"Comedy Cremations" indeed.

Yeah, I can't even chuckle at my DDP team name, given the circumstances.

As I am (very) nearly finished totting up the 2020 Jokers scores, I thought I would stop in on this pool to see where we are up to. I have noted  the following hits:

03/02/22 - Christos Sartzetakis

06/02/22 - Lata Mangeshkar

17/02/22 - Jim Hagedorn

19/02/22 - Gary Brooker

19/02/22 - Nightbirde

22/02/22 - Anna Karen

Have I missed anyone?

Before I get to totting up the scores for the 6(?) hits so far, I wanted to address the issue of the bonuses in this pool.

From what I can see from previous editions of this pool, there seems to be a major point of contention between players and the game runner regarding the hidden bonuses.

On the one hand, players (understandably) feel that the hidden bonuses should be revealed at some point, be that after the entries are submitted, as the game progresses, or at least once the game is over. It is a bit daft to have a winner, but for no-one except the host to know why they had won.

On the other hand, the hidden bonuses have been an integral part of this pool since it was first established, and I am of the opinion that they need to be retained to keep the unique character of the pool. If the bonuses are revealed, then they are no longer hidden for the following years edition of the pool, allowing players to make their picks based on the previous years bonuses.

To solve this dilemma, I have divided the bonuses into two separate groups (there are a lot of bonuses in this game!)

1. PERMANENT BONUSES

These bonuses will remain mostly constant from year to year (there will be some minor tweaks and possibly additions to make the game fairer and more interesting, but not many). They will be posted at the start of the game, and thus seen by all players before their team is selected. Most of them were already posted at the start of this years game. Others were hidden bonuses but now become part of the permanent rules. With the exception of the first three, they are bonuses which should not affect a players selection of their team.

The permanent bonuses for 2022 are as follows:

PERMANENT BONUSES

1. + 3 pts if pick is a unique pick in DDP

2. +2 pts if pick is a Drop 40 pick in DDP

3. +3 pts if pick is a solo pick in this pool

4. +5 if they die on their birthday

5. + 2 if they die on the 13th of the month

6. +5 if they die on 28th April (cannot reveal why, although others may wish to do so)

7. +5 if they die on  St Andrew's Day (30th November).

8. +3 pts for an unnatural death

9. +5 if a player gets 2 hits in one day

+10 if a player gets 3 or more hits in one day

10. +2 if they are the first hit in the game. +3 if they are the last hit in the game.

11. +1 for ending the longest gap between hits (+1 each time this happens).

12. +1 for every person they guess in order from the first until they break the combo (+1 cumulatively each time this happens)
[i.e. if #7 is their first hit they get 1 base point, if #19 is their 2nd hit they get 2 points, if #31 is their 3rd hit they get 3 points, but if #17 is their 4th hit then they're no longer eligible for this bonus]

13. -2 for the most hits in the pool.

 14. +10 if they were in last place on 31/12, this bonus possibly making someone else last, which in that case the new last place person stays last

 15. -5 if they were originally in 13th place at the end (same with last, the new 13th will stay 13th)

 16. +1  for hits at certain spots on your list. Which spots they are, however, are hidden until they are scored.

2. HIDDEN BONUSES

The remaining 18(!!) bonuses are hidden bonuses. Some may be revealed during the game, but they will all definitely be revealed after the game has ended.

They will change every year, so no-one can select picks based on the previous years hidden bonuses. Some may be retained, other may be reversed so what was a bonus becomes a penalty the following year. It will be purely at the discretion of the Rules Maker. There will most likely be 20 hidden bonuses next year, purely because I like round numbers.

In order that I can still select a team but cannot gain an advantage, I will not be devising the hidden bonuses. Previous host Clorox Bleachman has kindly agreed to create a new set of bonuses for next years game. I will have absolutely no influence on these, except to say that I would like at least some of the bonuses to reward the more left-field selections rather than the obvious ones, and I would like more of them to be negative bonuses. Lets face it - everyone gets a good laugh out of someone getting a hit and losing points because of it . The list of hidden bonuses will only be given to me after I have posted up my team.

3. BONUSES FOR CERTAIN SPOTS

Again these will be randomly selected by Clorox and given to me after I have posted up my team.

I hope that this all sounds ok. If anyone has any suggestions as to how to improve the pool further, feel free to share. Just don't suggest removing the hidden bonuses, because that is not going to happen.

