Glynis Johns, the stupendous South African-born British actress, dancer and singer who is the oldest living Academy Award-nominee in any acting category, is 99 today.

 

 

Mariano Ozores, the especially successful Spanish film director and screenwriter, a fundamental personality in Spanish cinema, who was born into a family of performers, is 96 today.

His brothers, José Luis, the most beloved comedian actor of the 1950s, and Antonio were actors.

Although critically despised, Ozores directed almost a hundred films, the most popular Spanish comical films of all time and the biggest box-office hits of the era.

The dynasty continues with the actresses Adriana and Emma Ozores, his nieces.

Lonnie Johnson is 73 today.

Born in Mobile, Al, he attended Tuskegee University before joining the Air Force, then working for NASA in the Jet Propulsion Laboratory, working on the Galileo project, amongst others. In 1991 he founded his own company Johnson Research and Development Co., Inc.

 

During his time in the Air Force, he had an idea which would generate $1billion in sales - The Super Soaker. This was produced in conjunction with toy company Larami Corp., which would later be taken over by Hasbro. Johnson would later sue Hasbro for underpayment of royalties on sales, being awarded $73million.

 

He would later tweak the design to enable the guns to fire Nerf projectiles rather than water.

English Elite artistic gymnast Courtney Tulloch,  who specialises in the gymnastics events rings and vault,  celebrates his 27th birthday today.

He won two gold medals in the rings at an individual and team level at the past two Commonwealth games. 

 

 

 

Retired Italian diver and three times Olympic gold medallist klaus Dibiasi  celebrates his 75th birthday today.  

He competed as a diver for four consecutive Olympics starting in 1964.

Mary Badham, American film, stage and television actress who made her acting debut as Jean Louise "Scout" Finch in the loved film adaptation of Harper Lee's Pulitzer Prize-winning novel "To Kill a Mockingbird", is 70 today.

Badham earned an Oscar nomination at age 10 for her work, but she lost out to Patty Duke, who played Helen Keller in "The Miracle Worker".

Her brother is John Badham, the American film director best known for directing "Saturday Night Fever" and "WarGames".

 

 

 

Thomas Keneally, Australian essayist, novelist and playwright who began his writing career in 1964 and won numerous prizes for his famous novel "Schindler's Ark", the basis of the Oscar winning film "Schindler's List", is 87 today.

Keneally has also written memoirs, non-fiction books and screenplays.

Betty Boothroyd is 93 today.

 

Once a Tiller Girl, she entered parliament as MP for West Bromwich in a 1973 by-election. She served as Deputy Speaker under Bernard Weatherall from 1987, before being elected speaker in 1992, following Weatherall's retirement. Not only was she the first female speaker, she was also the first to eschew the traditional Speaker's wig. She resigned both her psoition and her seat in August 2000 and was elevated to the House of Lords the following year as Baroness Boothroyd of Sandwell.
