Magere Hein 1,400 Posted July 25, 2011 Too bad I wasn't aware of this great (...) Beatles cover until a few days before his death... http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Ykm1KWTfObE (i've seen him performing in the Heineken Music Hall, which was quite intriguing. The late Arne Jansen sang as well) Ah, yes, I remember that song. It's a take on Jelle Zijlstra, Prime Minister 22 November 1966 – 5 April 1967, but best known as Finance Minister and later president of De Nederlandsche Bank, the Netherlands' central bank. His signature was printed on most of the guilder notes I've used in my life. Arne Jansen was a bit of a one-hit wonder, which may not be such a Bad Thing. In other news: Dutch actress Ina van Faassen died last Saturday, the reports of her death buried by the sordid unpleasantness in a country well known for its parrots. regards, Hein
TAFKAG 70 Posted September 30, 2011 The recent death of Gerard Reve made me think about a few other Dutch authors who are getting on a bit: Remco Campert b. July 29, 1929 Hella Haasse b. February 2, 1918 Harry Mulisch b. July 29, 1927 Cees Nooteboom b. July 31, 1933 Jan Wolkers b. October 26, 1925 I wonder if any of them would pass the Famousness Test. regards, Hein Hella Haasse has died, no English report yet as far as I can see. Magere Hein 1,400 Posted November 2, 2011 It's hard to predict that with Dutch celebs. Talking about Dutch celebs how's Teddy Scholten these days? She must be about 80 now. Not sure they'd get a UK obit, though she might do as she pipped Pearl Carr and Teddy Johnson to the post and won the Eurovision Song Contest in 1959 (still one of the UK's most famous entries even after 47 years!) Got some ideas. Rijk de Gooyer. Actor, and well in his eighties. Dead, from pancreatic cancer, at 85. regards, Hein
Magere Hein 1,400 Posted December 7, 2011 Video footage of Tanja shot before the Mono Jojoy-attacks. Miss Nijmeijer is very much alive, and still playing at soldier. Dutch broadcaster NOS recentely interviewed her. Her Dutch has suffered a tad, it has a remarkable Spanish sound. Here's a clip. She says: "Als je hier in de jungle zit en je hoort continu bombardementen en je hoort continu geweren; de enige reactie die je als guerrillera hebt, is schieten", which translates to: "When you're sitting in the jungle and continuously hear bombardments and rifle fire, the only reaction for a guerrillera is to shoot." regards, Hein
Magere Hein 1,400 Posted December 27, 2011 Dutch party pooper TV presenter Joop Koopman died on Xmas day. He died from Parkinson's disease and related health problems. He was 81. His death will, I suppose, not be reported in English language media. Here's a link to an obit in Dutch on the Radio Nederland Wereldomroep website. regards, Hein
Magere Hein 1,400 Posted January 2, 2012 Here's a little quiz: does the name Willem Holleeder mean anything to you? He's a criminal, born 29 May 1958, best know for kidnapping Freddy Heineken in 1983 and currently serving a 9 year prison sentence for extortion and causing GBH in unrelated cases. In the last few years he's had a few health scares (including a heart condition and kidney failure) and he made several enemies by ratting in court. He's soon to be released, which may affect his chances of survival negatively. I didn't know that, so I didn't put him in my DDP Theme team. My question is: is he UK obit material? regards, Hein
Magere Hein 1,400 Posted January 17, 2012 Dutch actor Piet Römer died today, aged 83. I knew he was unwell, but I don't expect his death to be reported abroad, so he was not in my DDP Theme Team. The picture shows mr Römer as police inspector De Cock in Dutch TV detective series Baantjer, after novels by Appie Baantjer, who died in August 2010. regards, Hein
VSBfromH 74 Posted January 17, 2012 Gustav Leonhardt After announcing his retirement from performing due to ill health last month, the Dutch harpsichordist and conductor has died aged 83. My first hit on this year's DDP when the official obit appears. Amazing that last year my only 3 hits were Nat Lofthouse, Ted Lowe and Sidney Lumet. Maybe I should have chosen a whole team of Ls! Magere Hein 1,400 Posted January 19, 2012 Dutch ballet dancer and choreographer Rudi van Dantzig died today, aged 78. Ballet is an art form for which I care not, but his death is quite a big thing in the Netherlands. regards, Hein

Magere Hein 1,400 Posted April 21, 2012 After a long and agonising illness, but still unexpectedly, the Dutch government died last night. With a bit of luck this'll be the last we hear of this dweeb: He's well under the publicity radar, to date. The next few months and polls will be interesting, with neo-fascist populist Wilders expected to take some 20% of the vote. Which also proved true, times were. And lousy. Neo-fascist populist Wilders managed to become the plumber in the Rutte cabinet. Life has not improved under those right-wing bastards, but it seems that Wilders has pulled the plug. They haven't resigned yet, but that's expected soon. regards, Hein

Magere Hein 1,400 Posted May 1, 2012 I just learned that Jérôme Heldring, a Dutch journalist and former editor of NRC Handelsblad has quit writing his regular columns in that newpaper. He's a right-wing old fart, but a right-wing old fart with class. His clear thinking and impeccable Dutch have been an example for many, although too few in my view. Anyway, at 94 he's due to go soon, and this might be the first herald, so to speak. His being a journo of a respected paper might get his death a line or two in the UK press. Or maybe not. Edit to add: Two more respected Dutch journos who are getting on a bit: Henk Hofland (b. 1927) and André Spoor (b. 1931). Hofland's very well and active, but Spoor has vanished from public life, not even a Dutch Wikipedia entry. There is a German one, though. I understand he has retired to Ommen, a small town in the far eastOverijssel. regards, Hein

Magere Hein 1,400 Posted July 6, 2012 Dutch poet and author Gerrit Komrij died yesterday, aged 68. It's quite a shock, especially since I completely missed that he was ill. Here's a sample of his work: Het Onzichtbare Labyrint The Invisible Labyrinth Er is geen vrijheid in de zandwoestijn, There is no freedom in the desert sands, al staan er nergens hekken, nergens palen. Despite the fact there are no stakes or fences. Het is maar beter - als je vrij wilt zijn - If to be free’s your aim, then your best chance om sierlijk door een labyrint te dwalen. Is stylish roaming through a maze of trenches. Je stoot dan op veel dwang, in gang na gang, Along each path you take you’ll meet with much maar loopt de kans ook niet ten prooi te vallen Coercion, but so doing won’t fall prey to aan plompe hekkenslopers, met hun drang Gauche demolishers of fences, to such naar één cachot, één helse cel voor allen. As seek one hellish jail all are conveyed to. Ze zien je niet. Je zit heel fraai gevangen. They fail to see you in your clever lair. Laat anderen gerust door ruimten razen, Let others rush around in space unbounded, woestijnen scheppen, in hun fél verlangen Creating deserts, in their wild desire naar vrijheid, laat ze volkeren verbazen For freedom, and let nations be dumbfounded met internationale strijdgezangen. By international anthems, hymns and airs. Er is, dacht ik, geen hoop voor zulke dwazen. For fools like that, I thought, all hope’s unfounded.
