Thailand declares state of emergency

It looks like we could see a few top politicians in Thailand being killed as part of the coup that appears to be happening, luckily the PM is in New York at the moment.

Even if they are, we wouldn't have heard of any of them, and they'll snuff it before 1 Jan, so all I can say is execute away!

What a load of wusses. Sounds like they've been overthrown without fighting back.

In what ABC news stated as being a "bloodless coup"

Damn! coups are like they use to be when I were a lad... :banghead:

I don't think that this is your normal, 'out with democracy and in with the army' coup.

It's likely that the army, like most Thai people, want rid of the current PM and will have a democratically elected PM soon after this carry on is over.

The King has been known to stand up for the people before, so perhaps he has decided to call this coup so a new PM can be elected (even though he can probably dissolve Parliament anyway). I doubt the King will allow his country to plunge into an army led dictatorship.

Then again, what do I know. I said that Charles Kennedy would still be Lib Dem leader...

Interesting question is could it happen here?

In the 80s TV series 'A Very British Coup', a democratically elected

socialist PM is overthrown by a military coup sanctioned by the monarch.

If a situation happened like that in this country, there would probably be

the sort of 'bloodless coup' that has just happened in Thailand.

Maybe if Blair hangs on to office too long.... :banghead:

In keeping with the reputation of the Thais being a polite people, the leaders of the coup have apologised

After tanks rolled into Bangkok and martial law was declared, the army announced: "We have taken over to maintain peace and order. We ask your pardon for the inconvenience."

How nice.

Does that mean our Queen is now the longest serving head of state since the King of Thailand is now gone?

The head of state is not necessarily the government.

It's days like this I wish I was still in school so I could annoy my history teacher by asking "What's a cowp?/What's a co-up?/What's a coop?"

Cowp = fall/tilt over .

Coop = pigeon hoose...
