Been To Any Good Gigs Lately?

Recommended Posts

Worked for Rodney Crowell last week

Fantastic show. Although it went on a bit longer than anticipated. The folks certainly got their money's worth with a 2 & 1/2 hour long show

Robert Plant with Saving Grace last night in Oxford.

(50 years since I saw him on that same stage with Led Zeppelin!  God I felt old)

Superb gig, it's all about the music with Percy. He surrounds himself with excellent musicians and pulls out an eclectic mix of obscure covers and traditional songs.  Every one beautifully arranged and interpreted. Accompanied by Suzi Dian who has a lovely voice.

We got a few Zep numbers with a fresh spin too.

His voice is still powerful and he still has quite a range, although not reaching for those extremes of old, and no need to.

Brilliant evening.  Go see him if you have the chance, with whichever band he's currently assembled

Worked for Tina Schlieske (lead vocalist for Tina and The B-Sides) for her annual birthday show at The Dakota jazz room in Minneapolis.

She did two shows. Probably the highlight of the evening was when we had Elvis impersonator, Anthony Shore surprise Tina by singing Happy Birthday to her

I had the good fortune of working for Nick Lowe and Los Straitjackets this past weekend at The Turf Club in St Paul, Minnesota.

They performed two sold out gigs. Nick was in fine form.

I forgot to post this one. Earlier this month when I worked for Judy Collins at The Parkway Theater in Minneapolis. 84 years old and her voice is still as strong as ever. Earlier this year she released her 55th album although this was her first album of completely original songs,

Yves Tumor, the support act, is meant to be good, but you couldn't really see or hear them from all the smoke and distortion.

Yves Tumor was promoted to headliner at Queen Margaret Union on the campus of Glasgow Uni. And oh, I could definitely see them this time:

Bless that young security guy, he seemed genuinely in fear of the band. Yves has a weird vendetta against flash photography (when there were fucking strobe lights) but puts on a spectacular show when hacked off.

I love how easy it is to get right into the splash zone at cheap gigs in small venues.

Comedy night at the London Palladium. Frank Skinner was compère, others were Pierre Novellie, Maisie Adam, Rob Beckett, Babatunde Aléshé, Sophie Duker and Jon Richardson. All were brilliant, particularly the three in the second half.

Had the honour of working for Crash Test Dummies tonight. I was kept busy but managed to sneak just one photo. They're still going strong after 35 years.

I got a late notification that Pink has a stadium tour in the summer. Thankfully managed to get tickets to see her in June at Tottenham Hotspur Stadium. Another artist will get ticked off my bucket list. Anytime she performs live it is amazing due to arial acrobatics.

I was there too. Agree was a great Gig. First time I'd seen him live, and the power might not be there in his voice now, but the craft and delivery was superb and Suzi wow what a voice. Saw Robert Cray at the New theatre last year as well, so the venue only throws up good give for me..

Worked for Henry Cluney of Stiff Little Fingers last night.

Henry was in fine form. It was difficult to get a photo.

This was the best I could manage

Not a gig, but last night I took part in the video shoot for the music video for the new single "Speedway" by The Scarlet Goodbye.

Here's a quick photo I took of Jeff Arundel (left) and Dan Murphy (right).

Dan Murphy was the original lead guitarist for Soul Asylum.

Well, Sky Ferreira made it to SWG3:

My expectations were on the floor. When she rocked up at 21:40, I was thrilled she'd shown up at all, to be honest. She hid from the spotlight and said about 7 words in the hour-long set. One of them was "hot :P" yet she kept her coat on for another 20 minutes. She's a perplexing one. I secured a great spot at the front and she was SINGING her heart out, so I left happy.

Worked for Paula Cole tonight

She's probably best known for her song "Where Have All The Cowboys Gone?"

I was working for The Weight Band feature members that played in The Band and The Levon Helm Band.

Sadly, Jim Weider who replaced Robbie Robertson in The Band had to rush home mid tour as his wife was taken ill. They still managed to put on a really good show.
It was an older audience, so the show was over by about 9:45. They opened with "Don't Do It" and then closed with "The Weight"

It just occurred to me that today marks 12 years since Levon Helm passed away.

I worked for Madeleine Peyroux and Jill Sobule last night.

Show was sold out. The venue only holds about 360.

Personally, I had never heard of Madeleine Peyroux but had heard of Jill.

I was surprised that she was the support act.

I don't know if it's because Madeleine's new album was only available on a USB card, and she didn't have much else in the way of merchandise. But, Jill sold 3 times more. That's probably the first time I've had the support act sell more than the headliner.

Both sounded great. I have to admit, I enjoyed Jill's set more

Been at the Cliffs Pavilion in Sarfend for Romesh Ranganathan. Loads of hip hop bangers from Martin2Smoove in the build up and during the interval were a really nice touch. As for the comedy, I’m privileged to have been to more stand up gigs than I can count; highlights include Bill, Jo, Dara, the late Sean Lock…I can honestly say I’ve never laughed harder and more frequently at any other show than I did at this one. Absolutely incredible.

I've worked for Los Straitjackets a few dozen times over the past 15 years. This was the 2nd show in their 30th anniversary tour. Senor Gregorio (Greg Townson) was unable, so Eddie Angel's son, Simon aka Senor Taco stood in. Simon is the one on the far right. Joining them for the first 4 shows, was Daddy O-Grande (Danny Amis) who is 2nd from the right. Approximately 14 years ago, Danny was diagnosed with stage 4 multiple myeloma. By some miracle, he's still with us. He's been through a lot health wise having suffered a stroke, couple of heart attacks and at one point was in a coma for a month.  Danny had been mostly doing studio recordings and was included on the album "What's So Funny About Peace, Love and Los Straitjackets" which is an album comprising of instrumental covers of Nick Lowe compositions.

Yesterday I was invited to help out and attend the Kay Bank Studios Rocking Reunion show in Minneapolis. We had members of the Underbeats, the Castaways, Gregory Dee and the Avanties, the Gestures, Jesse J. and the Bandits, Dudley and the Doo-rights share their stories about recording at the studios back in the 60s.

After the event, there was another show across the street at The Icehouse MPLS where Tony Andreason of The Trashmen and Deke Dickerson were joined by some special guests such Robby Vee (youngest son of Bobby Vee)

In the photo below Bernie Bomberg (The Accents), Deke Dickerson, Tony Andreason (The Trashmen), Robby Vee, Sally West (The Fendermen) and Dave Maetzold (The Castaways, Gregory Dee & The Avanties),

Not the clearest of photos. But, straight after the Kay Bank Studios Reunion and the show on the patio at the Icehouse MPLS, I drive over to the Turf Club to catch the last hour of Stiff Little Fingers' gig.
