Life Begins at 5 o'clock 7 Posted February 13, 2006 I get the feeling Charles will bow out before Elizabeth. He just doesn't seem as hardy. Plus, haven't a number of the men in his family died of cancer comparatively young?
Lady Die 63 Posted February 13, 2006 I get the feeling Charles will bow out before Elizabeth. He just doesn't seem as hardy. Plus, haven't a number of the men in his family died of cancer comparatively young? I suspect they were all smokers. Chas doesn't smoke but he must breathe in lots of Cami's. Life Begins at 5 o'clock 7 Posted February 13, 2006 For some reason this has inspired some monarch related questions for the general group: Do you know the average lifespan of a British monarch? How does it compare with the lifespan of other monarchs? And final question, on average which group tends to live longer, British Monarchs or American Presidents?
Windsor 2,233 Posted February 13, 2006 Indeed, King George VI and the Duke of Windsor died young due to cancers brought on by excessive smoking. On the other hand Queen Victoria lived to 81 in 1901, Queen Mary till her mid eighties in the 1950s and ofcourse the late Queen Mother lived until 101. She only gave up smoking aged 100 for health reasons. His parents are also doing not to bad with the Queen and Duke turning 80 and 85 respectively in 2006. So going by genes, he still has some time left in him yet. I don't know what the average life expectancy of a monarch is. Queen Victoria is the oldest British Monarch on record aged 81. But that was over 100 years ago.
Life Begins at 5 o'clock 7 Posted February 13, 2006 Still though, I think he's going to be one of those people who die before their parents. Based on her mother's performance, I think QEII is going to live into her 100s. The Windsor women have a hardy track record which the men haven't matched. I still give him two decades or more, but it's still not going to be enough to outlive his mother.
Windsor 2,233 Posted February 13, 2006 Can we the mods please rename this thread 'Queen Elizabeth II' The 'QEII' is annoying me. Thanks
Dr Hackenslash 25 Posted February 13, 2006 The Duke of Windsor lived until he was 77 - just short of his 78th birthday (1894-1972) so he exceeded the average male age at death. That's hardly young, compared to King G.G.G.George VI, or many of his former subjects.
Life Begins at 5 o'clock 7 Posted February 13, 2006 He was probably aided by the best possibly medical care throughout his life. Perhaps Queen Elizabeth is to be a supercenturian, 118 years old, something like that. Setting aside monarchs who abdicated (for love, or to avoid being killed by an aggressive relative), have any monarchs simply retired?

She abdicated in favour of Juliana in 1947/8 having been Queen since 1890.
