However, it appears clear that was an underestimation. He flew with the airline until his retirement in 1986. According to the Arizona Tuskegee Airmen officials, Ashby is believed to be the first Black pilot for a major commercial airline to reach the mandatory retirement age of 60. 1 Share this post Link to post Share on other sites

Newman served as part of the 99th Pursuit Squadron serving during World War II in Italy and North Africa.
