Kill or Save: UK No.2 Hits of the 60s

I didn't know Eloise beforehand either, but it is pretty grand. I like a good underdog hidden gem victory.

Eloise really coasted this game in a similar way to Lovefool and Dare

Has very much the feel of a compromise

I've nothing against Eloise, I just think Waterloo Sunset and God Only Knows are far better. And I much prefer The Damned's version of Eloise, too.

I would have voted up God Only Knows, but the song was driving me crazy as it kept repeating in my head while at work.

@TQR out of curiosity, what would have been the ideal top five for you?

I admit I would have preferred the final result to have gone the other way, but that's only because I prefer The Damned's cover of Eloise.

As for God Only Knows, I think I must be a strange outlier as I really don't like it.

Having been, I think, the first to champion Eloise I'm amused, bemused, and delighted at its unexpected victory

Not sure that I would have placed it first, but there were many strong contenders splitting the votes.

It is a fabulous song, as The Damned would agree (but they weren't in this round), so I'm pleased it's gained some new fans.

Well bless my blimeys…the best UK Singles No.2 of the 1960s is...*stifles laughter*...Eloise! The game said it, and we the DL music community control the game, so it must be true :o

The Kinks’ Waterloo Sunset (is fucking shit and) somehow narrowly missed out on the win, being stunned late on by a pretty blummin’ surprising run for the late Barry Ryan’s (brother Paul’s) melodramatic old prog pop banger which, mild spoiler alert, we’ll see again in the 80s No.3s game (by The Damned). Reckon it has a chance in that game? Me neither. It'll actually have some great competition.

Anyway, once you've stopped laughing, get a load of the Top-25 result:

  1. Barry Ryan — Eloise
  2. The Kinks — Waterloo Sunset
  3. The Beach Boys — God Only Knows
  4. The Kinks — All Day And All Of The Night
  5. The Spencer Davis Group — Gimme Some Lovin’
  6. The Yardbirds — Heart Full Of Soul
  7. Los Bravos — Black Is Black
  8. Petula Clark — Downtown
  9. The Rolling Stones — Nineteenth Nervous Breakdown
  10. The Animals — We Gotta Get Out Of This Place
  11. Elvis Presley — In The Ghetto
  12. The Troggs — Wild Thing
  13. Fleetwood Mac — Oh Well
  14. The Who — My Generation
  15. Chris Montez — Let’s Dance
  16. The Drifters — Save The Last Dance For Me
  17. The Small Faces — Lazy Sunday
  18. John Leyton — Wild Wind
  19. Jimmy Dean — Big Bad John
  20. Little Eva — The Loco-Motion
  21. The Crystals — Then He Kissed Me
  22. Billy J. Kramer & The Dakotas — Do You Want To Know A Secret?
  23. Bobby Darin — Lazy River
  24. Chubby Checker — Let’s Twist Again
  25. Nina Simone — Ain’t Got No / Do What You Gotta Do

Let’s face it though, to arrive at that, we had to rifle through a lot of old toot. These are the 25 tootiest of the toot:

Shirley Bassey — As Long As He Needs Me

Connie Francis — Mama / Robot Man

Cliff Richard & The Shadows — Fall In Love With You

Adam Faith — Someone Else’s Baby

Cliff Richard & The Shadows — A Voice In The Winderness

Pat Boone — Speedy Gonzales

Ned Miller — From A Jack To A King

Cliff Richard & The Shadows — I’m Looking Out The Window / Do You Want To Dance

Cliff Richard — It’s All In The Game

Cilla Black — You’ve Lost That Lovin’ Feeling

The Swinging Blue Jeans — Hippy Hippy Shake

Cliff Richard — Wind Me Up (Let Me Go)

Gene Pitney — I’m Gonna Be Strong

Brian Poole & The Tremeloes — Someone, Someone

Engelbert Humperdinck — There Goes My Everything

The Beatles — Magical Mystery Tour Double EP

Gene Pitney — Nobody Needs Your Love

Vince Hill — Edelweiss

Harry Secombe — This Is My Song

Engelbert Humperdinck — A Man Without Love

The Plastic Ono Band — Give Peace A Chance

1910 Fruitgum Co. — Simon Says

Lulu — Boom Bang-A-Bang

Bobby Goldsboro — Honey

So...that happened. All that’s left to do is say that was a fat load of bollocks, but here’s the winner to play us out:

Well, let's not dwell on the past. Onwards to the 00s we go!

I'd say, out of the finalists, it would've been:

1) Fleetwood Mac Oh Well

2) The Animals We Gotta Get Out Of This Place

3) The Rolling Stones  Nineteenth Nervous Breakdown

<vast, yawning chasm>

4) Chris Montez Let's Dance

5) The Who My Generation

They were all between 9th and 15th overall so you can imagine how hacked off I was come the end of that streak of eliminations :o

I completely lost this one, it was too hard in the early days to find time to listen to all the ones I didn't know, so gave it a miss and never came back for the later rounds. Not complaining with the winner though, Eloise is a great song, my mum loves the Barry Ryan version, I prefer the Damned's cover.
