In a horror day for the ABC, another prominent member of their staff has gone:

"The man behind many of the ABC's flagship television programs, Ian Carroll, has died from pancreatic cancer.

His death comes on an already sad day for the ABC after the deaths of journalist Paul Lockyer, pilot Gary Ticehurst and cameraman John Bean in a helicopter crash near Lake Eyre on Thursday evening.

Mr Carroll helped establish many news and current affairs programs including Lateline, Four Corners and the 7.30 Report.

He was also a leader in digital media, driving the development of iView and apps for the iPhone and iPad as well as overhauling the ABC's websites.

Mr Carroll died on Friday evening, surrounded by his wife, ABC journalist Geraldine Doogue, and other family and friends."

In other health news - the latest on Jim Stynes - that whole club ought to be ashamed of themselves. :champagne: I think this may well be the end of him.

Yes, did you see this? http://www.abc.net.au/news/2011-08-04/afl-...kennett/2824594

Here is the latest: http://www.abc.net.au/news/2011-08-05/styn...ecovery/2826628

Sounds really bad for Stynes.

Yes I did read it, not looking good for him at all. As far as "tanking" is concerned, I struggle to understand why a club (in any sport) would intentionally loose in order to pick up the top draft picks for the year. Then come back the following season, and the one after that and the one after that, and perform just as badly as they did before - a waste of young talented players. Number one pick should go to number nine on the ladder.

Doesn't look like the latest round of surgery went very well. :skull:

Surgeons will now explore other treatment options in the fight to save the Melbourne Football Club president after the difficult decision not to remove the tumour. Stynes is recovering after exploratory surgery yesterday with medical staff at the Peter MacCallum Cancer Centre still grappling with exactly how to treat the remaining cancer.

Maybe the end is near?

Jim Stynes ... we all know he is very ill, and I haven't got any inside information or spoken to him directly in weeks, but I am very, very worried about his state of health.

...

The new Melbourne coach, Mark Neeld, was announced at the weekend and Jim was nowhere to be seen.

That's not like him. He rarely misses anything around the club, even through this whole illness and I fear he's in real strife at the moment.

But he's come out of desperate situations before and if you believe in prayer, pray for Jim Stynes.

While I was waiting for my train yesterday, I bought one of those cheap and nasty "true Australian crimes' anthologies. It mentioned that Judy Moran has been battling leukaemia for some years. I have never really followed the Melbourne gangland wars (or watched Underbelly) so that was the first I have heard of this. There is no mention of it on her Wikipedia page (not that that means a thing.) Does anyone have info on if the Moll will soon be in a hole?

Davey I strongly recommend watching Underbelly - not only is it a who's who of first-class Australian acting talent, the plot lines are captivating - it's the only program, aside from the footy, that I tune into on a regular basis. Or if you enjoy reading, the books on which the show is based are also a good read.

As for Judy Moran, This is all I could find as of late, I thought she was sicker than she now appears, sort of the ol'I'm to sick to go to jail routine (the same routine that we hear time and time again) - I anticipate the outcome may well be similar to what happened to Carl Williams in the end.

Cool - will have to check Underbelly out. By the way, according to the crime anthology, Judy was starting to throw her weight around in jail in a bid to become top dog, only to be put firmly in her place by Tania Herman (the third person in the Joe/Maria Korp case.)

Yeah crims are an interesting lot, especially when they declare war on each other, a few years ago one could have loaded a DDP team with notable underworld figures and sat back and watched the show, raking in the points along the way.

I don't know if news of the Melbourne gangland war reached Britain though???

Easy to explain to the Brits - let's just say all the convicts you lot shipped out here have started to bear fruit. :champagne:

Just did my annual check of Bart Cumming's health in the pre-Melbourne Cup interviews. :)

He is still in fine form. Is he Australia's answer to Clive Dunn?

As a matter of fact, I did! B) I backed the two French horses for places and, due to Dunaden's success, ended up coming out ahead, which makes me a bit more successful than the DeathList has been this year....

Made the news on Sky Sports in England.

