Credited with coining the term 'documentary', and considered the father of British and Canadian documentaries, the Grierson awards are named in his honour. Despite there being more than a quarter of a century age difference, Matthews and Ritchie played alongside each other at Stoke. Like Ritchie, Matthews also had two separate spells at Stoke.
