Buzzi and the Duke finished in the top 60 but started too slowly, and were both over 50 points from a qualifying spot. Faithfull finished miles off, nearly 200 points off the pace.

Mostly expected drops imo. Taylor and Faithfull's health situations turned out not be as dire as was though this time last year, Jackson was a punt pick and the Duke just barely made it on last year.

Put an end to her Suffering-gette

1/50

Glynis Johns - Britain's oldest living star of stage and screen is still shining | Celebrity News | Showbiz & TV | Express.co.uk

4th January 2024

Oscar nominated actress Glynis Johns died just under two months after turning 100. Best remembered for her role in Disney’s classic film ‘Mary Poppins’ in which she portrayed suffragette Winifred Banks, the mother of the central family, Johns’ career spanned across seven decades and earned her many awards and nominations. She won her first award in 1942 for Michael Powell’s ‘49th Parallel’, was nominated for best supporting actress at the 33rd Academy Awards for her role in The Sundowners (but lost to Shirley Jones), won a Tony Award in 1973 for Stephen Sondheim’s ‘A Little Night Music’ and in 1998 was granted Disney Legend status alongside Poppins co-star Dick van Dyke. Johns’ last appeared on stage in 1998 and onscreen in 1999, retiring from acting aged 76. In recent years most conversations about Johns haven’t revolved around her long career, rather they have focused on her longevity. She outlived all four of her husbands by 14 to 46 years and one of her children. In 2020 she became the oldest living Academy Award nominee for acting. She turned 100 in October 2023, with many calling for her to receive a damehood for her services to acting, something which alas was unable to happen.

She was making her 8th appearance on the Crowdsourced Deathlist, this year at no.3.

Dead Kaiser

2/50

Franz Beckenbauer - Player profile | Transfermarkt

7th January 2024

Franz ‘der Kaiser’ Beckenbauer, who has died aged 78, was often cited as one of the greatest footballers of all time. Aged 14 he was signed for the Bayern Munich youth team and was eventually promoted to the main team in 1964. The same year he was signed to the West German national team’s youth squad and was quickly promoted to the main team in 1965. He played as a central midfielder in the 1966 World Cup final against England, a match that England famously won. In the 1970 quarter-finals, Beckenbauer was one of three German players to score and beat the England squad, however West Germany was knocked out by Italy in the semis and placed 3rd, beating Uruguay in the play off. By 1974 he was the captain of the national team and led his country into the World Cup, where they beat the Netherlands 2-1 in the final. He hung up his boots in 1983 and began managing the national team the following year, a role he held until 1990. In the lead up to the 2006 World Cup he helped Germany’s successful bid to host, which caused him to be investigated for fraud in 2016. Throughout 2023 reports of his failing health circulated that lasted up until his death.

He was making his first appearance on the Crowdsourced Deathlist, at no.25.

Jonnie Irwin: Escape to the Country and A Place in the Sun host dies aged 50 - BBC News

2nd February 2024

Longtime TV presenter Jonnie Irwin has died aged 50 after a 4 year long battle with cancer. Irwin’s TV career started in 2004 when he landed the role of co-presenter on Channel 4’s A Place in the Sun and filmed 100s of episodes for the programme until he was fired in 2021, he claims that they had sacked him due to his illness. His other most well known presenting gig was on BBC’s Escape to the Country, which he worked on starting in 2010. In 2020 Irwin was diagnosed with lung cancer and reportedly was given 6 months to live. In 2022 he went public with this information, reiterating that he hasn’t got long left. However to every deathlisters delight he continued to confound the odds and spent every waking moment talking to the press about how he wasn’t going to see Christmas (he never said which one). At the end of January he spent a week in hospital and was sent home on the 27th, where he died the following week.

He was making his second appearance on the Crowdsourced deathlist, this year at no.10.

Toby Keith: Country music legend dies aged 62 - BBC News

5th February 2024

Country icon Toby Keith has died aged 62 from stomach cancer. Keith’s career in country music started in 1993 when he released his first, self-titled, album that reached no.17 on the US country charts, with his single ‘Should’ve been a Cowboy’ reaching no.1 on the country charts and going 3 times platinum. In 2002 his seventh studio album ‘Unleashed’ became his first no.1 album on the regular US Billboard charts, a feat he achieved a further 3 times throughout his career. On the US country charts, in total Keith achieved 20 no.1 singles and 9 no.1 albums. A multi-talented man, he sometimes ventured into acting, opened his own chain of restaurants called ‘Toby Keith's I Love This Bar & Grill’ and was a staunch supporter of the US Republican Party. In 2022 Keith announced that he had been diagnosed with stomach cancer towards the end of the previous year and was undergoing treatment. Following his passing for the disease in February, Keith has been posthumously inducted into the Country Music Hall of Fame.

