Cowboy Ronnie 78 Posted October 25, 2004 Head of the US Supreme Court William Rehnquist was just diagnosed with thyroid cancer (I can never figure out how to post links, so Google it if you're interested in the story), but I don't know how immediately that would bring the gavel down on the old boy. Will do a bit of research. A Supreme Court justice is well overdue to go - the current nine have been together for over 10 years. John Paul Stevens is 84, Rhenquist 80. Would be interested to see if they pass the UK fame test.
Typhoid Harry 23 Posted October 25, 2004 Would be interested to see if they pass the UK fame test. He certainly passes the Wiki-test: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/William_Rehnquist I won't miss the self-righteous prick. Edit: Wait, may he hold out until there's a less self-righteous prick in the White House. Better the devil you know...
Night 4 Posted October 25, 2004 Chief Justice Rehnquist, U.S. Supreme Court. Looks like a very strong contender indeed, given his age, stress and thyroid cancer.
The Yeti 14 Posted November 3, 2004 "SCOTUS news: Chief Justice William H. Rehnquist announced last week that he was going to return to the Supreme Court yesterday. He did not return. According to the New York Times his office released a terse statement saying that the Chief Justice spent 7 days at Bethesda Naval Hospital where he was treated for thyroid cancer. He underwent a tracheotomy so he could breathe and he is now being given both chemotherapy and radiation treatment. Medical experts say this evidence suggests that the cancer was not successfully removed and that even with heroic treatment, patients with this type of cancer usually die within a year. Should the election end up in the Supreme Court, it is not known whether Rehnquist will particpate in the case and vote on the outcome. Should he decline to participate due to ill health, the deadlock in the country might end up in a Court itself deadlocked 4-4. In such an event, the lower court ruling stands but no legal precedent is set. An alternative scenario is that Chief Justice Rehnquist resigns and that President Bush makes a recess appointment, which does not require Senate confirmation. If Bush were to appoint a new justice without Senate confirmation who then casts the deciding vote to make Bush president I fear for the future of the country." VileBody 11 Posted November 3, 2004 If you want to think about being afraid, I'd be glad you're not in a basement in Faluja with an AK47 and stick of semtex - there's gonna a lot serious pumped marines knocking on the door tomorrow morning now this US democracy sh*t is out of the way...Time to load up the toyota and get the hell out of Dodge, I reckon By the way - when these nutters do blow themselves into Paradise does each one get a separate set of 72 virgins or do the virgins multi-task? And what do chick suicide bombers get?
Teddy 21 Posted November 3, 2004 By the way - when these nutters do blow themselves into Paradise does each one get a separate set of 72 virgins or do the virgins multi-task? I can only assume that they get their own 72 virgins, or else with all the suicide bombers heading their way, there wouldn't be 72 virgins for long. I don't think a recruitment campaign based upon meeting 72 whores would be as succesful - unless you were trying to recruit Wayne Rooney
Moosey 3 Posted November 3, 2004 Ok, so they each get 72 virgins. That seems reasonable recompense for blowing yourself the sh1t away. But now you've got me curious: If you get 72 virgins and knock one of them up, what happens? Does she i) get replaced by another virgin, in which case you will end up having to shag the ones you don't like and just snog the ones you do like (to keep them around)? And do the substitute virgins get progressively ropier as the bottom of the virgin-barrel gets scraped? Or ii) get to stay, leaving you with 71 virgins and a girlfriend that moans at you for not paying her enough attention any more?
Grim Reaper 186 Posted November 3, 2004 All very good questions Everyone is happily accepting thats its 72 virgins, but who came up with that idea? Isn't there a religion that will offer 73 virgins for a martyrdom... or perhaps 72 virgins and a bonus babe who's learnt a few tricks over the years - surely one of those undergrounds sects could go the extra mile to attract a few new disciples... Mortician 2 Posted January 10, 2005 Looks like there's another enlighted liberal type just waiting for Old Bill to drop... For future reference we present: Judge Paul Bastine Who has refused a woman a divorce from her abusive husband even though he's in prison for beating her (amongst other things)... She's pregnant by another man, her husband didn't contest the divorce but Pauly says she can't be divorced because her baby needs a paternity test after it's born. Even Fox news struggle to put a right wing spin on this one.... Fox Link Although they do give it a good go! Supreme Court Justice here he comes!

