While driving under the influence of alcohol, abstract expressionist Jackson Pollock died in a car crash on August 11, 1956 and also killed one of his passengers.

I can’t stand his painting style.

Also, mediocre professional wrestler Lance Cade tapped out today in 2010 at the age of 29. He is thus one of only three wrestlers to have made their PPV debut this millennium to have died (the others being The Wall and Umaga).

Terrible wrestler, but man he squandered his potential. As a little 'un in the early 90s I thought he was going to be the next big thing. But then, you know, lack of self-motivation + Vince seeing dollar signs in Kevin Nash basically fucked him up. Kronik also clearly one of the worst tag teams of all time.

Whoops, I almost forgot to post this (it still is 14th August here, just about).

25 years ago, on August 14th 1988, Enzo Ferrari, founder of Ferrari, died at the age of 90, in Maranello, Italy.

enzo_630x.jpg

112_0808_10z%2Benzo_ferrari%2Bportrait.jpg

Before he died, he signed Nigel Mansell up to the Ferrari F1 team for the 1989 season onwards. Mansell was the last driver to be hand-picked by Enzo himself.

Then a few weeks later at the Italian Grand Prix, Ferrari's home race, a small miracle occurred when both of the McLaren cars, which had utterly dominated the season, somehow both managed to drop out of the race. Alain Prost had a rare engine failure and Ayrton Senna got bumped out of the race by hapless backmarker Jean-Louis Schlesser, who was only in the race in the first place becuase he was a temporary replacement for Mansell (driving for Williams) who had a very bad case of chickenpox (yes, really). The two Ferraris inherited 1st and 2nd places, when they had been nowhere near a race-win all season. Indeed, by the end of the season McLaren had won 15 out of the 16 races and the Italian GP ended up being Ferrari's only win that year. Surely even the least superstitious people would get a smile out of that turn of events.

Belgian surrealist artist René Magritte died on August 15, 1967 at age 68. His work challenges observers’ preconditioned perceptions of reality.

Probably his most famous picture has to be this one: Ceci n’est pas une pipe