He was making his first appearance on the Crowdsourced Deathlist, at no.28.

MP for Birken-Dead

5/50

Profile: Who is Frank Field? - BBC News

23rd April 2024

Veteran Labour politician, Frank Field has finally succumbed to cancer after a decade long battle. Field first entered the realm of politics in 1964 when he became a councillor on the Hounslow borough council but he lost his bid for reelection in 1968 and instead became director of The Child Poverty Action Group. His first attempt to join parliament in 1966 was unsuccessful as he failed to usurp the incumbent Conservative MP in the South Buckinghamshire constituency, however in 1979 he was elected MP for the Birkenhead constituency, where he remained until 2019. Throughout Thatcher’s government Field occasionally sat on the front benches of the opposition, holding minor roles and chairing committees. In 1997, Tony Blair appointed him Minister for Welfare Reform but didn’t last long in the role as he was constantly clashing with other ministers and he eventually resigned after only 14 months, with Blair describing his ideas as “unfathomable”. Upon returning to the backbenches, he became a vocal critic of both Blair and Brown’s governments, even at one point before the 2010 election attempting to have Brown replaced. Field was a strong supporter of Brexit and increasingly lost support from his party and constituents for his views. In 2018 he left the Labour party citing internal racism as his reason, however some commentators have suggested he only left to save the embarrassment of being sacked. In the 2019 election he stood as an independent candidate in his constituency and much to no-one’s surprise didn’t win, but was appointed to the House of Lords in 2020. In October 2021 he announced he had terminal cancer and had been in hospice care; he had initially been diagnosed with prostate cancer around 2013. He died yesterday aged 81.

He was making his third appearance on the Crowdsourced Deathlist, this year at no.9

Rob Burrow death: Inspirational rugby league star dies after battle with motor neurone disease | The Independent

2nd June 2024

Rugby legend Rob Burrow has died following an almost five year battle with motor neurone disease. Borrow joined Leeds Rhinos rugby team in 1999 and started playing for them in 2001 and very quickly became a valued and regular member of the squad. 2004 saw him joining England’s national rugby league team, playing in 13 games nationally. His career at the Rhinos saw him appearing 492 times for the team across 16 years, scoring almost 200 tries and earning over 1000 points. He retired from the sport in 2017, with his final match seeing the Rhinos beat the Castleford Tigers in the final of Super League XXII. Sadly in December 2019 Burrow revealed he had been diagnosed with MND, a horrific disease that damages motor neurons in the muscles. Since his diagnosis, with the help of former teammate Kevin Sinfield he has raised awareness of the illness and raised millions of pounds to provide care for those afflicted. In 2021 he was appointed an MBE and in 2024 a CBE. Burrow died earlier today aged just 41.

Ian Chester-Done

7/50

Doctor Who: Why Every Companion Actor Left The Show

3rd June 2024

British actor William Russell has died following a decades-long career. Russell’s long film and TV career began in 1952, when he appeared in a minor role in the film Gift Horse. His big break came in 1956 when he got the title role in ITV’s ‘The Adventures of Sir Lancelot’, being the only actor to appear in all 30 episodes. However it was in 1963 he landed the part that would go on to define his career, Ian Chesterton in Doctor Who. Ian was in all but name the hero lead of the now iconic show’s first years, due to Russell’s younger age in comparison to Doctor actor William Hartnell. Russell appeared as Ian in 77 episodes of the show starting with the first episode in 1963 and lasting until 1965’s Dalek adventure ‘The Chase’. After Doctor Who, Russell’s career continued on both film and TV, appearing in Hollywood films ‘The Great Escape’ and 1978’s ‘Superman’. On TV he made appearances in Crown Court, Blackadder, Casualty, Poirot and in 1992 appeared in Coronation Street as Ted Sullivan, second husband of Rita Littlewood. However through it all, he couldn’t escape Doctor Who, in 1999 he returned as Ian to provide narration for one of the show’s missing serials, in 2005 he began recording audio-dramas with Big Finish (although not as Ian, at first). In 2013 he had a cameo as an elderly security guard in An Adventure in Space and Time, a drama detailing the creation of Doctor Who. Finally in 2022 he appeared briefly as Ian in ‘The Power of Doctor’, breaking the Guinness World Record for the longest gap between TV appearances for a character. William Russell Enoch died yesterday aged 99.

