that every time he is perceived to do something against the values espoused by Midnight Oil, people can just quote his old song lyrics back at him to point out his alleged hypocrisy - "Party politician don't cross that line", etc. He should probably have been made an under minister to begin with and not been thrust into a major portfolio without any experience. He is doing slightly better now that he has been transferred to the Education, though. In terms of health, I think all of Midnight Oil are okay. Never really heard any drug-related rumours around them but I haven't followed the band that closely. I like their ethos and lyrics more than their actual music.
