Former deputy Prime Minister of Australia Lionel Bowen has died at 89 http://news.ninemsn....onel-bowen-dies

Not exactly a household name on the other side of the world, but a deeply significant death down under, I guess.

regards,

Hein

True, not a household name, but slightly significant that he was a minister in Gough Whitlam's cabinet

Australian Music Legend Jimmy Little passes away at 75

That is a bit of a shock. I didn't realise he was sick. I guess he won't be paying long distance rates when he uses the Royal Telephone anymore. ;) Arguably the biggest Aussie death of the year so far, possibly eclipsing Stynes.

Both exceeded the confines of the chosen fields, Stynes through charity work and Little by being the first Aboriginal to break through into the white man's music industry.

It is on the ABC now.

"Royal Telephone was the first song by an Indigenous performer to top the pop music charts and become a mainstream hit with white audiences.

It was recorded in the 1960s when Aboriginals were not recognised as citizens."

Apparently his wife only died a few months ago, too.

Troubled actor Matthew Newton has been arrested and charged in the United States after allegedly resisting police and trespassing on property in Miami.

Newton's lawyer, Chris Murphy, confirmed the arrest on Twitter, saying the troubled actor was in Miami to attend arranged appointments with medical experts.

Mr Murphy says Newton was dining with an Australian when he was arrested for an alleged minor misdemeanour.

He says four witnesses say Newton was not under the influence of drugs or alcohol.

"Matthew Newton charged and released for returning to seating area after being warned to leave. Non-violent resist alleged," Mr Murphy said on Twitter.

"Witnesses including owner confirm no alcohol or drugs. Newton asked for police blood test to confirm."

The arrest comes just weeks after Mr Murphy failed in a bid to have an Australian assault charge against the actor dealt with under the Mental Health Act.

Newton is charged with assaulting a Sydney taxi driver in December last year.

Mr Murphy has previously said that Newton had moved to a "peaceful mid-western community" in America to escape from the media glare at home.

Newton is the son of show business couple Bert and Patti Newton.

I wonder who will die first out of Bert and Matthew? Seems like an each-way bet at the moment.

I always thought the little flute solo to be the best part of the song!!

I could do with another hit in the DDP as well - I would like to see him get a state funeral, definitely a worthy candidate...

Edith Bliss, a reporter from Simon Townsend's Wonder World, died today. I can't really recall her at all - she was on in the early days of the show.

It led me to wonder about Simon himself though and his Wikipedia page has some interesting information: "In recent years Townsend has suffered three strokes. In August 2005, he told ABC TV he feared the next stroke might kill him."

Pity - by all accounts he is an absolutely top bloke.
