- She also made appearances in movies that included the 1973 version of A Doll's House and The 14; the latter of which she starred in with June Brown.

- Wing was best known as Lou Beale in EastEnders. She played her from the first episode in 1985 until 1988, when her character would be killed off.

- Among her last roles were appearances in 2004's The Calcium Kid, 2007's Son of Rambow, and a 2009 short film in which she portrayed an elderly Alzheimer's victim.

A pamphleteer poet, his poetry helped to create the revolutionary environment that led to the establishment of the Republic. Between 1911 and 1914, he was the Portuguese ambassador to Switzerland.

MC Daleste was born in São Paulo, died murdered in Paulínia at the age of 20 10 years ago, he was a funk singer, On the night of July 6, 2013, a Saturday, Daleste was hit by two gunshots while performing a show in the São Paulo city of Campinas. One of the projectiles passed close to the left arm and the other hit below the chest. According to an autopsy, there were three shots. Death was confirmed early the next day at the Municipal Hospital of Paulínia.

Ernest Borgnine died on this day 11 years ago, aged 95.

- After graduating from high school in 1935, Borgnine joined the US Navy, and was honorably discharged in October of 1941. After Pearl Harbor, he reenlisted, and served until the end of World War II, where he would again receive an honorable discharge.

- Having no idea what career to pursue after that, Borgnine's mother encouraged him to take up acting. His first role was in a 1947 production of State of the Union.

- In 1951, Borgnine made the jump to TV, starring as a villain in the show Captain Video and His Video Rangers. A casting agent for Columbia Pictures saw him, and he soon made his film debut in The Whistle at Eaton Falls. In 1955, he would star in Marty, for which he would win an Oscar for Best Actor.

- Borgnine would return to television, taking the title role of McHale's Navy in 1962. In the 1980s, he would also star in Airwolf opposite Jan-Michael Vincent.

- To younger audiences, Borgnine is best known as the voice of Mermaid Man in SpongeBob. His sidekick Barnacle Boy was voiced by his McHale's Navy co-star Tim Conway:

After his death, Nickelodeon reran every episode he guest starred in.

- In 2009, Borgnine would be nominated for an Emmy for his role in the final episode of ER- aged 92 at the time, he is among the oldest people to receive an Emmy nomination.

Fernão Mendes Pinto was a Portuguese slave, merchant, pirate, corsair, Jesuit, missionary, adventurer and explorer. He was born in Montemor-o-Velho and died in Pragal, also in Portugal, 440 years ago, he was one of the first Portuguese to arriving in Japan,The arrival of the Portuguese in Japan was highly celebrated, and still lingers in Japanese cultural memory, because it was the episode that allowed the introduction of firearms in that country. Fernão Mendes Pinto himself fits into this role, describing the astonishment and interest of the said local king (actually a daimyo) when he saw one of his companions fire a shotgun while hunting.

Pope Gregory XV died 400 years ago, born in Bologna, died in Rome aged 69, had been elected 2 years earlier. diarrhea and a stomach upset that caused him great discomfort. His condition took a turn for the worse on 4 July, when a fever severely weakened him, prompting him to receive Viaticum on 5 July and Extreme Unction on 6 July, before succumbing to the illness two days later.

It's 32 years since the death of musician, composer and bandleader Geoff Love. 

The son of entertainers, he learnt the trombone as a schoolboy, and later, during service in the army, learnt musical arrangement. He arranged for many artists post-war, and was backing musician on a number of hits, including for Peter & Gordan, spending around three decades at Abbey Road Studios, playing for artists as diverse as Mrs. Mills and Norman Wisdom, to Shirley Bassey and Paul Robeson.

He was also recording under the name "Manuel & the Music of the Mountains",  a persona which spawned 4 chart successes between 1959 and 1976, the last being his biggest hit, Rodrigo's Guitar Concerto De Aranjuez, which reached number 3 in the UK (it was actually declared number 1 initially, but this was withdrawn 4 hours later owing to 'compilation errors' (The Four Seasons, with December '63, was number one, if you were wondering).

 

He composed the theme tune to Sid James vehicle Bless This House, and his recording of Tico's Tune was used as the theme music to both The Gay Byrne Show and Moone Boy. He also had a long association with Max Bygraves, appearing in many of Bygraves' TV shows as musical director. He was also the father of radio DJ Adrian Love (1944-1999)

Korean politician and the founder of North Korea Kim II Sung died on this day 29 years ago, aged 82. Under his leadership, North Korea was established as a totalitarian socialist personalist dictatorship, with a centrally planned economy. It had close political economic relations with the Soviet Union. By the late 1960s and 1970s, North Korea enjoyed a higher standard of living than the South, which was suffering from political chaos and economic crises. The situation was reversed in the 1980s, as a newly stable South Korea became an economic powerhouse which was fueled by Japanese and American investment, military aid and internal economic development, while North Korea stagnated and then declined during the same period. Differences emerged between North Korea and the Soviet Union; chief among them was Kim II Sung's philosophy of Juche, which focused on Korean nationalism, self-reliance and socialism. Despite this, the country received funds, subsidies and aid from the USSR and the Eastern Bloc until the dissolution of the USSR in 1991. The resulting loss of economic aid adversely affected the North's economy, contributing to widespread famine in 1994.

