Hunger Strikers

Recommended Posts

Sorry to start a new thread, I don't do it very often.

Apart from Bobby Sands and his IRA buddies, has anyone actually successfully starved themselves to death in recent times?

There seem to be an awful lot of attention seekers like Saddam Hussain, Ian Brady and that jailed Serbian Nationalist Leader (whose name temporarily escapes me) who do not finish what they started. I'm sure they'd get quicker results if they went on a breathing strike.

And is force feeding still allowed in the UK?

Tricky one this, the likes of fathers' rights campaigner John Mutari seem determined enough but those looking after them do have a habit of sticking in a tube and forcing them nutrients down. Re Mutari and fathers' rights, it'd be interesting to see him trying to encourage his son to eat his greens after his own performance!

This helpful write-up considers the long term survival chances of those electing to starve to death. 60 days, give or take, but most of them are forced on longer. Yer right, in the circumstances, death is relatively rare.

According to an episode of Rab C Nesbitt, one unexpected bonus of hunger striking is rapturous food-related halluncinations in the final stages of the condition.

A couple of previously reported (and previously failed) hunger-strikers were Carlos the Jackal and Peter Sutcliffe.

DWB

When you look at the determined, demented nutters who've killed in cold blood and bottled out on hunger strike, it kinda casts them IRA lads - 1920s and 1980s - in a different light. I know their jailers were - ahem - a little less committed to keeping them alive but still.....

I always thought it was cruel that thier meals were left with them in the cell during meal times. Just think you're starving and a plate of fish and chips is set down beside you, pure torture!

[...] that jailed Serbian Nationalist Leader (whose name temporarily escapes) me who do not finish what they started.

According to nu.nl Vojislav Seselj could die in two weeks.

Four weeks would be much nicer, but we'll see.

Hein

I don't really get force feeding. What is to stop Seselj sticking his fingers down his throat and vomiting up what has just been forced in to his gullet?

It is not that easy to do. They usually strap the person down completely, force the drip through the person's nose and keep him/her strapped for a pre-determined time to allow their body to absorb it.

A bunch of London cleaners are planning to start a hunger strike from Monday.

The below from the Morning Star earlier this week, pasted because its website is subscription-based.

Does it occur to anybody else, though, that if you're not going to be spending any money on food then, if anything, you should have your pay *cut*?

A GROUP of cleaners campaigning for a living wage warned on Thursday that they are set to start a hunger strike in a bid to draw attention to their protest.

Five cleaners based in the City of London said that they will refuse food from Monday to highlight their plight.

The cleaners are members of general union T&G, which has been campaigning for over a year for a pay rise for workers employed by firms which have contracts with banks and other institutions.

Cleaners in the City of London receive no sick pay, no pension, the legal minimum holiday allowance of 12 days a year plus bank holidays and often earn as little as £5.35 per hour.

A T&G spokesman said: "The cleaners have said they're willing to take this step as a way of contrasting the massive profits made by City firms like the Royal Bank of Scotland with the poor pay and conditions of the City's cleaners."

Read about this fellow and immediately thought of this thread. Refusing insulin as a diabetic as well as food adds an additional complication to the whole game...

I never heard of the man, but Italian MEP Marco Pannella is in hospital while on hunger strike against Iraqi executions.

Did anyone pick him for a deathpool?

Here's a man who looks like he might go the distance - Inaki de Juana Chaos, an Eta terrorist implicated in the deaths of 25 people, has removed the nasal tube through which he was forcibly fed, and is now “taking no nutrients whatever”, Spain’s prison service said.

He already looked very ill in a Times article on Feb 5th, Spanish authorities now have the dilemma of binding him 24 hours a day so he doesn't rip his tube out again, or letting him starve himself to death. Interesting times. :banghead:

Bugger, he's getting fed again:

"A new tube was introduced which necessitates the complete immobility of the prisoner, who is now strapped down to the bed."
