My point was that "African-American" is starting to be wrongly used as a synonym for black non-Americans by people who don't think about what they're saying.

They're still African in origin though.

I should probably have made the comment in the English Language thread. It would have been better understood there.

It's not even just starting... I remember it happening at the Olympics 20 years ago. No non-American who just won a medal for their own country wants to be called an American. It happens frequently and then they issue retractions. It makes sense that it happens, because of how we're taught euphemisms.