Emperor Anastasius I died on this day 1505 years ago, aged 88.

- Anastasius had heterochromia; one of his eyes was blue, while the other was black. For this reason, he is often given the epithet "Dicorus" (two-pupiled).

- After Emperor Zeno died in 491, the general populace of the Eastern Roman Empire wanted an emperor who was an Orthodox Christian. Zeno's widow Ariadne handpicked him as his successor, over her brother-in-law Longinus. Ariadne would marry Anastasius shortly after his accession.

- Longinus would then begin a revolt against Anastasius, initiating the Isaurian War in 492. Anastasius would successfully put down the rebellion by 498, partly helped by Hun mercenaries.

- Anastasius' reign was known for its lowering of taxes, a war against Persia from 502 to 505, and his personal deposition of the patriarch of Chalcedon in 512 due to his conflicting theological beliefs.

- Anastasius died of extreme age (considering the life expectancy in 500 was about 35), and had no children to pass the crown to. Justin (I), the chief of his guards, would be elected the new Byzantine Emperor.

12th President of the United States Zachary Taylor died on this day 173 years ago, aged 65. Taylor was a career officer in the United States Army, rising to the rank of major general and becoming a national hero for his victories in the Mexican-American War. Taylor became the first president to be elected without having previously held political office. As President, he kept his distance from Congress and his Cabinet, even though partisan tensions threatened to divide the Union. Debate over the status of slavery in the Mexican Cession dominated the national political agenda and led to threats of secession from Southerners. Despite being a Southerner and a slaveholder himself, Taylor did not push for the expansion of slavery, and sought sectional harmony above all other concerns. To avoid the issue of slavery, he urged settlers in New Mexico and California to bypass the territorial stage and draft constitutions for statehood, setting up he stage for the Compromise of 1850.

Mel Blanc died on this day 34 years ago, aged 81.

- Blanc got his start in radio in 1927, and was particularly known for roles on The Jack Benny Program.

- In 1936, Blanc would join Leon Schlesinger Productions (soon to be folded into Warner Bros. Animation) as a voice actor, and would become the second voice of Porky Pig the following year. In the same short he debuted as Porky's voice, Daffy Duck also made his first appearance, and he would also be voiced by Blanc. Bugs Bunny made his debut in 1940, and Blanc would voice Bugs up to his cameo in Who Framed Roger Rabbit? in 1988.

- Blanc was initially cast as Gideon the cat in Disney's Pinocchio, but the character would eventually be made mute. However, a hiccup Blanc provided would be used three times in the finished movie.

- Blanc voiced Woody Woodpecker in his first three cartoons, and created his iconic laugh.

- During World War II, Blanc would often lend his voice to wartime propaganda cartoons, which included the Private Snafu series produced by the US Army:

- After the expiration of his contract with Warner Bros. Blanc would often voice characters in Hanna-Barbera cartoons- most notably Barney and Dino in The Flintstones, Secret Squirrel, and Mr. Spacely in The Jetsons; the latter would be his final voice acting role for 1990's Jetsons: The Movie.

- Blanc was in a serious car crash in 1961 which left him comatose- his doctors slowly brought him out of it by addressing his characters while he was unconscious, and Blanc responded in-character in a weak voice. Daws Butler voiced Barney Rubble during Blanc's absence, and Warner Bros. wanted Stan Freberg to voice Bugs- Freberg declined out of respect for Blanc.

- Blanc's last words were telling his son Noel that he loved him- in Yosemite Sam's voice. Engraved on his tombstone is Porky Pig's most famous quote:

Manuel Vasques died 20 years ago, the Portuguese de Barreiro was a footballer and was part of the football squad of Sporting Clube de Portugal in the 1940s and 1950s, and was one of the members of the so-called "Five Violins". He died aged 77.

English footballer and manager who played as a defender Jack Charlton died on this day 3 years ago, aged 85. He was part of the England national team that won the 1966 World Cup and managed the Republic of Ireland national team from 1986 to 1996 achieving two World Cup and one European Championship appearances. He spent his entire club career with Leeds United from 1950 to 1973, helping the club to the Second Division title (1963-64), First Division title (1968-69), FA Cup (1972), League Cup (1968), Charity Shield (1969), Inter-Cities Fairs Cup (1968 and 1971), as well as one other promotion from the Second Division (1955-56) and five second-place finishes in the First Division, two FA Cup final defeats and one inter-Cities Fairs Cup final defeat. His 629 league and 762 total competitive appearances are club records.

Satoru Iwata died on this day 8 years ago, aged 55.