Hard(y) luck

Françoise Hardy: 'I sing about death in a symbolic, even positive way' | Pop and rock | The Guardian

11th June 2024

French singer and part-time actress Françoise Hardy has died. Hardy’s long career performing began in 1961 when she was signed to the now defunct label ‘Disques Vogue’, with her first EP being released the following May featuring her first hit song ‘Tous les garçons et les filles’. Despite the song being relegated to the B-side of the record, it was propelled into No.1 on the French charts (for 15 non-consecutive weeks) and the UK top 40. In 1968 her album ‘Comment te dire adieu’ reached the number 2 position in the French album charts, however despite numerous top 10 albums throughout her career she never managed to claim the number one spot. Her musical career spanned decades but finally came to an end in 2021 when, due to ongoing health issues, she became unable to sing. Hardy’s acting career was small, as music was always her true passion, with a number of her credits coming as a result of musical performances and cameo appearances. In 2008 she released her autobiography which sold a quarter of a million copies and became a bestseller in France and in 2012 she wrote a romantic fiction novel as a tie-in with one of her many albums. She was one of the best selling French musical artists of all time, selling over 7.5 million records throughout her career. Hardy was first diagnosed with laryngeal cancer in the early 2000s and underwent successful chemotherapy, however the disease returned in 2015. In her past few years, as her health has worsened, she became a vocal supporter of assisted suicide. Françoise Hardy died yesterday aged 80.

She was making her 3rd appearance on the Crowdsourced Deathlist, this year at no.35.

Shannen Doherty Dead: Brenda on 'Beverly Hills 90210'

13th July 2024

American actress Shannen Doherty has died. Doherty’s performing career began when she was just 10 years old when she made a guest appearance in 2 episodes of TV western ‘Father Murphy’. The following year she got her first major role becoming a main cast member in the final season of the long running NBC series ‘Little House on the Prairie’. She continued to appear in usually smaller roles throughout her teenage years, such as being a regular in family drama ‘Our House’ and starring alongside Winona Ryder & Christian Slater in 1988 cult classic ‘Heathers’. Her big break came in 1990 when she landed the role of Brenda Walsh in teen soap Beverly Hills, 90210, she played the character for 4 years, reprising the part in the show’s 2008 reboot. However perhaps her most famous role was that of Prue Halliwell in the first 3 seasons of WB’s supernatural drama ‘Charmed’, she appeared in 66 episodes of the show from 1998-2001. In recent years she has appeared in shows like ‘Riverdale’ and HBO’s Heathers adaptation. She was diagnosed with breast cancer in 2015, but announced it was in remission by 2017. However, sadly in 2020 the disease had come back and by the end of 2023 had spread to other parts of her body. Shannen Doherty died yesterday aged 53.

She was making her 4th appearance on the Crowdsourced Deathlist, this year at no.7.

Bob Newhart says his 'Elf' role 'outranks, by far' any character he ever played | CNN

18th July 2024

American comedian and actor Bob Newhart has died. Newhart’s professional comedy career started in 1960 when he was a guest on ‘The Ed Sullivan Show’. Very seen after in 1961 NBC gave him his own variety show of his own, despite the programme only running for 27 episodes it won numerous awards and established Newart as a man who could lead. Throughout the 60s he continued to have guest stops on a number of American variety shows. In 1972 he was given his second eponymous show, which would run for 142 episodes until 1978, ‘The Bob Newhart Show’ was a family/workplace as opposed to his previous work mostly in the variety genre. His third eponymous show simply titled ‘Newhart’, another sitcom, began in 1982 and ran for 184 episodes until 1990. 2 years after that his fourth and final show named after himself began airing, another sitcom CBS’s ‘Bob’ only lasted for 33 episodes and just over a year. In 1997 he starred alongside Judd Hirsh in the short lived sitcom 'George and Leo’. Following the turn of the millennium Newhart’s career slowed down, guest starring in shows like ‘Desperate Housewives' and ‘NCIS’. In 2013 he began playing Professor Proton in ‘The Big Bang Theory’, a role he played for 9 episodes across the show and its spin-off ‘Young Sheldon’. Although mainly known for television throughout the decades Newhart made appearances in a small number of films, such as Disney’s ‘The Rescuers’ & its sequel and 2003’s Christmas classic ‘Elf’. Bob Newhart died earlier today aged 94.

He was making his second appearance on the Crowdsourced Deathlist, this year at no. 34

Interestingly enough, 'George and Leo' is also named after him because his legal first name is George.
