José Mujica

Recommended Posts

Former president of Uruguay and global icon mainly due to his frugal lifestyle and critic of capitalism.

Now suffering from esophageal cancer, severe autoimmune disease and kidney failure. At almost 89, this becomes quite a deadly cocktail.

If he's still alive in 2025, which is very possible because cancers at this old age can be slow, he would be a serious good name for the official deathlist !

Interviewed by NYT.

Doctors said he is well, he seems convinced he is dying.  He is "very weak" and "does not eat much".

He won't recover, but could see 2025.

I put him on my shadow list for this year as a punt because he's fat, lives a less luxury lifestyle than most world leaders, and is quite old. The punt has well and truly paid off and I think he is must include for next years list at this point, given he makes it.

Hospitalised, discharged and hospitalised again, from what I understand he'll be discharged in a day or two.

The autoimmune disease he suffers from is vasculitis, he has suffered from it for years and they're having trouble finding his veins. He also seems to suffer from some intestinal problems and has undergone an endoscopy recently.

Edit: actually, he has suffered from a form of vasculitis since atleast 2004 when he had kidney failure for the first time. Seems it's not one of the deadliest forms of the disease.

He is clearly circling the drain.

The doctors are pitiful. Not only the man is very old and sick, but he has accepted his mortality and is quite ready to leave.

The doctors (and his wife) insist he is on the mend, as it'd be the the only possible outcome.

He has more dignity than all of them put together.

Makes public appearance, on a wheelchair.

Has been on IV fluids since last week. He is not able to eat or drink and this has led to kidney failure. His doctor insists he is cancer-free and that "he has been cured". We'll see.

I'd much rather Mujica was exaggerating his health and Fujimori was the one dying for real but yeah, this feels like a matter of months.

Underwent surgery to fit a feeding tube.

Surely insisted on being kept alive at every cost.

Thought this was significant from the article:

As for the fight against cancer, Pannone said that “there is no evidence of the tumor,” but clarified that this “does not mean a definitive cure.” Thus, the former president is in a period of remission and must wait more time and new studies for the doctors to give him the final discharge.

The cancer is not his biggest problem at this stage. He suffers from vasculitis and kidney failure.

If he has another miraculous recovery, and survives into 2025, he might achieve immortal status.

Edit: Edited ;)