- Iwata joined HAL Laboratory in 1982; his family disapproved. In 1983, Iwata went to Nintendo's headquarters to get permission for HAL to develop games for the Famicom (NES).

- While at HAL, Iwata would program Balloon Fight and the first Kirby game, and produced Earthbound (Mother in Japan).

- Before joining Nintendo, Iwata would also work at Game Freak, helping with programming on the second generation of Pokémon games (Gold and Silver) and the Nintendo 64's Pokemon Stadium.

- The first in-house Nintendo game Iwata worked on would be the first Super Smash Bros. in 1999.

- Iwata would officially join Nintendo in 2000, and reduced the cost and time of making games while maintaining their quality. In 2002, he would succeed Hiroshi Yamauchi to become the company's fourth president.

- Iwata would seek to compete against Sony and Microsoft not by focusing on gamer demographics, but through innovative consoles. This led to the creation of the DS (seen in the picture) and Wii in 2004 and 2006, which are among the best-selling video game consoles of all time. Later consoles during his tenure (specifically the 3DS and Wii U), however, would see less of a profit. The final console Iwata would help develop would be the Switch, released after his death and would see similar success to the former two consoles.

- Iwata would also create the Nintendo Direct presentations for upcoming products, which began in 2011. He would often employ humorous skits within them:

- Iwata was diagnosed with bile duct cancer in 2014, and died after a year-long battle. A rainbow was seen over Nintendo's HQ soon after his death was announced, and the Internet dubbed it "The Rainbow Road to Heaven" (after the (in)famous Mario Kart track):

Otto I of Bavaria was born in Kelheim and died 840 years ago in Pfullendorf, he was Duke of Bavaria from 1180 until his death, and the first of his house to take possession of that title

Yagan died 190 years ago in Perth, was an Australian Aboriginal warrior of the Noongar tribe who played an important role in Indigenous Australian resistance to British settlements and ruled the Perth area, led a series of robberies and looting across the country, in which white settlers were dead, the government having offered a reward for their capture, dead or alive, the colonists removed Yagan's head to claim the bounty, which an officer later took to London where it was displayed as an "anthropological curiosity". A museum kept the head in storage for more than a century before interring it with other remains in an unmarked grave in Liverpool in 1964,Over the years, the Noongar people have requested the repatriation of the head, both for religious and for the importance of Yagan in the culture. In 1993 the site of the grave was identified and four years later officials exhumed the head and repatriated it to Australia. Since 1997, Aboriginal people in the Perth area have debated how to treat Yagan's head respectfully. They finally buried her in July 2010, in a traditional Noongar ceremony in Western Australia's Swan Valley, 177 years after Yagan's death.

English actor and director who, along with his contemporaries Ralph Richardson and John Gielgud was one of a trio of male actors who dominated the British stage of the mid-20th century Laurence Olivier died on this day 34 years ago, aged 82. In 1930 he had his first important West End success in Noël Coward's Private Lives, and he appeared in his first film. In 1935 he played in a celebrated production of Romeo and Juliet alongside Gielgud and Peggy Ashcroft, and by the end of the decade he was an established star. In the 1940s, together with Richardson and John Burrell, Olivier was the co-director of the Old Vic, building it into a highly respected company. There his most celebrated roles included Shakespeare's Richard III and Sophocles's Oedipus. In the 1950s Olivier was an independent actor-manager, but his stage career was in the doldrums until he joined the avant-garde English Stage Company in 1957 to play the title role in The Entertainer, a part he later played on film. From 1963 to 1973 he was the founding director of Britain's National Theatre, running a resident company that fostered many future stars. His own parts there included the title role in Othello (1965) and Shylock in The Merchant of Venice (1970).

She appeared in many TV roles throughout the 70s and into the 80s, including staples Emmerdale & Coronation Street, but her most famous role was probably in Jack Rosenthal's Play for Today, Spend, Spend, Spend, where she portrayed pools winner Viv Nicholson, for which she was nominated for a BAFTA.

She died of cancer, aged 34.

Joanna Cole died on this day 3 years ago, aged 75.

- Before writing books, Cole was an elementary school librarian.

- Cole's first book was a children's book about cockroaches that was published in 1971- as a kid, she enjoyed watching bugs in her yard, and often read a book called Bugs, Insects and Such.

- In the early 1980s, Cole would create children's book series such as The Clown-Arounds (about a family of circus clowns) and Monster (about a family of rude monsters).

- In 1986, Cole wrote the first book in The Magic School Bus series- The Magic School Bus at the Waterworks, educating kids about the water cycle. She made 13 books in the series, discussing other scientific topics such as the layers of the Earth, the human digestive tract, and the planets of the solar system. In 1994, the books were adapted into an animated series (that many 90s kids and people whose teachers showed them episodes of it in school remember fondly):

The books would also be adapted into PC edutainment games between 1994 and 2010.

- Outside of children's literature, Cole also wrote Asking About Sex and Growing Up in 1988- this book has been challenged by many communities.