Typhoid Harry 23 Posted January 19, 2005 There are several members of the court who would have retired had not Bush been re-elected. Now, however, all, including Rehnquist, are determined to hang on until there isn't a religious zealot in the White House.
Guest Guest Yank Posted January 20, 2005 (merged with main Rehnquist thread - ATJ) Politics - Reuters Ailing Chief Justice, Looking Frail, Swears in Bush WASHINGTON (Reuters) - U.S. Chief Justice William Rehnquist (news - web sites), looking frail from cancer and using a cane, administered the oath of office to President Bush (news - web sites) on Thursday and then promptly left the podium. Rehnquist, 80, made his first appearance at a public event since October, when he was diagnosed with thyroid cancer and underwent a tracheotomy. He also has been undergoing radiation and chemotherapy. Wearing his black robes of office, Rehnquist was the last dignitary to arrive and join Bush and others on the stage for the swearing-in ceremony. Just 16 minutes before he was due to administer the oath of office, Rehnquist used a cane and walked slowly down the steps of the East Front of the Capitol, with his administrative assistant and top aide, Sally Rider, behind him. Introduced by Sen. Trent Lott (news, bio, voting record), Rehnquist smiled as the crowd applauded. He wore a light-colored scarf around his neck and a black cap. His voice sounded hoarse, and his tracheotomy tube, which helps him breathe, was visible. He read the 35-word oath and then congratulated Bush. They shook hands, and Rehnquist then left the podium, before Bush's speech. Rehnquist has missed Supreme Court arguments in November, December and January because of his cancer, but a court spokeswoman said he had been determined to attend Bush's swearing-in ceremony. The chief justice traditionally administers the oath of office to the president. Last week, Rehnquist was at the Capitol to check out logistics for the event and to walk the route, as he always does. He has occasionally worked out of the Supreme Court since late December, but it was his first appearance at a public event since Oct. 18. Rehnquist, a staunch conservative, has been chief justice since 1986 and a member of the Supreme Court since 1972. There has been widespread speculation that his illness might force him to retire, either during or at the end of the current court term which lasts through June. His retirement would give Bush the opportunity to name a successor. The last court vacancy occurred in 1994, the longest period of stability since 1823. Tuber Mirum 126 Posted January 21, 2005 He wore a light-colored scarf around his neck and a black cap. I wonder if he meant any symbolism by this. In the Good Old Days, (Crappy Music Hall TV Show) British judges also used to wear a black cap on special occasions. Rehnquist, a staunch conservative, has been chief justice since 1986 and a member of the Supreme Court since 1972. There are several members of the court who would have retired had not Bush been re-elected. Now, however, all, including Rehnquist, are determined to hang on until there isn't a religious zealot in the White House. Conservative or not, you have to admire this guy, putting his health secondary to preventing Bush from Packing the Supreme Court with his know-nothing, dumbtwunt friends and relations. I predict he won't last that much longer. Certainly not another 4 years.

Guest Guest Posted February 8, 2005 It is interesting that there hasnt been an appointment since 1994, 5 of the 9 are broadly republican so one would have expected at least one of them to have retired. Maybe they dont like Dubya.

As they appear to expect 72 virgins, once the nutter has had his way with the first one, she's no longer a virgin. Presumably, she's replaced to keep the constant 72 virgins. does that logic hold???? That would in effect amount to having an infinite number of virgins at your disposal, but no more than 72 present at any given time. Which would be sufficient for most people. Probably. PS: There are doctors here in Germany who are a dab hand with the needle and thread and can restore a woman's virginity. It's very much in demand for Turkish girls who grew up here and then go back home to get married. That might be come in handy if there were ever a shortage of virgins in paradise. No sign of a similar treatment for men yet though.