3 hits to report since the last scoreboard, so rather than stick with tradition and have an update once every 2 years, let's end the quarter with a new leaderboard.

These were the hits:

RENE CLEMENCIC

+1 Base Point

+3 Unique DDP Pick

+1 Ended Longest Gap between Hits

+5 TOTAL POINTS

Hits for: Great Uncle Bulgaria (Bonus +1  Position 41 in list) (Bonus +1  Hits in order)

                GCReptile

ANNE PARSONS

+1 Base Point

+3 Unique DDP Pick

+1 Ended Longest Gap between Hits

+1 (Hidden Bonus)

+6 TOTAL POINTS

Hits for:   Book (Bonus +1  Position 3 in list) (Breaks run of hits in order)

                 GCReptile

TOM PARKER

+1 Base Point

+3 DROP 40 Pick

+4 TOTAL POINTS

Hits for:   The Old Lady (Bonus +1  Position 6 in list)

Doulton (Bonus +1  Hits in order)

The Unknown Man (Bonus +1  Position 5 in list) (Breaks run of hits in order)

Wannamaker (Bonus +1  Hits in order)

                  Perhaps

Captain Chorizo (Bonus +1  Position 46 in list) (Bonus +3  Hits in order)

                  Pedro67 (Bonus +1  Position 26 in list)

The Old Crem  (Breaks run of hits in order)

                   BuffaloPhil

                   Annami

Marinisia (Bonus +1  Hits in order)

With the two hits of Clemencic and Parsons, GCReptile ascends to the summit of the leaderboard, and can (finally) stop moaning about being hard done-by in the scoring system:D

Full leaderboard is on page 1

GCREPTILE                                       24

PERHAPS                                          23

PEDRO67                                           23

CAPTAIN CHORIZO                          23

JOEY RUSS                                        20

Right, I also picked her in this game.

Apologies- I did a cut and paste job, and forgot to edit in your name. Done now. The scores had already been correctly updated.

June Brown doubles my hit rate here.

June Brown is indeed a hit for YoungWillz, and for 12 others, meaning its an unlucky 13 for Dot, but very lucky for anyone who selected her.

She is the first big-scoring hit of the year with 11 Total points on offer plus any additional bonuses, making her a "Don't miss" selection (are you listening GcReptile?)

JUNE BROWN

+1 Base Point

+2 DROP 40 Pick

+2 DeathList Alumnus

+5 (Hidden Bonus)

+1 (Hidden Bonus)

+11 TOTAL POINTS

Hits for:   The Old Lady (Bonus +1  Hits in order)

Doulton (Breaks run of hits in order)

                 The Unknown Man

Hell (Breaks run of hits in order)

LizLemon (Bonus +2  Hits in order)

Captain Chorizo (Bonus +1  Position 19 in list) (Breaks run of hits in order)

GooseberryCrumble (Breaks run of hits in order)

GreatUncleBulgaria (Breaks run of hits in order)

Toast (Breaks run of hits in order)

                  Pedro67 (Bonus +1  Position 31 in list)

                  The Old Crem

YoungWillz (Bonus +1  Position 49 in list) (Bonus +1  Hits in order)

Bibliogryphon (Bonus +1  Position 21 in list)

The eagle-eyes among you would have noticed an error in the last update (anyone? anyone?). OK - I'll tell you.  Tom Parker was assigned +3 Bonus points for being in the Drop 40. However the correct bonus should have been +2, as June Brown received. It was +3 in previous years, but was reduced for this years game. As a result, all Tom Parker Pickers lose 1 point, and The Unknown Man loses 2 as he was one of the wildcards.

GcReptile goes from being the leader to dropping out of the Top 5, which is as follows:

CAPTAIN CHORIZO                          35

PEDRO67                                           35

GREAT UNCLE BULGARIA               26

BIBLIOGRYPHON                              25

HELL                                                   25

James Lovelock is one of my wildcards here 12th hit

Makes it a mere 5 for me.

Of course, last time I entered this pool a couple of years ago, it collapsed into failed updates and pointless posting of hits here. Looks like it's gone the same way this time.

Oi! You cheeky fucker. Read the first post in the pool.

"No-one counts the scores for ages. Everyone gets confused or annoyed or both, and at the end of the year, a seemingly random winner is announced."

This pool does exactly as it says on the tin!
