Ronald Coase For 2008?

Recommended Posts

Ronald Coase who won the Nobel Prize for Economics in 1991, will turn 97 in a few days. I've recognized that Deathlist is out of Economists and if Coase makes the 2008 list - for some reason I think we will be in the same situation again soon.

I say no. Just an old guy with no known health problems. He's 97, so he could go tomorrow or live another 5 years. He's also boring as hell, which means his thread will consist entirely of "Why is this guy on the death list? He's just old, nothing more, and boring to boot. Wah wah wah." Let's spare us that, shall we?

Exactly, if he was 10 or even 5 years younger you wouldn't have even thought of suggesting him.

While I wouldn't quibble with the age argument I don't agree that he's as "boring as hell". Coase's theory on transaction costs determining the size of companies was way ahead of its time and very pertinent to the way companies do business on the internet.

Aye given the number of people forced to study something he developed by way of theory we'd probably have a marginally livlier thread than we managed for some this year. Deffo more action than Cliff Mitchelmore.

And here one that doesn't need subscribtions.

BTW, that ft article has a rather curious headline: "Ronald Coase: Nobel Prize winner who explored why companies exist". One would expect that to be the Nobel Prize for the Bleeding Obvious.

regards,

Hein
