Actually… he can’t even move his face when his wife kisses him. Pretty sure he’ll be dead by 2027

He looks like Boris Johnson marrying his 4th wife in 15 years' time.

big death and sad one yes, but not to forget that his show was the main platform for peadocriminals (fellow pick Matzneff, Tony Duvert, far right activist Renaud Camus and others) and he apparently discussed the legalization of pedophilia with Catherine Dolto in 2001. Not to say it’s his fault, I get what you say. Wouldn’t consider him the saddest hit of the list this far anyway, Presle or Badinter would take it

To quote the late great Joan Rivers:

”89, unexpected? More like 89, about god damn time!” :P

Le roi Lire est mort

Bernard Pivot, prominent TV host, journalist, writer and literary critic has died aged 89 to propel the score of our French deathlist into the dozens. Pivot was born in Lyon in 1935 and studied law before moving to Paris to pursue a formation in journalism. After having worked for Le Figaro, Pivot created his own literary journal called ''Lire''. He then moved on and became the host of the literary TV show ''Ouvrez les Guillemets'' from 1973 to 1974. That latter year, he founded the TV show ''Apostophes'', in which he received such famous and acclaimed writers as Marguerite Duras, Milan Kundera, Vladimir Nabokov or Françoise Sagan. The TV show ended up being one of the most famous program of the time and attracted 2 to 3 million viewers every Friday before its end in 1990. The next year, Pivot hosted another prominent cultural show called ''bouillon de culture'' in which he received figures of the literary, artistic, political and sport worlds. This illustrious program came to an end in 2001, an event which contemporary academician and historian Pierre Nora described as a "national mourning". After his successful TV career, Pivot was elected as a member of the Academy Goncourt, one of the most prestigious french literary prize : he then succeeded Edmonde Charles Roux as its president in 2014, an occupation he kept until 2019. During his lifetime, he also founded both the French Spelling Championships and the World Spelling Championships which came to an end in 2005 and wrote several books about literature, dictionaries and the experience of the reader. After his retirement in 2019, he experienced a period of ill health ans succumbed to a cancer while being picked at the 18th position this year.

Edgar Morin hospitalised, but well enough to send a video from the hospital for a public gathering with Pope Francis.

I’m quite amazed by how good this list is doing actually and, not to jinkx ourselves, but I won’t be surprised now if we reach 18-20. The thing is last year was so dry in term of french deaths that a lot of lingerers are now, unsurprisingly, giving up. Condé was long overdue, so are Chirac, Marie France Garaud, Morin and Dumas. I wouldn’t rule out some other frails and ills to drop dead from nowhere (Le Pen, Delon, Laborde or Hardy). A few nonagenarian could also surprise us (Geminiani, Villalonga, Serre or Dumont) and I sense some unexpected hits such as Fontaine, Pivot, Renaud or Léaud.

obit to come for Condé, probably tomorrow as I’m quite busy today

also, to end the Clark’s debate, I just found out thanks to La Tombe that Sophia Loren was naturalized french. I’d say She doesn’t belong in such a french list as much of her work and notoriety has relied on her italian work.

From my prevision list, Pivot and Garaud now gone, Chirac just turned 91 (and you know What they say about dying close to your birthday…) and Morin supposedly still hospitalized. Wouldn’t rule out a third may hit

We are at 11 hits...Who do you think will be gone by the end of the year ?

I think : Edgar Morin, Roland Dumas, André Chandernagor, Jean-Marie Le Pen, Philippe Bouvard, Françoise Hardy, François Cheng, Geneviève Page, Charles Bietry, Raphael Gémianimi, Jean-Pierre Serre.

Why ? because they have been not so much seen in the medias for quite a long time.

