Deathlist Cup 2023

Recommended Posts

Right, where were we? Well, we can now cross "small-town morning radio show DJ who entered hospice late last month" off the DL Cup I Spy card, thanks to the passing of Dave King. King hosted a number of radio shows in the Lubbock, Texas-area going back to his airwaves debut in 1968, and his death is a unique hit for gcreptile. That would have put him six points clear, except Banana has fired back immediately with Ronnie Coker. Coker was a baseball coach who took Captain Shreve and Parkway to LHSAA state titles, before leaving sport and becoming a Christian motivational speaker. aog vs DDT remains pointless.

Neat, I'm kind of oogling that "biggest score in a loss ever" record. Maybe Munawwar Rana next? How is he still alive?

Did I get the scores wrong last time? Maybe.... maybe I did. Anyway, Yannis Markopoulos was probably the leading composter for film and TV in Greece during the 1960s and 1970s, breaking through with the 1963 arthouse smash Young Aphrodites and perhaps peaking in Anglophone popularity with the BBC series Who Pays the Ferryman? gcreptile goes four points clear again.

Points all around for the death of Christy Dignam

https://www.fm104.ie/news/buzz/aslan-singer-christy-dignam-has-passed-away/

He's not lyin' (lion) (Aslan/lion get it?). Some 35 years after first becoming an essential DDP pick, Irish rock star Christy Dignam has finally left the stage. Aslan were one of Ireland's biggest bands for some three decades, regularly selling out the biggest venues the country had to offer. However, they were more famous to deadpoolers thanks to frontman Dignam's repeated avowals of how he only had a few months left to live every December. But, as with Superstar Billy, the Grim Reaper is seemingly in a mood to clear out some paperwork these days, and all four teams get three points.

Bit of a risky bet, I just noticed a tiny slowdown in his twitter output. But basically, I picked him because he had surpassed the life expectancy median of pancreatic cancer without treatment, which is three months.

If it is of any interest, I'm still checking for info on Joe Plater.

His wife made a tribute page:

https://josephplater.muchloved.com/

From there you can get more info, I hope that at some point, the official date of death will be revealed. I also plan to sign up for these official registry sites when I'm back from Bavaria.

Went back and forth between Daniel Ellsberg and Daniel N. Paul for inclusion for June. Decided to stick with Paul (and drop Ellsberg) because I figured nobody else would select him.

Both my top 2 subs died (Catt/Markopoulos) and would’ve put me in the lead.

I pity the fool that beats me and doesn’t go on to win it all.

How about that hay fever, huh? One person not suffering from the insanely high levels of pollen in southern England right now is Daniel Ellsberg, who has escaped the dry eyes and sensation of trying to deep-throat barbed wire by dying. The man behind the Pentagon Papers leak, which revealed the true extent of America's undercover operations during the Vietnam War, has ruined any chances people had of a guaranteed 5 points in next year's DDP by deciding to die six months early. gcreptile opens up a possibly insurmountable leader over Banana.

Our match-up is now the highest-scoring Cup game ever, with best ever winning and losing score, no matter who it is.

No we can't use "they were all in love with dying" as the tagline here because Teresa Taylor, aka Teresa Nervosa, had left the Butthole Surfers long before they recorded "Pepper". Taylor was one of two drummers for the sorta-punk sorta-noise-rock i-mean-i-always-felt-they-were-a-little-grungey-tbh band up until 1989, and also went on to act in (and appear on the movie poster for) Richard Linklater's of-its-time movie Slacker. Two people who certainly aren't slackers are gcreptile and Banana, who both get another three points each.

And Vance Masters saves us the additional complications of having to go to a coin toss to decide one half of this year's final. Masters was a session drummer who joined The Guess Who on the downswing of their career. He developed COVID-19 while in a healthcare centre, which I suppose is vaguely ironic when you think about it. alt obits guy gets 4 points and goes clear of DDT in their clash.

Daniel N. Paul may have been the ultimate "will Yahoo get around to mirroring any death reports?" pick for this year's DDP, but there were no worries about a QO in the Deathlist Cup. An elder of the Mi'kmaq First Nations peoples of Canada, his 1993 book We Were Not The Savages was the first historical tome written by a First Nationser and was seen by many as Canada's answer to Bury My Heart at Wounded Knee. alt obits guy gets to wear the ceremonial headdress and it seems like our final is now set in stone.
