The Tams
Wiki American R&B and soul vocal group from Atlanta, Georgia, formed in 1960, Albert Cottle replaced Floyd Ashton due the latter's alcoholism – presumably this contributed to Ashton's death in April 1979

Floyd Ashton 15 Aug 1933 – 10 Apr 1979 (45)
Albert Cottle 03 Jul 1941 – 11 Feb 1982 (40)
Horace "Sonny" Key 13 Apr 1934 – 20 Apr 1991 (57)
Charles Pope 07 Aug 1936 – 11 Jul 2013 (76) Obit
Joseph Pope 06 Nov 1933 – 16 Mar 1996 (62) Mention of death

Robert Lee Smith 18 Mar 1936 – Living
14/02/1970 Be Young, Be Foolish, Be Happy #32 Originally released in the States in 1968
31/07/1971 Hey Girl Don't Bother Me #1 Originally released in the States in 1964
NB: Wiki seems to think Smith was born in 1950! According to his own Facebook he was 78 in 2013 meaning he was born 1935/6 (records say 1936 to be precise). Obits for Charles Pope erroneously state that he was the last living original member. Smith outlived him and was still with us as of 2019.
NB2:
Today the group is led by Albert Cottle Jr. (b. 1969) who is referred to in multiple sources as being Charles Pope's son. He is the biological child of Albert Cottle, but Pope became his stepfather in 1981 after marrying Judy Dianne Futcher (b. 1945), who was previously wed to Cottle Sr. The Collins Complete UK Hit Singles book and various sources online erroneously give Cottle's DOB as 02 Aug 1941.

Thanks @YoungWillz. I was losing my head over this last night.

1) Ashton – Having had another look, the stronger sources online do indicate that Ashton performed on Hey Girl. So I've added him. Some amateur "golden oldies" groups on FB seem to wish him a happy birthday every year. A little bit embarrassing because the Ancestry records clearly show he died way back in 1979... probably from his alcoholism.

2) Cottle – Spent ages looking for birth/married records of him and Futcher on Ancestry. Couldn't find anything. What I did find however was her birth record: Judy Dianne Futcher b. 24 Aug 1945 in North Carolina. The death record for the Albert Cottle I previously found lived in Georgia, but he was from the same area of North Carolina as Futcher. It's him (given that he seems to be the only Albert Cottle on there I'm not surprised but I wanted proof!). He was only 40 when he died. Just speculation but it kind of looks like his bandmate went off with his wife then he took his own life? Happy families. Anyway, added.

3) Smith – great find! That link didn't come up on Google when I searched. Alive and seemingly well then.

We have a full house!

Wiki Jamaican reggae singer from Portland, real name Cecil Nicholas Thomas
13/06/1970 Love of the Common People #9 Cover of a single by The Four Preps and later popularised by Paul Young
NB: Such a mystery. He's dead, that much is known. The Internet tends to suggest he killed himself and nobody seems to be disputing that. What is contentious is where and when he died. London is given as the place. 1990 is the most commonly used year, and yet it's wrong. His death was already known by 1986. Some interesting conversation here. Can't find him in the GRO or on Ancestry for whatever reason.
NB2: This just gets stranger. His son doesn't know when and how he died and wants to know where he's buried.

NB: Wikipedia and most online sources suggest that she died on 8th November 1984 from cancer in New York City. The place and year are correct but her death certificate is on Ancestry and says 15th October. Rather unhelpfully it says born "c. 1945".
NB2: Most sources says she was from "Jeutyn, Alaska". One problem... no such place exists!

You probably know this stuff but Casey Synge was born Annette Casey in Dundalk, Ireland, moving to the UK in 1964 to study. She now lives in Cambridge with her husband Richard Synge, and I think they were married circa 1971? There's a reference here to Richard Michael Synge and Annette Casey with a child born 1973: https://www.peterselleck.com/legacy/f30.htm which could be them?

You probably know this stuff but Casey Synge was born Annette Casey in Dundalk, Ireland, moving to the UK in 1964 to study. She now lives in Cambridge with her husband Richard Synge, and I think they were married circa 1971? There's a reference here to Richard Michael Synge and Annette Casey with a child born 1973: https://www.peterselleck.com/legacy/f30.htm which could be them?

I think you assume too much of me. When I'm doing 18 acts at a time, I'm seldom thorough!

Annette M. Casey. Born 1944 according to the Irish records. Added.

Thanks!

Not looked into Jeff Calvert yet.

Detail on Max West who was born Geraint Wyn Hughes in Port Talbot here: https://geraintwynhughes.wordpress.com/about/ Utterly fascinating story. Son of Graham Hughes and an actress who I'm presuming was Catherine Dillon from the Sea Hawk mention so IMDB may have this wrong. The article calls her Catherine Dolan (born Phyllis Mary Dolan 1926, died 1991). Says he was 13 in 1966, so puts him born c1953?

This is a strange one. The only person in the GRO I see that he could be is Geraint W Hughes b. 1954 in Bangor. But that's at the other side of Wales!

I will put c. 1953 for now. Cheers!

Such a strange act. Reasonably well known considering they were essentially a one hit wonder for their Automatic Lover, #35 and yet not the song I was expecting...

I’m very familiar with “Baby Baby” because of its use in popular culture. It didn’t even chart, but seems to be their signature song... and yet I don’t really understand how it grew to being so widely known in the timespan from its original release?

Also unusual that Edwards is still with them as the last remaining original member. Drummers are normally the first out the door and punk bands in particular would often dispose of and replace their drummers within a couple of years.
