Toast 16,142 Posted December 9, 2018 Inspired by Deathray's music swap thread, here's a game. Choose a favourite song, give a few clues, and people try to guess what it is. You can ask questions to narrow it down. I'll start. 1960s album track British artist A UK No 1 single hit for a different artist

Toast 16,142 Posted December 9, 2018 3 minutes ago, Paul Bearer said: That could be anything. How very defeatist. Of course it can't be "anything". It's restricted to UK No 1's for a start. I'll clarify that it was a No 1 in the 1960s as my phrasing didn't make it obvious.
charon 4,943 Posted December 9, 2018 Spirit in the Sky Album track in the 60's. British artist got it to no 1. Covered by different British artist, also got to no 1.
Toast 16,142 Posted December 9, 2018 No, it wasn't released as a single in the 60s by the original artist, and not a hit for them.
msc 18,476 Posted December 9, 2018 With a Little Help from my Friends, by Joe Cocker, covering Beatles off...Sgt Pepper iirc?

Toast 16,142 Posted December 9, 2018 2 minutes ago, charon said: Telstar then. Nope. I don't think Joe Meek was a recording artist, was he? The artist(s) in this case had many hits. And had a hand in the hit cover version.
charon 4,943 Posted December 9, 2018 Ballad of Bonnie and Clyde 100%. Bound to be more.

Toast 16,142 Posted December 9, 2018 Well, there's no such doubt about the song I'm thinking about. Written and recorded by British artist who had many hits, but not with this song. Pretty much a one-hit wonder for the cover artist, although still recording and performing.
gcreptile 10,978 Posted December 9, 2018 Ok, I think I got it. Ob-La-Di, Ob-La-Da No. 1 for Marmalade, album track by you know who.

msc 18,476 Posted December 9, 2018 So far I've learnt Ob-La-Die was a Beatles single, Eddy Grant had a 60s band and Mary Hopkins was a cover of a Russian song (!) produced by Macca, but not the answer!

Toast 16,142 Posted December 9, 2018 Cat has it! Chris Farlowe's is magnificent, but here's the Stones' unabridged original in all its five minute glory.. Over to you, Cat. I gotta go out now, but keep em coming.

Lord Fellatio Nelson 6,219 Posted December 9, 2018 I think it got lost in translation. I think 'What 60s album track on a British artist/groups album was recorded by another British artist as a single and became their only no1 hit? would have been more accurate? Maybe.
Cat O'Falk 3,290 Posted December 9, 2018 O.K. I've thought of a question that didn't take too long. It's a favourite song (remember I'm an old bona queen of fabularity), its title is rather appropriate given my atrocious mental health state and it was number one in the UK singles chart on my 21st birthday (look on these hallowed DL pages and ye shall find the relevant information). Get yer skates on good people.
