It was thought to be a Tory safe seat, Banff, you know, and his young Nationalist challenger wasn't expected to do too well. A young guy by the name of Alex Salmond. Helmke had an extensive political career in the state and Allen County. He was elected into office as an Indiana state senator and Allen County prosecutor from 1962 to 1972.
