Lower Age Limit For Forum Membership

Recommended Posts

Seriously, we need to have a good look at some sort of age limit for this place ( yeah this thread may not be the place to discuss it) its not on having kids posting here.

This is an adult forum for grown ups and twats like me, its not a place for under 18s.

Honestly, Ive been to DL cons and ive really enjoyed meeting some of you but, hand on heart, Id have been less than happy to be in a boozer with members younger than my kids. I think other DL ers would have thought the same TBH.

This forum isn't and shouldn't be any different, should it.

These days most boozers are going to have people younger than your kids in them as the under 18 rule got banned years ago. I joined when I was 17, is that too young - I was old enough to legally smoke, have consensual sex, join the army and earn my own wages at the time - only two of which I actually did and one of them not very often. Personally I reckon 16's a fair age limit - anyone over sixteens going to have heard worse than they'll ever find on this site from colleagues, family members, friends etc.

The likes of MK and this new kid I have an issue with - there still at school. If it was just a forum then there'd be an argument that tighter moderation would be accommodating of them but there's a chat room as well; do we really want the potential headlines for this site that could happen if those kids are using that chat room unsupervised.

your argument would work is the chat room was active, its dead no one even goes on there regularly.

Several good points were raised in the last few posts, the ones about chat in particular.

I don't particularly care about the age of forum users, I believe normal moderation can take care of bad boys and girls. Perhaps that's a naive notion.

Chat is a different matter, though. From an incident in chat earlier today I learned that chat is logged and that those logs are visible to admins. This means that claims of abuse of chat can be investigated, but not immediately.

This subject needs some more thought and discussion. Assuming LFN won't mind I split this topic from Room 101.

How would you do it?

You can't.

So why bother?

Hell, I would've loved this place when I was 12 or 13. I would even have traded some of my Sven Hassell collection back then (Wheels of Terror - turned into a shit movie, and Der Kommisar - shark jumped by then) to discuss Lennon getting papped.

Now I know that chat is logged, I may just go on now and again and go "a/s/l?" over and over :D It's not as if it's Zello where it is a vocal chat room and you can record it (works well on my wee fitba forum, would work well here too I think).

Age, shouldn't come into it. I was faaar more strident in my views at 12 than the mellowed out version that posts on here 35 years later.

I welcome the little tykes, but reserve the right to crack Saville jokes if they get all Miley Cyrus on us. Then by all means punt the cunts, but as shit posters and not age related.

And for the love of God don't let any inbred bring up a swear filter. I don't think there is one created that cannot be easily circumvented.

There's that. I have no way of knowing ages, Besides:, If an underage wants to pose as an adult s/he can. I'll treat them as such.

Don't worry about the swear filter. I now abuse it so that it replaces the names of advertised pharmaceuticals by the name of a well-known canned meat product. It seems the good guys are currently on top in the guerrila war against spammers, so I may just as well disable it.

Honestly I think age shouldn't really matter because it's words on text if a changed my age to 18 and still said the same thing what would be different.

There is, but it got taken down a few years back. It was decided that, as this forum consists mainly of adults, to take it down.

You can If they actually admit to being 14 or whatever.

No, you cannot Police the forum and, to be fair to all, if the mods/admins still allow that vile cuntbucket to post on here then I don't expect too much proactive action in keeping kids off the forum.

Im not being critical of the way the place is moderated at all, the place works better lightly moderated but........

the swear filter is the dumbest thing ever, even if people under 18 are here I wouldn't put it back. In here swears are just lines of text.

The main issue here is the buggers are only as old as they say they are as far as the site's concened. I know I pretended to be older than 13 to be able to use proboards hosted forums when I was 11, similarly have been a 16 year old viewer of iplayer since I was about 9 and 18 years old as far as a certain film demographic hosted on the internet goes since I was around 13. How on earth you'd police any age restriction without using illegal computer hacking is beyond me.

I'm pretty sure that we've had serious discussions about that before. Also how did you post them without the filter getting you?

If I was a parent of a teenager and I searched through their browser history and saw they were looking at a website which predicts when celebrities will die my thought might be "Hooray Little Jimmy is on a text site and not looking at porn all day"

I've spent the last few minutes looking at age checks for a forum. Other than using credit cards there's no way of knowing the age of the person typing an age or day of birth. That reality makes this discussion academic. Feel free to continue it.

Hein, my original post pertained to members who have stated that they are 'of a childs age' which is more like going up to the newsagents counter with a Porn mag, being asked your age and saying 'Well, im 15 but it doesn't matter because I can see people shagging online anyway.

Yeah, I understand that we have no idea who signs up to this place, deranged, underage or otherwise but when its obvious maybe we ought to be a bit cautious.

There is so much shit flying around nowdays in Blighty about kids accessing 'innapropriate websites' it will only take one parent to start the ball rolling.

We should never feel that smug that we are immune from unwanted attention or summat.
