Derby Dead Pool 2007

Recommended Posts

I can't remember exactly who I picked, I submitted my team on Dec 14th (I'm a bit obsessive about getting homework in early.) Nick Du Toit is in the team again, but not as my joker, I do hope is isn't a unique pick.

I didn't choose Jo5ie Gr0ve, Saddam was my substititute and Barzan is already on my CPDP team, so I didn't bother picking him again. Picks 18,19 and 20 MAY get me a grand total of 44 points when they are shot at dawn one fine Indonesian morning. :)

I did pick Jo5ie Gr0ve but not as my joker.

Didn't pick Sharon or Castro, but did pick those same Indonesian chaps as you DDT.

Good thinking Tempus, I picked one as my joker. I was rather hoping they'd be unique picks...

I may as well revoke my team now.

If I knew we were playing execution watch, I would have been in with a chance...

Steve Jobs

A fine, if conservative list. I completely missed Steve Jobs as a possible pick.

some interesting picks here.....(and a few I need to go and look up ! )

Not sure about Korchnoi....I think he has been inactive (chess-wise ) for a couple of years...but I doubt if thats anything to worry about ...unless you have heard something ?

I obviously hope to get a few unique picks. Mulisch is a gamble. I like to stick a Dutch pick on my list and the Dutch royals are disgustingly healthy. He's a Dutch author, possibly the best known abroad among the living, but I know of no health problems and even if he drops an obit might not come.

Korchnoi: gut feeling rather than knowledge. He's retired and he's about the most fanatic chess player I know. Inactivity can't do him good. I do remember a remark on a newsgroup that his health was not as good as it used to be. It was unsourced, so it may well be a rumour.

I wonder if Girija Prasad Koirala will work.

Hein

Just been to look up Mehmed Uzun, how bad is his cancer? Wiki doesn''t say.

Just found the answer given 6 months to live back in May, so on borrowed time already.

Will he get a UK obit, probably if only from The Guardian.

He has previously been mentioned on the BBC website as well, so I am sure that he will get a UK obit.

I was going to have Yahweh Ben Yahweh, but I think he'll struggle to get a UK obit as I can't find any mention of him by the BBC or a UK newspaper.

With 400 teams when - roughly - does this massive updated site go live?

Thus spake Windsor (who has just scored 5 DDP points with the execution of Saddam Hussain :) )

Indeed.

When I chose Saddam Hussein back in 2005, we did not know how long the trial would last, there was no known sentence, and no given date or span of execution.

As it happens, he was only just executed in 2006 thus it was a gamble.

My other argument would be that Saddam Hussein is at least going to be noted in history. Not just a footnote like those who will meet their maker in 2007.

Thridly, I'm a bad loser.

I thought Janez Drnovsek would be unique pick for me but turns out everybody knows he has cancer.

I think he will survive 2007, I just wanted a Unique pick. I thought I had one with Bruce Shand last year but no...

Happy New Year all! Thanks for all the DDP2007 entries - we've received about 450, and have processed just over a third of those so far, slowed down of course by most people needing to amend their teams at the last minute as a result of Saddam's demise.

The current plan is to bung up on the website in the next couple of days what we've got so far, and keep updating it as we process more teams. In the meantime, if you can't remember who you picked, post your team name up here and I'll list it for you. My 20 are as follows:

1) Awad Hamed al-Bandar

2) Muhammad Ali

3) Henry Allingham

4) Barzan Ibrahim al-Tikriti (JOKER)

5) Tammy Faye Bakker Messner

6) Fidel Castro

7) Carlo Azeglio Ciampi

8) Louis Farrakhan

9) Farrah Fawcett

10) John Forsythe

11) Estelle Getty

12) Rev Billy Graham

13) King Harald V of Norway

14) Tony Hart

15) George Melly

16) Emiliano Mercado del Toro

17) Ariel Sharon

18) Suharto

19) Brian Wilson

20) Amy Winehouse
