Met him at a festival 7-8 years ago. A good show, but his mind and/or his hearing clearly went long before he did.

He was only there to goon for Brett Hull.

Salome Bey, Canada's First Lady of Blues, has died. She was 86. Bey had long been struggling with Alzheimer's.

https://www.cbc.ca/news/entertainment/salome-bey-obit-1.5680432

(Trivia: Bey is the first person to have a line - shared or solo - as part of the Northern Lights song 'Tears Are Not Enough', Canada's contribution to Ethiopian relief back in 1985, who has now died. Up until now, only chorus member Oscar Peterson and John Candy had passed. The song included the likes of Gordon Lightfoot, Burton Cummings, Anne Murray, Joni Mitchell, Neil Young, Bryan Adams and many others.)

James Harman gets a Guardian obit:

Reminds me of the late, surprising Guardian obit for Henry Gray last year. Someone at the Guardian is a Blues enthusiast.

That's a bot generated site. Here's a link from AmericanBluesScene.com for confirmation.

According to FB posts, he died on the morning of the day before his birthday (12th) so must've died on 11th.

His year of birth varies online (1934 or 1937) but the birth records confirm he was born 1937, so he was 83:

Name
Roy James Gaines III
Birth
Aug 1937
Residence
1976-2020 Los Angeles, California, USA

Worth noting that his brother was blues saxophonist Grady Gaines (wiki), who died in January aged 86.

Here's a pic of Roy and Grady, with blues guitarist Clarence Holliman (1937–2000):

The other three names credited on the sleeve are all deceased: Joe Medwick (1931–1992), Teddy Reynolds (1931–1998) and Big Robert Smith (1939–2006).

HOLD ON.  So I just caught up with this -- @Phantom you were wrong, he didn't lose his battle with cancer.  His obit says he died of a heart attack and oddly never mentions cancer in it at all....made me wonder a bit if there were two blues legends from California named James Hardan LOL (seriously).

But he is the third music-related Jimmy Johnson to die in the past three years. Jimmy Johnson the top session musician and member of the Muscle Shoals Rhythm Section and Jimmy Johnson the Styx guitar tech both passed in 2019, as noted elsewhere in the Deathlist.
