drol 11,946 Posted February 9 Still two Constitutional Council presidents over 90: Pierre Mazeaud, 95 this year, and Roland Dumas, 102 this year. Dumas is completely overdue at this point. Mazeaud was still granting interviews last year, seemed a bit frail but nothing worrying. He almost died when climbing Mont Blanc in 1961. 1
Lafaucheuse 4,051 Posted February 9 9 février 2024 Hit n°3 Death penalty inevitable Former minister of justice and renowned lawyer Robert Badinter has died aged 95 to provide our deathlist with a quick follow-up hit. Badinter was born in Paris in 1928 in a bourgeois family which exiled in Lyon during WWII. After having graduated from Law School in Paris in the early 1950's, he became a lawyer for almost thirty years, until 1981. Between 1974 and 1976 he defended Patrick Henry who was suspected of having killed an 8-year-old child : this marked the start of a period of activism against death penalty for Badinter. In 1981, Mitterrand appointed him minister of justice and after many heated debates, he succeeded in having the death penalty abolished in October of the same year. At this time, he was one of the most influential left wing politician and one of the most famous faces of french politics. He then became the president of the Conseil Constitutionnel between 1986 and 1995, before being succeeded by another of the candidates on our list, Roland Dumas. In his later years, he remained a senator until 2011 and was frequently interview on his view about current political affairs. He is survived by his wife, author and philosopher Elisabeth Badinter and his ex-wife and current 100 yo pick Anne Vernon. After a quiet month of January, things have seemed to accelerate as Badinter marks a welcomed third hit for our list in the space of a single week. He was selected this year at number 14 and died on the 80th anniversary of his father deportation during the Rue Sainte-Catherine roundup in 1943.

Quite shocked that Dumas as outlived Badinter, the former has completly disappeared from public life and is obese while the latter was again seen recently on TV…

La Tombe 354 Posted February 21 Micheline Presle was perhaps the last actress of the Golden age of French cinema, she was part of the same generation as Michèle Morgan and Danielle Darrieux. Her loss is a huge loss for French cinema !!!

Lafaucheuse 4,051 Posted February 22 21 février 2024 Hit n°4 La Sainte Chérie au Paradis Retrouvé Legendary actress Micheline Presle has died aged 101 to provide the French Deathlist with another quick hit. Presle was born in Paris in 1922 and started her film career in 1937. In 1940, "Paradis Perdu" launched her career and propelled her to the centre stage. In the following years, she became one of the leading-ladies of french cinema, alongside Michèle Morgan and Danielle Darrieux. In the meantime, she pursued her career in the United States where she met her second husband, actor and producer William Marshall, with whom she eventually had a daugther, the only female screenwriter Cesar-winner Tonie Marshall (for whom she played in ''Venus Beauty''). At the end of the 1960's, she stared in the succesfful TV-series "Les Saintes Chéries".During a career spanning 9 decades (!), she played alongside the most famous actors and actresses of her time, including Gerard Philippe ("The Devil in the Flesh", 1947), Paul Newman ("The Prize", 1963), Marcello Mastroiani ("L'assassino", 1961), Gina Lollobrigida, Alain Delon, Lino Ventura (and even @Book's favorite, Liselotte Pulver !), becoming herself a legend of french cinema. At the time of her death she was the doyenne of French cinema and occupied the 4th spot of our common list, becoming also our 4th hit and leaving 6 centenarians left. Given the current state of affairs, it is doubtful that there will be that many left at the end of the year…

Lafaucheuse 4,051 Posted February 23 21 février 2024 Hit n°5 We've got a Prize ! " leaving 6 centenarians left. Given the current state of affairs, it is doubtful that there will be that many left at the end of the year…" we wrote yesterday after Presle's passing, unaware that on the same day, French-American neuroscientist Roger Guillemin made that prediction come true sooner than expected ! Guillemin was born in Dijon in 1924. After several years as a doctor in France, he moved to the United States were he pursued his career as a teacher and where he was ultimately naturalized. In the 1970's, him and his work-team discovered the existence of neurohormone, a chemical messenger produced by a neuron which acts like a hormone. This discovery earned them the Nobel Prize for medicine in 1977. His co-worker on the project, Andrzej Wiktor Schally, with whom he got some feud, is still alive aged 97. Throughout his long career, he received many prices amongst which the National Medal of Science and was inducted into both the American Academy of Science and the French Academy of Science. After his medical career, he began painting and was also inducted into the American Academy of Science and Arts. This year, he occupied the 45th spot of our list and becomes our 5th hit, the 4th of which in february : a spectacular month for french deathlist, and a devastating one for french centenarians. Let's hope it continues that way !
