So got some updates to process on the fly...

First the missed death of Bob Ellis. Aussie writer, died 3rd April 2016. Unique hit for Sir Creep. 50 basic points, bonus points thus 10x2 thus 70 more for him. That would have been plenty to have been 5th since then.

Next, we have Piet de Jong, ex PM of the Netherlands, who died on the 27th July. Unique hit for Not Sir Peter Maxwell Davies. 25 basic points, bonus points being 5x2. Thus 35 points on the way.

Gloria DeHaven, an old MGM movie actress died on the 30th July. Unique hit for The Unknown Man. Again 25 basis points, bonus points being 5x2. Thus 35 points on the way.

and finally, unless you know better... Bobbie Heine Miller, elderly lawn tennis player died on the 31st July. Leaving Maryport with 45 basic points, bonus points being 9x2. thus 63 more for him to change the lead.

So the Score Board should look like this...

26th Leader Board

1st - 296.5 points - Maryportfuncity
2nd - 249.1 points - Captain Chorizo.
3rd - 223 points - Death Impends
4th - 217.4 points - Not Sir Peter Maxwell Davies
5th - 207 points - The Unknown Man

6th - 200.2 points - gcreptile (also awaiting obit for Hendrijke Fitz)
7th - 186.4 points - Sir Creep

8th - 161.4points - Dead Cow
9th - 142.7 points - Shaun of the Dead
10th - 142.5 points - Hein

12th - 122.2 points - Switch

14th - 120.1 points - Morbid Kid
15th - 113 points - Toast
16th - 106.5 points - Deathray's wooden overcoat.
17th - 105 points - Time
18th - 97.4 candles LFN
19th - 80.3 points - msc

Joao (fixed it for you) Havalange departed today, right in the midst of the Olympics taking place in Brazil. Two teams advance by 35 points. Shaun of the Dead picks up a micro point too. Gcreptile moves into 3rd.

27th Leader Board

1st - 296.5 points - Maryportfuncity

2nd - 249.1 points - Captain Chorizo.

3rd - 235.2 points - gcreptile (does not yet include points, awaiting obit for Hendrijke Fitz)

4th - 223 points - Death Impends

5th - 217.4 points - Not Sir Peter Maxwell Davies (includes points for Piet de Jong but still needs obit)

6th - 207 points - The Unknown Man

7th - 186.4 points - Sir Creep

8th - 177.8 - Shaun of the Dead

9th - 161.4points - Dead Cow

10th - 142.5 points - Hein

11th - 136.8 points - Uschi

12th - 122.2 points - Switch

13th - 120.5 points - Book

14th - 120.1 points - Morbid Kid

15th - 113 points - Toast (includes points for Michel Delpech but still needs obit)

16th - 106.5 points - Deathray's wooden overcoat.

17th - 105 points - Time

18th - 97.4 candles LFN

19th - 80.3 points - msc

22nd - 15.3 points - YoungWillz

23rd - 1 point - DDT

Still dead last - Tick Tock "The Case of the Very Empty Basket"

Going to get messy some time soon about points twice handed out for deaths not yet receiving qualified obits. Go on Toast, write to the editor of the Times.

So, my continued holding onto top spot depends on either:

No more deaths (highly unlikely)

My survivors toppling (in which case we're talking deaths of perpetual death-avoiders Gabor and Graham and also Glen Campbell who seems to be physically stronger than we thought in December)

Squeaky bum time, eh?

It was the biker, on the off chance something bad happens during the Isle of Man TT. Not surprisingly, seems like he will see 2017.

I salute your honesty - surely, since the biker breathes after a TT, other less scrupilous types would have been tempted to finger one of the other two options!

A formality, like but I thought I'd add to the evidence trail

A serious question:

With Zsa Zsa, Billy Graham and Glen Campbell being the survivors on my team - d'ya reckon I'll snag one more by the close of play?

Not long to go now, MPFC - you won any of these before? I can't recall.

Glen Campbell is surely a 2016/2017 death, and the other two are very, very old. So...to misquote Kenny Dalglish: "could do, could no do..."

Aye, as I recall I've got winning form a few years back in HPDP and also the long-gone CPDP.

More luck than judgement, mind

The CPDP was before I started paying attention to the actual deadpools on here.

The bold is pretty much true of them all though - especially the Deathrace!

To be fair, judgement is the key to regular good performances - Rotten Ali being something of a past master of this with many years of creditable finishes behind him.

Aye, fair enough - I admit I was thinking of the 2015 Deathrace, when Death Impends' (?) astutely picked team was robbed at the death by some jammy sod's 107 year old joker randomly carking it! :D

Indeed, and the one time I won the Deathrace it was because I had a bunch of "had a Wiki page, didn't have a hope of a DDP obit" terminally ills who staggered on until midsummer - but this was the infamous 2014, a year where near everyone's suspected sure things were stubborn lingerers, so it was only a Deathrace by tortoise standards - meaning a June-August flood was enough to secure victory!

Aye, Deathrace was bordering on a proper dead pool that year. I had a fleeting glimpse of the graft others have to put in.

Terrifying, never again!

Maybe in future we'll award Deathrace points if the death is rumoured.

OK new rule.

If you want to win points from these sources then you have to get obits from both to count for HPDP points.

Thus you are awarded your prize.

30 basic points and 12 unique points going out to LFN for his hit on the inimitable Hilda Ogden. Aged 90 Jean Alexander was thought by many to already be dead long ago so her passing will be quite a shock for half the nation. Don't be to shocked LFN you rise to 12th on the leaderboard.

29th Leader Board

1st - 321.5 points - Maryportfuncity

2nd - 249.4 points - Sir Creep.

3rd - 249.1 points - Captain Chorizo.

5th - 232 points - The Unknown Man

I had the same Problem with Hendrikje Fitz whose death was reported in every single german newspaper, including the respected ones.

15th - 113 points - Toast (includes points for Michel Delpech but still needs obit)

Do Le Monde and Le Figaro seriously not count as "reliable, respectable sources of international news" ?

The oldest national daily in France, Le Figaro is one of the two French newspapers of record, along with Le Monde, and is one of the most widely respected newspapers in the world.

OK new rule.

If you want to win points from these sources then you have to get obits from both to count for HPDP points.

Thus you are awarded your prize.

I had the same Problem with Hendrikje Fitz whose death was reported in every single german newspaper, including the respected ones.

OK, thanks. I have the rule noted as

  Quote

2. For the purpose of the game a "celebrity" is someone well-enough known to get their death mentioned in the UK national press or on the BBC news website. Or anywhere else Notapotato's heavily-prejudiced mind considers a reliable, respectable source of international news. In the event of disagreement as to the celebrity of any individual or the validity of an obituary, Notapotato's word is final.

So we now need two acceptable foreign sources?

I don't care the readership of the sources, but if you can't get ONE goddamn obit to be printed in the English language--face it, you were a nobody. I would accept a union newsletter from Ukranian whale bone carvers published in Kyoto, so long as it's in English. That, my friend, was Fitz' undoing and no way in hell am I recognizing Francaphone newsprint beyond its bird cage lining ability. But hey, whatever rule works for y'all. Who said Le Monde was a widely respected paper, the editors at Le Monde who wrote the Wiki article?

The same people who said The New York Times, The Washington Post, The Los Angeles Times and The Wall Street Journal are widely respected newspapers.
