Octopus of Odstock 2,216 Posted July 26, 2006 former NASCAR driver Benny Parsons to be treated for lung cancer http://sportsillustrated.cnn.com/2006/raci...s.ap/index.html would very likely pass the fame test in the US, not so sure he would in the UK. Anyone on this side of the ocean heard of him? Yes, but only because I'm into motor racing. I don't think he will get an obit for two reasons:- 1) motor racing drivers, unless British, tend not to. Johnny Servoz-Gavin & Doug Serrurier (who died this year) were both accomplished drivers, who raced in F1 & were well-known in their country. UK general news coverage - diddly squat. 2) Buck Baker, the NASCAR legend, died recently (last two yrs or so) and got almost zero UK coverage, bar Autosport, the motor racing magazine. But you never know, and I will add him to I & P's fortwith.

football_fan 42 Posted October 14, 2006 Benny says he's better now. I would not take his word for it. About this time last year, Dana Reeve, who was also suffering from lung cancer said exactly the same thing, causing me to drop her name from my 2006 list. But sure enough, she was dead within a couple of months.
Octopus of Odstock 2,216 Posted January 8, 2007 You could be right ff, Benny is now in intensive care with complications from his lung cancer. Regretfully, it sounds like Parsons is doomed. The latest from the hospital & friends: Was updated a bit from my family in Detroit that the doctors have advised the family stay at the hospital with BP. Not sure what this means but I have a bad feeling. Keep your fingers crossed guys.
Octopus of Odstock 2,216 Posted January 10, 2007 Latest update: He's still in a critical condition in intensive care but his condition overall is stable. However, only his family are able to be near him now apart from the doctors.
Octopus of Odstock 2,216 Posted January 12, 2007 Latest from Benny's family & the hospital: Parsons was having breathing difficulties. His doctors performed a scan and found no cancer. However, the original tumor in his left lung was large and the radiation used to treat it was so extensive that the lung is now damaged. Parsons' right lung is healthy and strong, and doctors believe Parsons' body will eventually adjust to having just one healthy lung. But until then, the former Winston Cup Series champion driver will need to use oxygen to assist his breathing. The lung specialist put Benny in Charlotte MC the day after Christmas with blood clots in the right lung and behind his right knee and on blood thinners to dissolve the clots, caused from the aggressive radiation treatment. They have Parsons on complete bed rest and Parsons will be at CMC from 5 to 7 days. (as from yesterday 12-01-07) So looks like he'll pull through after all. I don't know if this is also being reported in the news, but this is direct from one of his oldest friends and is also one of my US motorsport contacts. Octopus of Odstock 2,216 Posted January 16, 2007 Oh dear. What a terrible shame, he was such a nice man & a fine driver. I actually wonder, taking what the doctors said, if the blood clots were not more of a problem than thought & possibly led to his death? Now I picked neither Bobby Hamilton or Benny Parsons, even though they were motor racing fellows as I thought UK obits would be a major problem, as I listed above in an earlier post. I will have to see if I've made a mistake in that. Also, and it's worth pointing out - Parson's death may well bring an obit for Bobby Hamilton as an article may mention the death of both over a short space of time. We shall see..... I forgot to enter the DDP, but had Parsons on my draft pool. I was kicking myself when Hamilton and Shaver died thinking I'd messed up with my picks. Although I could have had 3 hits by now if I had put all of them down
Octopus of Odstock 2,216 Posted January 16, 2007 Watch out boys and girls, Meet Your Maker's on the trail..... Well, he will if there's a UK obit on its way. Just found out another driver's died recently. Hmmm. He was on my shortlist too...

Octopus of Odstock 2,216 Posted January 17, 2007 Finally there is a UK obit for Benny Parsons. I knew that I could count on the Guardian. Benny Parsons obit How come Parsons gets one and Hamilton doesn't? Parsons was a champion (1972 NASCAR champion) & commentator, who had a much higher profile amongst the TV world & the US as a whole. Hamilton was just a normal driver, with a few big wins, but a much lower profile generally. It's why, say Juan Manuel Fangio's death gets load of coverage and Jack Fairman's none, or precious little, to use recent examples. I think that's a breaking news feed, FF, so that may not count just yet, but ultimately he should get a mention soon elsewhere anyway. To be honest, even I'm gettingrather confused what is and what isn't a UK obit from the Guardian any more.
