Jessica Watson's mentor has been killed in a horrific yacht racing accident that is making a lot of headlines here:

Jessica is still determined to go ahead with her second attempt at her round-the-world trip, though.

Here is the latest publicity article for Jessica Watson:

As you can tell from the comments, we Aussies are still very cynical about this whole endeavour after her last mishap.

Here are some more articles alleging that Jessica Watson lacks preparation. The sea is an unforgiving place, so if any of these things are true, our cocky little friend may find herself in enormous trouble....

A lot of people have bad feelings about Jessica's trip so does anyone want to bet on how long she will last? B)

From Jessica Watson's blog (Ella Baché is her sponsor):

"I've also been kitted out with the full range of Ella Baché skin care products, and to begin with, I'll admit to being a little intimidated by all those tubes and bottles! But armed with a manual and plenty of great advice I think that keeping my skin in top condition will be good fun. "

Lots of vital equipment there. Those skin care products will really help you when you are in trouble at sea, love. Glad she has her priorities for her trip in the right order.

She's not as stupid as I first thought....no doubt the products are water-resistant. She probably thinks this will help her float - if the need arises.

Teenage sailor Jessica Watson will begin her eight-month round the world voyage on Sunday:

Jessica Watson sets sail:

Ms Watson has faced several disruptions.

Last month her yacht collided with a cargo ship off southern Queensland and last weekend one of her mentors, Andrew Short, was killed in a yacht accident.

Deputy Prime Minister Julia Gillard has told Channel Nine a lot of Australians are nervous for Jessica Watson."

:(

Geoff Holt, a bloke with the same problems and ambitions as Hilary, lasted a few miles. This sh*t is gonna end in tears for someone, the technology driving it is awesome but if our Geoff had fallen over at two in the morning somewhere off the north coast of Scotland......

Holt's trying to cross the Atlantic, but the boat's been suffering engine malfunction. He has a carer and a cameraman along for the ride, so we're less likely to lose him. However, if we do, it should be available to view.

Teen sailor was asleep when boat crashed:

http://www.abc.net.au/news/stories/2009/10/20/2719022.htm

Jessica Watson got in some choppy weather and ripped her mainsail.

The damage doesn't seem too serious, so she may well end her trip successfully and safely, but there's some poetry in the idea that she might have to abandon ship while her port of call is in sight, so to speak.

regards,

Hein

Hope she's okey, it would be really tragic if such a young girl dies at sea.

She has been found alive.

Far from a sailor or nutjob, but the fiesty Roz Savage is heading for pirate territory on her latest adventure. 'Bailing out' could hold a different meaning by the end of this voyage.

The Sydney to Hobart Yacht Race has just started so there is a chance yet that the Reaper may finally catch up with Jessica Watson as she has entered. There are likely to be heavy squalls from ex-Tropical Cyclone Fina, so Jessica may finally end up in Davey Jones' Locker.

Another one to watch out for is Syd Fischer. At 84, he is entering the race for the 42nd time in his aging yacht Ragamuffin:

His luck has to run out sooner or later and we know the Reaper has been gearing up after a slow year.

As the squalls from the ex-cyclone head south, yesterday's severe storms that struck Melbourne are moving north and bearing down on the sailing fleet as well...

"The same storm cell that hit Melbourne yesterday is expected to impact upon competitors in the 67th Sydney to Hobart yacht race this afternoon.

Crew members of many Victorian yachts who went south for Christmas were delayed by the bad weather in Melbourne, but the competitors made it just in time for the race.

Rob Webber from the weather bureau says a thunderstorm will hit racegoers in Sydney this afternoon.

"As we know from a Sydney summertime thunderstorm, you can get some very, very strong winds and hail out the bottom end of them," he said.

"It might be worth keeping an eye out for severe thunderstorm warnings during today."

Crews from Calm, Scarlett Runner, Living Doll and Chutzpah were stuck at Melbourne Airport early today, while many crews drove to Sydney or caught early morning flights to make it in time for the 1:00pm (AEDT) start.

The north-easterly winds heading out of the harbour are expected to reach 20 knots this afternoon. The winds will then swing around to the south and could reach 30 knots tonight."

The Sydney to Hobart competitors have survived their first night at sea but they are due to run into the aforementioned storm coming up from Melbourne this evening. (In case you missed it, Melbourne suffered from severe hail damage the other day so this could be interesting, especially for the more ancient competitors like the aforementioned Syd Fischer.)

If anyone actually cares, Jessica Watson survived again:

"Australian teenager Jessica Watson can add the gruelling and often dangerous Sydney to Hobart yacht race to her list of sailing accomplishments.

The 18-year-old, who last year became the youngest person to sail around the world solo, nonstop and unassisted, finished 37th of 88 starters yesterday.

Watson completed the race in four days, two hours and 12 minutes, nearly two days behind the winning yacht, Investec Loyal."

Respect to Justine Laymond - from Essex - new transatlantic sailor who had a double lung transplant in 2006. Had a team of medics on board, but still one hell of an achievement.

She mocks us, or summat!

Hilary Lister has an hour of television to herself tonight. To be fair; her sailing "career" probably deserves this. Years back she looked like a nailed-on suicide jockey, to me at least. And I still reckon the barrier-pushing in combining serious disability with epic seafaring is a rich area of possibility for dead poolers. Doubt she'll be the one to net us points, mind. Might give it a recording and fast-forward to see the bits where the safety issues are explored!