I'd like to think that he made it because he was a damned good player rather than because he was part Aborigine.

The Queens apointed leader of Australia (ie governor general) in the late 70s Sir Zelman Cowan has died at 92 http://www.smh.com.a...1208-1olnx.html

The position of Governor General is actually as the monarch's representative in Australia, it is by no-means a direct leadership role, and although there are several reserve powers that the GG can implement when they see fit, they generally leave any "leading" to the politicians in Canberra. Nor are they appointed to the position by the ruling monarch, that practice began to go out of fashion in the 1930's. They are now appointed by parliament.

Sir Zelman Cowen.

Breaking News:

Molly Meldrum critical after ladder fall

Updated December 15, 2011 21:38:48

Australian music icon Molly Meldrum is in a critical condition in hospital after falling from a ladder in Melbourne.

Ambulance officers were called to his home in Richmond just before 7pm (AEDT).

He was placed in a coma and taken to the Alfred Hospital in a serious condition.

Shortly after his arrival the hospital upgraded his condition to critical.

Meldrum, a music critic, journalist and record producer, has been a part of the Australian music scene since the mid-1960s, starting out as the presenter on popular music program Countdown.

Easily recognisable in his trademark cowboy hat, Meldrum is also well-known internationally on the pop music scene.

For years he presented a regular music segment on Hey Hey It's Saturday and more recently appeared as a judge on Popstars and as a contestant in Dancing With The Stars.

He has interviewed a host of musicians and celebrities including every single member of The Rolling Stones as well as Prince Charles.

Last month he helped honour his good friend and pop star Kylie Minogue when she was inducted into the ARIA's Hall of Fame

Meldrum himself received an ARIA for special achievement in 1993.

He is also a prominent supporter of the St Kilda AFL team.

It is believed Meldrum, 65, lives at his Richmond home with his long-term partner, Rui.

Latest:

Family and friends are optimistic music icon Ian 'Molly' Meldrum will recover from injuries he suffered in a serious fall at his Melbourne home last night.

A gardener called ambulance officers to Meldrum's home in Richmond just before 7:00pm (AEDT), after Meldrum apparently fell around three metres down stairs while putting up Christmas decorations around his spa area.

It is believed he was unconscious when ambulance officers arrived.

He was placed in an induced coma and taken to the Alfred Hospital in a serious condition. Shortly after his arrival the hospital upgraded his condition to critical.

This morning Meldrum's manager Mark Klemens told the ABC that Meldrum underwent "minor surgery" late last night.

"He suffered significant injuries to his chest area, shoulder-blade area, head injuries, [a] fractured skull and some injuries there," he said.

"The surgery was pretty straightforward. It was just to relieve some pressure [on his brain] as I understand it. That all went well."

Meldrum was in a critical but stable condition this morning.

"Really the next 24 hours are critical," Mr Klemens continued.

"He's in an induced coma and obviously that's the period of time that's going to be critical. We'll know more in 24 hours."

He described Meldrum as "fit as a fiddle" and said he was optimistic he would recover.

"Whenever he's been down before he's got straight up," he said.

Family and friends and have gathered at the hospital and long-time friend Garry Spry says he is hopeful the 65-year-old will recover.

"Everyone's pretty up [that] he'll be okay," he said.

"I mean, [for] anyone 65 it is a significant fall. I'm not a doctor. I can't give you the medical thing of it. I just heard everyone is pretty up that he will recover and you know, when you are in an induced coma it can be for 24 hours or 48 hours I believe."

Mr Klemens said Meldrum kept himself in good condition and said he had been touched by the outpouring of support last night and this morning.

"It's quite extraordinary. The outpouring of concern and interest from everybody has been quite amazing and so quick. He is iconic, he's such a part of the Melbourne fabric.

For those of you who don't know Molly Meldrum, here is the start of his classic interview with Prince Charles, where nerves overcome professionalism...

Can't find it on Youtube but later on in the interview, he asks the Prince, "So, how's your Mum?"

Also, here is his notorious interview with Iggy Pop:
