Clorox Bleachman 2,441 Posted May 16, 2019 UPDATE 3 1 & 2 Hits/Misses Richard Cole | 9th April | 1 team Manuel Lujan Jr | 25th April | no teams David McNee | 26th April | 1 team Doris Day | 13th May | 5 teams Tim Conway | 14th May | 13 teams Bob Hawke | 16th May | 17 teams Okay, okay... maybe all this drought talk was justified. A mere 2 teams scored points in the space of 8 weeks; Joey with Doolittle Raider Dick Cole, and Biblio with bad cop David McNee. We also had our first miss. Nobody plumped for 90-year-old politician Manuel Lujan Jr, who got a Wires/Mail obit. That was the situation until a week which has been a calamity for 3 names, among them, a shortarse and a buxom blonde. Only one of them was called Dorf, though. 19 teams pull p(o)ints and and msc climbs to the top by a whisker. The Mad Hatter scores a whopping 38 points in absentia. Another big winner is theoldlady, who soars from 15th to 5th place. Toast and Willz are off the starting line - just - leaving only the host at zero. Where he's supposed to be. Scores in full: 1. msc - 44 =2. Death Impends - 43 =2. Joey Russ - 43 4. The Mad Hatter - 42 5. theoldlady - 40 6. CaptainChorizo - 37 =7. An Fear Beag - 35 =7. Sir Creep - 35 9. Book - 30 10. The Old Crem - 27 11. Pedro67 - 26 =12. FixedBusiness - 25 =12. RadGuy - 25 =14. Banana - 23 =14. Bibliogryphon - 23 =14. Skinny kiltrunner - 23 17. Gooseberry Crumble - 18 18. Clorox Bleachman 2,441 Posted July 11, 2019 UPDATE 4 1 2 3 Hits/Misses Dr. John | 5th June | 1 team Pat Bowlen | 13th June | 3 teams Beth Chapman | 26th June | 13 teams John McCririck | 5th July | 15 teams Sutopo Purwo Nugroho | 7th July | 7 teams Freddie Jones | 9th July | no teams Dr. John was a musician, in case you didn't know, and it was this fact which meant he qualified for my team. The team with the longest names taking the longest to score. Fitting. The month which followed saw a few heavy hitters go. After three teams touched down with Pat Bowlen, reality TV star Beth Chapman bailed out a further thirteen (including 2 Wildcards). 15 teams made a bet that John McCririck wouldn't see another Summer. They were wrong, but the host is so generous that he awarded points anyway. Sutopo Purwo Nugroho's death caused a seismic shift in the leaderboard, whilst actor Freddie Jones was a miss. Msc loses his title to The Mad Hatter. He is also threatened by our dark horse, theoldlady. Death Impends clings to the Top 5 despite being the only non-scorer this time. Gooseberry Crumble once again shines with just one hit. Press F to pay respects to Skinny kiltrunner. 2 Wildcards scoring a grand total of... zero Scores in full: 1. The Mad Hatter - 57 2. msc - 50 3. theoldlady - 47 4. CaptainChorizo - 44 5. Death Impends - 43 6. Joey Russ - 42 7. An Fear Beag - 41 8. Sir Creep - 38 =9. Book - 37 =9. FixedBusiness - 37 11. Gooseberry Crumble - 35 12. The Old Crem - 34 13. Pedro67 - 32 14. Bibliogryphon - 30 15. Banana - 29 16. The Unknown Man - 25 17. RadGuy - 24 18. Skinny kiltrunner - 23 19. YoungWillz - 20 20. I had Chapman and Sutopo (of which only Sutopo was a WC for me, I believe) and get zero points? Is there a penalty that I failed to see, or some other negative scoring adjustment applied? You chose Chapman as a WC after Fatima Ali died. Chapman and Sutopo both carried small penalties and you didn't hit enough bonuses to counteract them. Believe it or not, you scored 0 points both times round. Near the end I'll get someone to adjudicate the scores, however all my calculations seem to be right so far. Toast 16,151 Posted July 11, 2019 Will any of this ever be explained?
Clorox Bleachman 2,441 Posted July 11, 2019 17 minutes ago, Toast said: Will any of this ever be explained? Not this year. The majority of bonuses are random - to give an example from last year, bass players were worth an extra 2 points. I will say that the easiest way of scoring points is by selecting unique/D40 picks (as the first post explains). Since this my first time running anything, I am sticking to Joey's style of hosting over the past 2 years. Removing the element of secrecy would make it a different game. That's not what was asked of me.
Toast 16,151 Posted July 11, 2019 I can't see why the bonuses (or penalties) can't be revealed once the game has started, or once the relevant pick has expired. Keeping it secret throughout takes away the fun element.

Sir Creep 7,070 Posted July 11, 2019 Well theoldlady went from 40 to 47 thanks to Chapman. Even Sir Creep got 3 points. Penalty?? Ware dis penalty?

This would be different as the bonuses would not be disclosed until after people had selected and submitted their teams.
Skinny kiltrunner 553 Posted July 11, 2019 Clorox, I must apologize. I really did mean my comments rather tongue in cheek, no malicious intent, but it seems to have stirred some discussion. I take solace that I would apparently have lost points with both of these picks if they hadn't been wildcards, so I came out even. My respect to anyone that takes on the challenge of running one of these.
Clorox Bleachman 2,441 Posted July 11, 2019 Hah, it's all good. No offence taken. I've been told that my write-ups haven't broken down bonuses like Joey's. There are 3 reasons for this: 1. I'm an eejit and didn't notice this earlier 2. I prefer rounding up a series of hits to isolating one 3. This allows me to be more consistent with my updates than the previous host was. By doing this I'm not able to cover as much information. This may not be the most exciting way of doing it, but I'm going with it for now. Crucially, entrants are given the same amount of details before the deadline as they were last year, so it's not 'harder' to pick a team. And lastly, please don't be afraid of voicing your concerns, folks.
