Oldest Living football league players

Charlie Chase died a couple of months ago - https://www.brightonandhovealbion.com/news/1616133/obituary-charlie-chase

Described by the club itself as its oldest player. But before we rub off Reg Hipkin (1921) as being deceased - as this comment says in this website -

https://www.northstandchat.com/showthread.php?378381-Charlie-Chase-RIP - his great-uncle Jack Vitty is alive so not sure we can take even the club's word for it.

Cyril Lawrence, the 3rd oldest confirmed footballer alive has contracted - https://www.soundhealthandlastingwealth.com/health-news/coronavirus-uk-care-home-deaths-jump-ten-fold-in-a-week/ - sadly, it really doesn't look good:

Quote

‘I never in a million years thought this would happen at the end of life. My dad is battling on but it’s just a question of time now.

‘Dad is the longest surviving player of Blackpool Rochdale and Wrexham football clubs.

‘He’s a battler and I know he’s doing his utmost to beat this but I know he won’t. I’m waiting totally heartbroken supporting my mum.

‘My mum will be 100 on June 3, and dad 100 on the 12th. To be cruelly taken like this is just so very sad.’

Mr Lawrence’s early career at sea was spent on the Arctic convoys delivering aid and essential supplies to the Soviet Union.

He represented the Royal Navy at football, appearing in exhibition matches in Cairo and Alexandria and against New South Wales at the Sydney Cricket Ground.

Sad news as he was quite active for his age (or was recently)

The link to this can no longer be found, nor can any other link to him turning 100. It's unusual for a page to just disappear like that for no particular reason which makes me wonder...

Cheers Ebless, Youngwillz posted it in the Time Added thread. Strictly speaking, it should go into coronavirus victims, but probably an overkill.

So that's two gone from COVID. Woan's was from dementia - nice write-up here: http://www.yeovilpress.co.uk/blog/2020/05/02/yeovil-news-football-legend-don-woan-lived-and-breathed-the-game/

I thought I saw on a forum somewhere that he died a while back but can't find that post at the moment. Would be good if he is still going.

Do you know when the Barry Hugman site will be up again?

Hi first you can access Barry Hugmans site at barryhugmansfootballers.com

George Stewart I found a George Girdwood Stewart alive in Perth and he is 100 this year but he's not the footballer

The footballer has no 2nd Christian name just George

I have seen the certificate

His mother's surname was edgar

So no progress but he was in Scotland in 1970 when his mother died

Edited and put Lavery in.

However,  Mick Nagy (b. 1929) died as long ago as 1970, so he's been removed.

I can find no record of this happening in UK. Do we know where and when in 1970 this occurred ?

Hi Michael,

Welcome! OoO seems to be the best authority here on this topic but I’m happy to help in any way I can too.

Do you have a cut off year for when you know Dewis Brown was definitely still alive?

His birth record in the GRO matches the date on Hugman’s but he’s listed as “William Dewiss Brown” (note the double ‘s’). Not sure if this is of any use. I can’t find a death record in England and Wales up to 2019.

Well, going on the fact Dewiss Brown moved to Canada, and that he was born in 1919 - I'm pretty confident that this - http://cvgenealogygroup.org/wp-content/uploads/2017/05/CVRobits1986-2008.pdf (go down a bit) is our man. Died aged 80, in Canada, in 1999. There really can't be that many William Dewis(s) Brown's of that age around.

Billy Molloy has also died this year.

Good morning my name is Michael Featherstone I work with Barry Hugman  on Hugman's footballers and all of his football books.

I have done a detailed search for footballers born pre 1931

John Lavery is alive I believe I spoke to him around 40 years ago his wife died in 2005

in Bradford. he is on 192.com living with his son Nigel

Michael Featherstone

Lavery is dead and a long time ago (1997). His wife only just passed away this year. You must've had a different John Lavery. Paddy Durkan was indeed the oldest Dundalk player at his death in 2013 - https://www.facebook.com/pages/category/Sports-League/Irish-League-Nostalgia-893609260680806/  http://www.dundalkfcwhoswho.com/player.php?id=187&fbclid=IwAR3f_Zse3yQfp1PyOOwBgtvUXzFsyXrj2pbE_rERkYnwfJ57ObA-6LKb_zw

John Ollerenshaw is another who has only just died, also well into his 90's. No exact date but he was notable enough for Arsenal FC to mark his passing in their programme from their game vs Watford last month - https://www.arsenal.com/sites/default/files/documents/ArsenalvWatford_MatchProgramme_26July2020.pdf

(Go to the In Memoriam page).

Also only recently gone is Jimmy Kirk - https://www.tonbridgeangels.co.uk/news/jimmy-kirk-rip/1427

It's a shame that I can't be certain of some of these chaps being alive to give them their due credit, but one can only plug away I guess. At least I'm only a short while afterwards in terms of reporting their deaths.

Hi

Just found this thread...very interesting. My particular interest is Watford players, so looking for any confirmation on -

Bernard Royden Evans  DOB 7.10.29  Debut 1951

Laurence Edward Adams  DOB 14.2.31  Debut 1952

Geoffrey Gordon Steiner  DOB 8.6.28  Debut 1952

One where I can add info is Tommy Carpenter. I made contact via his daughter 5 years ago when he was aged 90 and had suffered 2 strokes.