Not sure about the fact that their absence means they’ll die though.
my feelings are

80-100% chance of scoring : Bernadette Chirac, Edgar Morin, Roland Dumas, François Cheng, Jean Pierre Léaud, Jean Paul Guerlain

60-80% chance : Catherine Laborde, Charles Bietry, Alain Delon, André Chandernargor, Jean Marie Le Pen, Françoise Hardy

50%   Gérard Mulliez, Brigitte Fontaine, Marthe Villalonga, Jean Pierre Serre, Raphaël Geminiani

I’d say the likes of Bardot, Line Renaud, Renaud, Jodorowski, Pagny and others are safe for the year

I think we can reach 18-19 but I doubt we’ll make it past 20…

I think Laborde is not near death door but her dementia must be at at an advanced stage now.

Chirac quite not sure for this year, she is frail now, but she has all her mentality capacity / Source quoted here (https://www.ladepeche.fr/2023/10/04/bernadette-chirac-handicapee-et-amaigrie-isolee-que-devient-lancienne-premiere-dame-11496252.php)

Delon, he is frail but not near death door, I think it will be a hit in 2025, He will reach 89 but definitely not 90 !

- André Chandernagor is very frail, moves in wheelchair, will turn 103 in September, definitely a hit to come for this year !

- Roland Dumas, since Micheline Presle and him are born one day apart the same month, the same year, there is great chance that he will follow her these year, like Milan Kundera born the same day as Marcel Amont, and died 4 month after these latter in 2023. It's destiny ! Roland Dumas is not as frail as André Chandernagor is tough.

- Jean-Marie Le Pen, many hospitalisations since 2022, no more videos on his Youtube Channel, and since Delors and Badinter are now dead, he is one of last famous nonagerian French politicians alive today, he is frail now as he is not quite understandable when he speaks. I think he will pass away around autumn or december these year !

- Bouvard is old and retired from TV since many years now, to watch closely.

- Cheng not seen in medias since pre-Covid time, no news about him since a long time, to watch closely, I sense his death is near to come !

- Bietry, ALS disease at a stage very advanced, near death door, definitely a hit to come !

- Raphael Geminiani almost centenarian, don't know very well his health condition, to watch closely !

- Geneviève Page  (unseen in medias from a decade, maybe much longer) she is the same age as my great-aunt is, both are widowed since many years, Page lost her husband in 2011, quite a long time, and my great-aunt lost her husband in 2013 and she is not very well now as she approaches 97 next November. Geneviève Page might be in the same condition, I sense a hit to come !

Pom-pom-pid-out !

Marie France Garaud, advocate and french politician has died aged 90 to provide our list with a second may hit. Garaud was born in 1934 in Poitiers were she first worked as an advocate in the 1950's. Her political career began when her law teacher who was appointed minister under Charles de Gaulle, chose her as a part of his cabinet. She made friend with Simone Veil and then followed Georges Pompidou and helped him prepare his candidacy for the French presidency. After his election, Garaud worked as a private consultant for Pompidou, being one of the most influential women of the Elysee. In 1972, her and Pierre Julliet, another consultant of Pompidou, persuaded him to fire Jacques Chaban Delmas (at-the-time Prime Minister), one of Garaud's numerous coup d'éclat. In 1973, the American magazine Newsweek even presented her as the most powerful woman in France and Pompidou was said to be so irritated by her power that he removed her from his cabinet by appointing her at the Cour des Comptes. After that, she moved on to become one of the most influential support of Jacques Chirac, acting, again as an éminence grise during his campaign for presidency and his whole mandate. After being evicted of Chirac's circle thanks to the intervention of Bernadette Chirac, Garaud stated "I thought Jacques Chirac was made of the marble that statues are made of, but he's actually made of the earthenware of bidets". Afterwards, she ran in the 1981 presidential election but ended up second to last in the poll. During her career, she embodied the conservative part of the Republican right, opposing the abolition of the death penalty and expressing reservations about the legalization of abortion. In her later years, Garaud suffered from supposed Alzheimer as it was revealed in 2020 when a call for witnesses was launched after her disappearance from her Castle. She thus was duly selected this year at number 28 on our list, becoming one of the most promising candidate. We made no mistake as Garaud already scores the eleventh hit this year. We hope the following months continue to be as productive !
