themaninblack 2,112 Posted January 20, 2009 I thought I'd start a thread focusing on anniversaries of famous deaths, the most famous of which in Deathlist is of course 29th November 1986 - Cary Grant. This is a bit late but I thought I'd get the ball rolling with the anniversary of the death of Carry On actor Peter Butterworth, who died on 16th January 1979, making Janet Brown a widow in the process...
Handrejka 1,904 Posted January 20, 2009 Anniversay of Audry Hepburn's death today. I know I'm in a minority of one but I never cared for her. I don't understand how someone with an annoying voice, a face like a clown fish and the body of a famine victim is such an icon. It also woudl have been my nan's 99th birthday today had she not died at age 91.

She was great in Breakfast at Tiffany's, Charade and that one where she was blind. But she should never had been Eliza Doolittle..

Possibly the greatest day in English history. The Scots and Irish were not too thrilled with the guy. Anubis the Jackal 77 Posted January 30, 2009 Or...defended the bravest social revolution to date against mercenaries paid by reactionaries. Anyway, James I (or VI) was ruler of Scotland, England and Ireland, so invasion is far too harsh a word. He kind of invaded both nations, killing a lot of people... The only constitutional link between the Kingdoms at that point was the crown. Where the independent country of England allowed for Cromwell to become Head of State, the Scots chose to retain the monarchy under Charles II. Thus in the aftermath of 1649, Scotland and England - without the bond of monarchy - were two completely separate entities. So invasion would be the correct term. Cromwell eventually forced a Union in 1654 through conquest which was subsequently dismantled with the Restoration. (Of course I have forgotten who threw the first stone. Can't remember if the Scots started on the English, or vice versa. There was widespead horror in Scotland when news came back that 'the English' had beheaded a Scottish monarch (again) (odd in itself because they hated hi, and it was the Scots forces who handed Charles over to be tried)).
Anubis the Jackal 77 Posted January 30, 2009 "The Scots...?" What all of them, or just those few who were fortunate enough to be granted titles by the Monarch? Where the independent country of England allowed for Cromwell to become Head of State, the Scots chose to retain the monarchy under Charles II.
